I made it to Barrow, Alaska - the northernmost tip of the USA. And my first order of business was going to the local supermarket to see how expensive everything was!! $20 for a roll of toilet paper? $7 for a Gatorade?

My friend lives in a very remote part of the world, only accessible via a tiny plane or a 4 day hike through the Himalayan Mountains. (Tiny village in Nepal, very high elevation, very isolated) however despite that the markets have been able to keep their prices at affordable levels for most of the residents. He is definitely very thankful for that, if the prices where like this, he and his family would starve. Made me wonder how prices there are able to stay so low there despite the remoteness.

I love how it says "Everyday Low Price!" at 4:57 and it's 14.99 for 12 cans of Dr. Pepper...wow 💀. And yup, there's a Filipino restaurant there! The northernmost carinderia in the world! This is the same situation with the communities of northern Quebec like Puvirnituq! Air Inuit uses Boeing 737s for Combi purposes, as in they carry both passengers and cargo, and they do this throughout the year because there are no roads connecting these communities to the rest of Quebec. This really puts into perspective just how lucky we are in more developed places like the Lower 48 states compared to remote places like Puvirnituq and Utqiagvik, and we should be thankful regardless for what we have.
In McMurdo Station, Antarctica, they get one ship a YEAR for food shipments to the base to feed the researchers. This means because they're stuck with whatever they got from that one shipment, they end up recycling food and serving it as leftovers. That also includes serving expired food because well, when you're in a remote place like Antarctica...an expiration date is just a suggestion. And the researchers need a huge number of calories to work out in harsh temperatures

The same stuff down in Wichita, KS would cost closer to $35 which is still relatively high compared to a decade ago but it shows the disparities between locations.

You mean cheap or expensive? I found the prices there were not bad.
It isn't as expensive as this around the east coast. Especially if you shop at Aldi. If you head into very isolated, rural communities in Australia, I'd say the prices are similar to Barrow.
I was just in Melbourne for two and a half weeks in May (2023). I stayed in the neighborhood of Caulfield because there's a large Jewish community there. Kosher food is a fortune there. The one Coles location that has kosher meat is Coles Elsternwick on Glenhuntly Road. I was told by the family we stayed with that Coles Elsternwick is one of the busiest Coles locations in the country. Most groceries have to be imported so that's why it's so expensive. Gasoline there is $1.80 a liter (for Americans that's $6.80 a gallon) because they have heavy gasoline taxes.

I live in NYC, and as expensive it is in certain markets for certain food products, Barrow definitely takes the prize for the most expensive Supermarket.

Growing up in Nome was quite similar, but it had 2 stores (Alaska Commercial Company and a Safeway).
Nome however gets 2 grocery barges a year (I think Utqiagvik gets 1 a year, if weather permits), so people majorly bulk order, outside of trips where they mail food to themselves.
Im surprised that there's Filipinos there honestly I was like wow!! Besides that these prices Alaska is what I'm expecting to see in grocery stores with these inflation happening now

I'm curious to know the salaries/hourly wages of everyone living there because these prices are insane. At least in NY City they pay "premium" wages to slightly offset the cost of living.

Paper towels for top brand, for 2 big ones, is easily $6-7

IN TRINIDAD it would b cheaper but not buy much cause we import a lot but also have alot of things we dont need to import so it varies in price
This is crazy. I really wonder if the locals are earning more money or are there trade-offs like tax breaks, super cheap homes and property taxes, super low fuel prices, etc.
They subsistence hunt for whales, seal, bear, caribou, and forage for berries etc to make up for the insane grocery prices. Everyone in Alaska uses Amazon prime. Most inhabitants are part of native corporations so they get payouts or gov assistance since there’s not many jobs there.
They get paid to live there 💀

About the alcohol in Alaska, if u fall drunk or stay in the car drunk on the streets u might freeze to death. They might want to make sure u get drunk indoors or on a porch.
I guess I shouldn't complain about inflation in America. I went grocery shopping this evening and bought over 4 recyclable bags full of groceries for just under $70 via a lot of sale items and using store coupons. I used to spend around $30 per trip, but at least it's not as bad as Barrow, Alaska. Wow!

My boys from Alaska and they make more per hour than we do plus they get paid every year to just live in Alaska alone. One crazy thing is that backwoods are 16 dollars

That is the downside of living in Alaska. Here in Oman I went to a Lulu hypermarket the other night and saw that the kefir I bought in usa for like 3 or 4 dollars was 12 dollars here! Of course I passed on that cant afford it and not worth it. But that produce in Burrow looked so much better than the produce here.
The Utqiagvik/Barrow area has been home to the Iñupiat for more than 1,500 years. Archaeological sites in the area indicate the Iñupiat lived around Utqiagvik as far back as 500 AD. Remains of 16 sod dwelling mounds, from the Birnirk culture of about 800, can be seen on the shore of the Arctic Ocean. The city's Iñupiaq name refers to a place for gathering wild roots. It is derived from the Iñupiat word utqiq, a word also used for Beringian springbeauty which is a perennial herb indigenous to Alaska, Siberia, and northwestern Canada. The former name Barrow was derived from Point Barrow (which is 9 miles northeast of the city; and is the actual northernmost point in the US) and was originally a general designation because non-native Alaskan residents found it easier to pronounce than the Iñupiaq name. Point Barrow in turn was named after Sir John Barrow of the British Admiralty by explorer Frederick William Beechey in 1825. It wasn't until 2016 that the city approved changing its name to Utqiagvik.
In Morden, Manitoba, Canada, we would pay around $30 CAD for that.

The pay in Alaska is way more then in the other 49 states thats why its expensive. I use to work at Walmart in the mid west us at the time i was a truck unloader the pay was $10 an hour and that was the least payed job at walmart and at the time i was thinking of transferring to the Walmart in Alaska because the pay was $25 an hour to do the same thing i was already doing and that was still the least payed job there.

spend more and buy organic milk. Yes it costs more, but compare the expiration dates to non-organic and taste the difference. Trust me. I get my organic milk from walmart, some $6 a gallon.

The cheapest gallon of milk I can get is $2.79 at a BJ’s wholesale club. If I go to my local supermarket like ShopRite, it would cost $4.99.

this kind of prices don't shock me as a Pole this prices in ratio to avarage salary is pretty much the same as in Poland. Of course if you convert prices to USD Poland will be cheap but if you compare prices to average salary it will be almost the same as alaskan. also many other Eastern European countries have the same problem. For outsiders it's very cheap but for its residents it's very expensive.
Honesty the prices in Seattle are not that far off unless you’re talking about local in season produce which Alaska obviously doesn’t have. We have a sugar sweetened beverage tax here and to buy a case of cokes it’s around $30
Paper towels are easily 5-7 so is a jar of peanut butter or a tub of ice cream. $19-26 for a steak. Meat is around 13-15 a pound unless you find it on clearance or in bulk. I’ve had to start shopping for groceries and dry goods at big lots instead of Safeway
I went out for burgers at a local takeout place not a fancy sit down place and it cost me $40 for two cheeseburgers a large fries and a chocolate shake
