Having David around totally negates Ann being a single woman in the world.

She was very much a single woman even with David around. He was constantly asking her to marry him which she constantly refused, and they never consummated their relationship. Not even once. (according to an interview with Richard Masur).

I was a single mom and I thank God there was always a man I knew who was willing to come over and help me with odd and end things so I didn't have to call a plumber or whatever to get those things done. It doesn't change the fact someone is a single mom if she asks a friend to help her from time to time or if they are friends. Every mom needs a friend.

@@lorimast No, I meant romantically. The whole part of the show is that she’s single. Also, not only did the character of David never work, but neither did Ginny. Ann didn’t need a ditzy friend or a romantic lead.

@@nope4no1 The point is that Ann wouldn’t ask any man for help. She knew she could do it on her own.
