One reacurring point of Capcom discourse that I never understand is the idea that Exoprimal and Kunitsu-gami should've just been Dino Crisis and Onimusha. Like, notwhistanding that it's really neat that Capcom is trying to launch new IPs in this current gen, if those games were exactly the same, but were called differently, do you feel like fans of those franchises would be happy? Besides some similarities in aesthetics and setting, they ain't exactly that similar.

Onimusha 1 got that remaster and fuck all people cared about it.
People are upset that those games started development as those games (as revealed through leaks) and then became new mutant new IP's instead of them getting an actual entry in the franchise they wanted. They got 'weird mp game sort of in the same vein as the game they wanted' instead of 'game they wanted'. Really not complicated.

I gotta be honest, I don’t think it’s worth being mad at the dead rising thing. Judging by what we’ve seen, it doesn’t seem like it’s super high budget and I doubt it’s taking too many team members away from other projects.
2:45:19 It's a big money maker in Japan, yes; but its still getting regularly beaten by Monster Strike, Puzzle and Dragons, Dokkan Battle, the latest Im@s game (which is Uma but with QoL), and even FGO. Outside of that there's the fact that the Korean version was class action lawsuit-ed to the point that the management there had to be purged. The CN version was taken down on the app store there due to content regulation (horse racing) so it's playable if you already downloaded it but they can't update the client. This results in that region rerunning the same content to this day.

Since known terrible person Ben Judd gets brought up alongside Ace Attorney, wanted to note that he was only one of three people credited for "localization" in the original game, with a whole different set of people responsible for translation (including Alexander O. Smith, on break during a lull in the translation of Final Fantasy XII). There's nothing really to suggest that he was the person specifically responsible for making the particular localization choices in AA.
It also is strange to me that even today people approach Ace Attorney's localization with contempt/ridicule. They chose what was clearly the best option they had in bringing the game to the West in a way that's legible. Would you rather they keep the character names and setting intact, thus completely losing the intent behind the punny names? Or would you rather them change the names to preserve intent but keep the setting, thus creating a Japan that's occupied entirely by people named Frank and Larry?
Yeah, there's a reason nobody who speaks English calls Squirtle "Zenigame," better to convey meaning than adhere to strict copying.
Though if memory serves most of the Japanafornia stuff is basically a butterfly effect from that bit in 1-1 where a time zone difference was the basis of a contradiction: They moved the setting to the more familiar LA so Americans wouldn't have to come up with the time shift from Framce to Japan off the cuff. But while the first three games could pass for the US well enough, it started getting much less plausible as the series continued.
@@ToastyMozart There were always incongruous elements since the first game (look no further than a clan of spirit channellers wearing kimonos, geta, and a magatama). Which is why ever since the first game came out they talked about the English games taking place in an alternate reality California where East Asian immigration was allowed to prosper and the cultures became much more intermingled. Nothing about later games really stretches that initial conceit (and in fact it gets referenced in the 2nd case of DD).

Definitely agree with your take. It made sense in the context of the time and the series' type of humor. Would the Ace Attorney approach work for every other game? Absolutely not, however, it definitely helped Ace Attorney get the popularity it has in the Western public consciousness. It's why localization is such a nuanced topic. There is no perfect approach that works for everything. It's all a matter of context. Judd's own takes on localization may be rancid, but that does not discredit the work he and everyone else working on AA1 had done.

also while Exoprimal is absolutely cribbing Dino Crisis' shit (there's even a red-haired woman who's an obvious ref) I think Kunitsu-gami is catching too many strays. The only tie to Onimusha it has is that you fight Japanese demons and mythical monsters, it doesn't line up at all beyond that, it seems to me.

I know that it's with good reason and all of their feelings and complaints are absolutely justified, especially with how promising the gen started as, but still it wasn't fun at all to go through (even if its good to finally have someone say out loud these things)

If you guys didn’t like Stellar Blade, Black Myth and Phantom Blade probably aren’t going to do much better for you. Action games that take cues from Soulslikes seem to just be anathema to you, so I don’t know what you’re expecting.
Bob's a Sekiro fan and Kris is more into FromSoftware's games than Dan and Bob are. Kris also seemed into Lies of P, but I think other games interrupted his playthrough early.
Basically: "Please take cues from games other than FromSoft, please."
From Soft's good, but it's dealing with Devs who have the same mono-focus as people who will only read Harry Potter. Basically, they're annoyed at second rate imitators and everyone copying From Soft's shtick, often to worse implementation.
Basically they want to expect the entire action genre to not be snow clones of one studio's cliches.

do not understand the comparisons between kunitsu gami and onimusha beyond them both being set in Japan and you fighting demons or something. kunitsu gami seems to play completely differently and is being handled by capcom's experimental team (they made shinsekai into the depths) so i dont think they were making this instead of an onimusha

As a broke guy who only really went current gen starting with the Switch it bewilders me that we got in the PS5 the solution to the pressing issues of performance, loading, and still looking good. Good enough that I didn’t hesitate to try getting one but were still in the weeds cuz people at the top level want to engineer new problems to convince you they’ve solved.
I'm not the biggest souls person and haven't played sekiro but I can kinda see what it's about gameplay wise through stellar blade and another cramps treasure and it's crazy how even I can see the game with the crab gets it so much more
Also I feel the want to point that with Wuk Lamat it's not just a new ffxiv cat character that is voiced by a trans woman, that character is the MAIN character of the expasion and I feel like is the first big AAA game to have a lead transwoman VA at least that I can think of which rules so hard

I think y’all really touched on something with needing to put any press on newly released ports and remasters. Cuz while Nintendo’s switch Online isn’t nearly good enough as a preservation thing or even emulation wise, they do good in throwing old games into people’s view.
Fire Emblem got me to bite the bullet on their expansion pak. And even seeing little clips and impressions from folks on Twitter does a lot more good than my only knowing Sly Cooper (the PS2 franchise that slipped by my childhood but always wanted to play) released on modern consoles solely through this podcast (thanks btw).
I feel like there's a clear disconnect between the people deciding what console games should be ported to mobile games. Good mobile games largely fall into three categories, pvp games like yugioh duel links, shadowverse, or teamfight tactics, mission based games with good stories like honkai impact 3rd or arknights, and finally turn based jrps like honkai star rail. I'm confident if they ported games like the trails of series or the smt games to mobile they would sell well.
There have been a lot of RPGs released on mobile phones and they never sell well

Dead Rising 2 is my favorite
My opinion on remakes is that studios should not be remaking games that can played on the current gen of consoles. At the very least the Dead Space remake let me play through DS1 without needing to drag out my PS3, but I would still have infinitely preferred just a port of the original trilogy.
If these studios are obsessed with remakes why not at least remake PS1/PS2/GCN stuff, as most of that is completely unplayable on modern hardware? Hey Sony, turn based RPGs are real hot right now. Sega are releasing FOUR turn based RPGs in one year. Give some team a "Trials of Mana" sized budget and give us a remake Legend of Dragoon! There were reports that LoD was the most popular PS+ Premium title (until Sly just released and beat it), there is an audience for it.
Severed Chains should be enough proof that fans want Legend of Dragoon, given that they got tired of waiting for Sony to do anything with it.

Question, why does dan refuse to play sekiro or any other soulsborne games? Is it because he sucks at those types of games. That is the only right answer, definitely not he doesn't vibe with that game.
He's played a couple, and doesn't like how pressing buttons feels. He also has a deficit of interest in most non-Dynasty Warriors and Devil May Cry 3D melee-action games.
