  • Hello and welcome to the second episode of evolution of MS-DOS gaming.
We continue our journey in 1983.
Games were still pretty simple and most of them were still either text based, monochrome or used (in best case) 4 color in CGA mode.
But it was still obvious that the quality of the games reached another level (compared to games from 1982) - with games like Digger, Battlezone, Ultima II, Frogger and Donkey Kong.
Games are, as always, presented in no particular order.
Have fun and let us know in the comments if you think of any games we might have missed.

You can definitely see the evolution of the PC and becoming a true gamimg platform.
Centipede is definitely my pick of all the games here.

Agreed. The difference in quality, when compared to 1982, is quite evident.

I owned Donkey Kong for the TI-99/4A and I thought that version was sluggish (given the TI-99/4A was sluggish to begin with given it was a 16 bit machine designed for an 8-bit processor). I had Galaxian for the Atari 800XL which displayed way more colors and had arcade-like action. Of course Atari meant their line of home computers for games since they specialized video games right from the beginning. I realize the PC was a business machine and CGA is basically all you got for any color on the PC. It's hard to believe that before the 1980s ended games started to appear using 256 color VGA and AdLib sound cards.

I'll cover all 1980s and quite a bit of 1990s and I think it will be interesting to see the quality of games spiking on PC once the VGA and Soundblaster became available.

It's hard to get on with sound back then. PC Speaker sounds terrible today...That was a strong point of Commodore, Atari or Amstrad microcomputers and better graphics. At least before EGA and AdLib arrived...

This shows how games have come on. I liked games then, as they were 2D. I can't play 3D; poor hand eye coordination.

    Yeah, really basic now.
Although back then it was magic.

True, but still, the progress from 1982 is quite evident.
      Thanks for watching!

@@retrononame Gee, I just watched 1982. 1983 was really NextGen compared to that.

At the start PC was terrible as game platform.

you can see it wasn't designed for games lots of flickering so no double buffering perhaps and sluggish, some programmers seemed to have got around the limitations better than others Centipede and Frogger run at least as good as other platforms

    • @retrononame

Yep, the tide turned towards the PC (as a gaming platform) with introduction of VGA and Soundblaster/Adlib sound boards. At least in my opinion...

  • @CaptainRufus

And this doofy overpriced platform would continue on to become THE computer platform of most of the world. Somehow. (Clones probably. )

    • @retrononame
      @retrononame  Рік тому

My guess would be that all the possible modifications and upgrades were the reason for it. When VGA came about and Soundblaster for music/sfx, the writing was on the wall for other systems I reckon.
Shame that Commodore did such a bad job with Amiga. If managed properly, I'm still sure the Amiga could be the 3rd big player today (with Windows PC and the Mac).

@@retrononame honestly at least in North America the Amiga was effectively DOA. It might have been the most successful non DOS/Mac 16 bit micro but it was so far out of most peoples notice even the C64 is more culturally relevant to people that aren't geeks like us. (Honestly even the C64 is barely there. It functionally died by Xmas 88 when Nintendo basically owned American gaming. Top selling micro still has like nothing on what the NES/Famicom was. Sadly.) The Amiga absolutely deserved better than it got. Sadly we can't go back and kick Irving Gould in his corrupt little nuts nor can we also send back A500 Plus add on boards with CF cards...

Nimam neke izrazite preference.
