Nice job on the pins. I didn't think that bends like those were possible in the home shop. Impressive.

Same here, but another youtuber had done it and shared how they did it with me. That is an amazingly tight bend.

Looks like your bender is coming together very well

Thank you. These pins and the feet took a bit of time to make so I could not add other parts into this video as it was getting quite long. I now need to make a vise as that little one is just not good enough. That will probably be the next video.

Good work, very informative. Looking forward to seeing it in operation.
On turning, the rule is if something is out of the chuck 2 times it's diameter it needs support with with a centre or a rest. Otherwise the best you can hope for is chatter and a very bad finish or the work being levered out of the chuck and things breaking.

Thanks for the info Ben. That stick out was well over 2 x the diameter so I was just asking for trouble there.

@@thehobbymachinistnz Yes, but but doing things is the only way to learn so well done. You ended up with a centre anyway.

You did a great job! Those pins looked a little to daunting at the start. That jig was a nice simple solution. Keep them coming and don't leave out any details.

Thank you. When I'm recording I often wonder if I'm blabbering on too much. But, I do try to cover the important points that can help someone else if they are doing similar work.

Good work on this bender; I'm glad I found your channel. We shared this video on our homemade tools forum this week 😎

Great work. Fantastic series where, in all honesty, you needed a bender to make the bender! Well done with your workarounds.

Like part 1: thank you and very well done. Oh, the U pin w the nubbin/reduced diameter, all the videos/pics I've seen so far show that nubbin to be off-center just as you made yours. FWIW.

Thank you. Yes, the off center turning for the nubbin is probably the easiest way to do it.

I’ve been collecting pieces for my Hossfeld, I appreciate the info here. Bending those pins might be a bit above my abilities, but seeing the results does have me thinking. Those pins are mighty expensive, but at least I appreciate what goes into them.

Thanks for watching. When I was looking into this I saw that some people (on youtube) made the pins out of 3 parts welded together. A long part that goes through the top and bottom holes. A short part that goes through the top hole. And, a flat piece that bridges these together. That may be an option if you don't have the gear to bend the pins.

Nice video, appreciated your careful, thoughtful approach to figuring out how to achieve the bends you needed, Regarding the bending of the 3mm shim in forming your U pins, is there any reason you couldn't weld the block at the end of the jig so it would support that shim piece?

    • @thehobbymachinistnz

The anchor block was actually welded to the 3mm bar, but it was not wide enough to come all the way to the end where the pin is bent. That is why only the end of the 3mm bar got bent (where it is unsupported). Yes, if the block was wider then it would support that 3mm bar a lot better.

There are attachment for the bender that require a flush pin when using it in the press forming setup so I’d say that pin is still a little bit long yet lol

Seems like you need a bender to make a bender

Yes, I have made a lot of tools to make other tools. Thanks for watching.
