“One thing lead to another, and”. This is the joy of model railroading. You head down to the layout with a goal in mind and the layout takes you in a completely different direction for that day. A very enjoyable video
Fun video. Don't worry about getting sidetracked, we're men, we all do it. Really enjoying your progress. Makes me wish I could still make models. Lovely work.
Jason, I love how you start a project to cover the closet opening with styrofoam, but along the way you end up finishing the retaining walls along the harbor. I thought I was the only one who got so distracted in the middle of a project! Great work, as always.
Lol, Thank you so much!!! It’s so hard for me to stay focused because there is so much I want to do and I can see it in my mind. Thanks for watching!!! 👍
What the heck Jason....LOL. I have a couple ideas for you, #1 - add a safety railing to the low sidewalk, preferably a steel pipe railing to add a different material, #2 - Between that wall and the buildings, pave the whole thing and have the track do a bit of street running, #3 - if you have clearance issues with the road at the bridge, dip the road down at that point like you often seen done, that would add some visual interest. Looking forward to the next one.
And if you do dip the road down, remember the grates at the bottom of the dip for stormwater to drain out -- and the pipe coming out of the retaining wall to be the other end of those drains.
Dear Jason, you really don’t have to apologize ! As usual, your work is awesome. It’s really interesting to see how you progress. It helps me a lot with my own layout.
Hi ya Jason. There certainly is no reason to apologize. You got so much done in this episode. In regards not being able to communicate with us…..because you are so affable and always include us in your great communication, I find myself agreeing with you, out loud, all the time. Don’t tell anybody. Great episode. Thanks. As always, I look forward to your next update. Take care. See ya.
More quality work, Jason! =D And at the end, where you talk about the bridge and wall, I can easily imagine someone being enchanted by the sight! Heck, the whole scene makes me imagine a town I'd love to live in. ♥ Now, I'm debating if I want to go to the root beer stand, or the pizza parlour!
Fantastic job on getting a lot of the foam landscape done. I love useing the foam board now days to build up the landscape. When I first started in the hobby in the early 70's, we used news paper, cardboard strips, and paper towels strips soaked in plaster Paris. The foam makes it alot easier and alot less weight. It is always good to see your work on the layout. You do an amazing job on all your structures making them look so realistic which I love watching your process on how anyone can achieve these results but they also need a place on the layout. You take the time to show us and you thought process to bring landscape detail to the same detail that you put in to your structures. Your layout looks so amazing and it is always good to see your progress on it. Keep shareing with use how you build your layout. It is always good to go back and forth from building structures to landscaping to help break it up so you don't get burned out doing one thing. Thanks for shareing and look forward to your next video. Be safe.👍🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂
That was just a great video of the layout and build of the foundation structures for all the buildings! The background looks great with the blue sky. Just incredible all the details you added to the cement and side walls! You would just get lost looking at the whole build detail of the town.
This was fun to watch Jason. Anyone who calls themselves a model railroader knows that when you start working you always run into projects before the main project. Your energy really pulled me in around 21:06. It looked like you were in a zone and really having some fun. Great work!
As I said, during the video, "Oh no! He's almost done!" Great video, as usual! ( FYI... I wouldn't change those bridges. Maybe put a "mock" pier hanging between them. That would be the normal thing. A span that long wouldn't be built from wood.)
This layout is going to be so awesome when it's finished... you know where you're adding the sidewalk instead of having it go back up ground level it would be cool to make it a little fishing pier or an area for people to fish Off the Wall with a little makeshift bait shop!
Once again I am inspired by your tenacity and creativity. You keep going and going! I love following your TRAIN of thought 💭 as you figure out what to do next. Your artwork gives me a level of quality to strive for. Your clouds are amazing. Thanks for another superior video.
Incredible. There are a few outstanding model railroaders who I watch frequently (there are many more of course !), a Brit, a Scotsman and four Germans. Jason, yet another awesome video. You are so creative, and achieve such great details. Thank you for inspiring us to do better. Cheers, and stay safe, Michael
I don't know what the bridge for the cars looks like but on that little road that comes out to the pier you could use those two archways that you were talking about using for to drain pipes and make it like a tunnel under the bridge just to give some visual interest of course you would have to cut out the archway to make it pass through..... sorry your video is just get the creativity and Imagination going !
Great job on the concrete retaining walls. Going to try your techniques in the future. I should also note that, where railroad bridges are concerned, you have plenty of clearance. There is one not too far from us that has a whopping seven feet to the road surface.
WowJason! Awesome. I loved it. Personally, I enjoy this type of video a bit more than the structures, but that's just me. You've motivated me to keep working on my layout!
I don't know how you do it but I am pretty sure you are really enjoying your self. Where do you get that enthusiasm? most of us could use a little of that ourselves. I have commented on you site before my name is Robby and I painted movie and TV sets for many years. we used to get really motivated when we would get our gigantic budgets, we had the advantage of almost unlimited funds and the help of the worlds best art directors and production managers and they were hired for their ability to envision realistic atmospheres. I saw you video the other day and you said you were an artist. Duh! no wonder your work is so good. I have not found anyone else on UA-cam that even comes near your quality environments. I thought I would mention when you are doing something like those runs on your wall, if you put a little drop of dish soap in that paint it will stay together better it's best to avoid big runs and I was glad to see you soften them by brushing up. Good move. You might find it interesting that we used to criticize each others work a lot because we knew it would be criticized by others including the actors who had to use it to feel in the moment. We put fake toilets in a set in Spokane Washington once and while no one was watching someone used it. Yep, number 2. Glamorous Hollywood.
It never fails, you start out with a plan on how you want to get done with your hobby time and things do not got as planed. Been there ,done that, and bought the tee shirt. I do believe modelers need to buy a foam table cutter. Love mine! love the corner with the broken corner @ 36:43 very cool detail gives me food for thought on mine. I wonder how you will fill the seams on the road you pieced together so looking forward to the next video. Paper templates to fit the area too cool....Great video!
Thanks Will!!! And thanks for your continued support! I truly appreciate it! I think it’s important to create little stories with every scene, even if it’s a broken corner. 👍
Wow, some transformation there Jason, and all the better for being "not with the plan". It makes one heck of a difference to the layout having filled in the closet doorway, and that led to the harbour wall and even the road in the middle. Lovely work, it is so good to see your enthusiasm taking a turn away from kit building and into planet building. Any room for a fjord? If I lived on your side of the ocean I'd be over in a shot to help with the workshop tidy-up, just as long as you came back over to help me with mine! Ahem.
Yet again more amazing details. Was thinking that the wall on the footpath should be stone to show what was there before...change of shot and there it was lol. The road leading to the ferry, as well as bridges for road traffic and the trains what about pipe bridges for mains water and gas? Thinking that there wouldn't be many underground electric cables then to supply homes/businesses.
Hey Jason! Another great video. I'm heading back to Australia in a couple of weeks from the boat. If you have room and would like a 'guest' piece of waterfront I would be happy to send you a small diorama dock with the house barge and tug for inclusion on the waterfront. Save it siting at home gathering dust. Cheers.
Little bit of everything in this one, include you jamming to some tunes while painting the sky. :) No need to apologize either. Thanks and take care Jason!
Awesome work as always with tutorials. Reality in dwarfed downsize in layout. Leave the bridge V section open. NO TOP is my opinion in this virtual episode from your peanut gallery, lol. Looking forward to back section along with diorama.
Wow, this job is great. I'd like to share with you my experience with salt... I've found that using it as an ink mask can be a bad idea as it reacts with moisture and starts to "cry"... hahahahaha... a kit of one 1943 BMW motorcycle with sidecar that I used salt to give the texture of rust swollen paint, started to drip water. Detail the weather was rainy. A big hug Jason, stay safe
Another fantastic video with lots of techniques and tricks to try. Layout is looking amazing!!!! Love all your ideas and processes can't wait to see what you do next!! You make me wish I had the space to do something like your layout Soooo Amazing!!! Great job!!!
I love your skyline! Your clouds look amazing, though I think it's missing mountains. The scale is just right, the whole thing gives the impression one is flying by in a plane or helicopter. Anyways thanks again for the video. John S.
Just stumbled across your channel and I’m blown away, by what you have so far 🙌 The vibe and scenery, reminded me of Howard Zane’s HO layout, when I first saw it, which is very impressive, considering he’s up there imho, as one of the GOAT’s
When you get to the point of putting figures on this, you gotta put that kid -- or a couple of those kids -- on that sidewalk watching. I figure most of them wouldn't be standing, though; they'd be sitting dangling their feet off the side.
Foam wizardry! Not sure how some of the thin foam pieces would translate into N scale. Perhaps styrene would work better. But I really like how you use foam boxes and slabs to create elevation changes.
It is amazing how fast basic scenery forms go together using the foam, not super cheap, but WOW!. Nice work Jason, loving it all!, Can you post/provide a link to that Foam cutter you are using? Looks like an awesome investment
Thank you so much Sammi!!! Always great to hear from you! The hot wire foam cutter is made by Proxxon. I believe you can find it on Amazon. I think they cost about $100. Definitely a great investment! 👍
Hello Jason, it is a nice work, i like it! But with my view from the outside: there are a lot of new ropes on a lot of old posts. Do you see what i mean? Greetings from the little town in the north of Nuremberg😉😀 Manfred
No need to apologize, ever. Couple of questions: When you remove your buildings and then place them back. Do you ever forget or decide to place them in a different order? And, has your wife ever come in the room and made suggestions?
Hey Lynn! I take LOTS of photos on my cell phone for reference but I do change it some times. My wife does make some suggestions. She always loves to see what I’m working on. She is so supportive!!!
I absolutely love your work and attention to detail. Can I ask what era and geographic location are you replicating. Seems like 40’s-50’s but not sure.
I watched one of older videos, when you was adding a small bridge with rock molds from old layouts. Do you have any videos or pictures of old layout you could post?
Hi guys! If You wont mind, i hawe a question, which material was those stonewall castings made of? (I plan to make a support wall and some functional bridges, that's why i wonder)
I feel like there is a definite lack of bird poop on a lot of those water-side horizontal surfaces. Loving this so far!

Thank you so very much Sean!!! Glad to have you along for the journey! 👍
Rabbit holes are everywhere, but aren’t they fun?
When you get to the point of putting figures on this, you gotta put that kid -- or a couple of those kids -- on that sidewalk watching. I figure most of them wouldn't be standing, though; they'd be sitting dangling their feet off the side.
Great idea! Thanks! And thanks for watching!!! 👍
@@JasonJensenTrains very cool, i think I am going to need (AKA WANT) one LOL
Hello Jason, it is a nice work, i like it! But with my view from the outside: there are a lot of new ropes on a lot of old posts. Do you see what i mean? Greetings from the little town in the north of Nuremberg😉😀 Manfred
Thank you so very much!!! I know what you mean and I keep meaning to stain the ropes on the layout. I’ll get to it some day. 👍
An inch, that gives you about 7 feet or so in scale right? Sounds like plenty of space for a sturdy bridge with some clearance leftover
Thanks for the input! I really do appreciate it! 👍
Jason, u really do some detailed work. So meticulous. Question. What kind of camera do u use for shooting your vids? They are so vivid and clear.
I absolutely love your work and attention to detail. Can I ask what era and geographic location are you replicating. Seems like 40’s-50’s but not sure.
Beautiful! Did you cast those stone walls at the water yourself?
Thank you so much Ray!!! Yes, I have a couple molds.
Me! Just to be able to talk to you, you have to be just an awesome source information!
I watched one of older videos, when you was adding a small bridge with rock molds from old layouts. Do you have any videos or pictures of old layout you could post?
I have pictures on my Facebook page at Jason Jensen Trains of my old layout. I’ll try to include some pictures of it in a future video.
Have been watching your videos for a long time did not know you had Facebook page. Will join.
Jason, my name is Doug Wilson from Yellow Hawk Customs Outdoors channel. great videos man. What kind of camera do u shoot with? Hello?
Hi guys! If You wont mind, i hawe a question, which material was those stonewall castings made of?
(I plan to make a support wall and some functional bridges, that's why i wonder)
The stone walls are plaster. I have a couple molds and pour plaster in them. Thanks for watching!!!
@@JasonJensenTrains Thank You!
Personally I’d have made that gap a river pouring into the sea...
Did you make the molds yourself? Or is there a vendor? I have tried to make some molds, but they did not come out very well.
I bought a wall from Woodland Scenic and made a couple molds of it. I also use a wall from Chooch.
I'd love to come over and help clean up. Need help with anything else?
It’s such a big mess! Thanks for watching David!!! I really appreciate it! 👍
🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂
Hmm… I’m trying to figure out your favorite part of model railroading. 🧐🤨
Rabbit holes are everywhere, but aren’t they fun?
LOL! Yes they are!!! Thanks for watching! 👍
