KUMITE DRILLS: Footwork and Fitness

  • The best thing for a karate-ka to invest in is their footwork (movement). Through Kihon training, a karate-ka will naturally develop a powerful, fast, accurate strike -- the key for combat however is to be able to land those strikes in a moving, chaotic situation.
    Furthermore to avoid being struck by an attacker who will most likely be much larger.
    Footwork is about developing speed in the legs, stability in our position and the ability to either move out of the way, or in to strike in a dynamic fashion.
    This video features two drills, one more basic than the second.

      I remember doing this exercise in Shotokan Karate, but we were to taught to keep our back leg straight and not to come up on the ball of the foot....If you did that in Kumite our instructor would not award you the point.

    Rizal D Johan, what was posted here is ippon kumite drills. Not a video to compare traditional karate kumite drills vs Kickboxing. No disrespect; hence, unless someone takes it there. Why make comments like to compare Kyokushin kai ( Sosai Oyama the founder of Kyokushin kai was one of Gogen Yamaguchi students and Tazaki Sensei training dojo big brothers), or full contact this or that about these techniques. These karate techniques are to be used for a different situation. That is why I ask the question : "why bring those statements up?"
    I am the same karate style as they are but only under a teachers Higaonna Sensei ( Okinawa, Japan, and every corner of the World including Russia, China, North & South America), and Hu Sensei ( Hawaii and the Mainland USA).
    I've train in under the best Goju-ryu karate instructors in the world. I also trained in Kyokushin kai , and Ashihara karate, and under Rickson Gracie at his Pacific Palisades, Wilshire Boulevard, Pico Boulevard Jiu Jitsu Academies as his student. I have also trained with martial arts teachers that taught me rare martial arts. Things like using Raw Meat to to hang off the human body . if done like what you were talking about in the street fight situation that's ma'am that would put me into the category of breaking the law and going directly to jail for a long time. just because a person knows how to shoot a gun does not mean they should be shooting the gun on the streets. Goju-ryu involves techniques of neck breaking, & eye gouging. Yes, I trained these techniques both in theory and application. we were lucky enough to have doctors who worked in the ER and have seen these things we were lucky enough to have doctors who worked in the ER and have experience and receiving patients in the hospital who had their necks broke ( Theory),& at my dojo we used goggles made of a hard materials for the eyewear ~ to be used for thumbing the eyes ( application). Have I use them in a street fight to harm somebody? I'm not going to comment on that; for like a negativeposting about the techniques on this video, it
    would be really stupid upon my part because it would Implement that me in a crime. Just like it's kind of stupid to compare karate or kickboxing or octagon fighting or Kyokushin kai techniques. Again must I remind you of another thing that Mas Oyama Sosai ( the founder of Kyokushin kai ) was a student of Gogen Yamaguchi Hanshi in his Goju-Ryu karate dojo. There's only one thing that this does when you compare a set of techniques in the negative fashion to another instructor about what he is sharing on UA-cam. that would be to start a verbal text fight. I seen enough of that on here. The set of techniques are not meant for the Octagon, but these techniques are for the karate dojo for ippon kumite drills. They involve neurological reaction and timing drills as well as physical kinesiology does the human body to generate speed and power
    My advice to you or to anybody else is be very careful about commenting on UA-cam. True martial arts is something that does not speak negatively unless in a situation of life and death techniques. At that point : " Speaking is right out the window; hence, because your to busy trying to save your life!" You can save the trash talk in the end; hence ( maybe say something like when you get up off the ground try to act like the rest of Society by being non-violent by following the law),but still done with class as you leave your attacker on the ground. Like Higaonna Sensei taught karate begins and ends with respect. if I have offended you (?) I am sorry for we must all apply what my teacher said here. UA-cam is full of people that offend others and I do not wish to add on to their numbers I'm simply making a statement you're comparing apples with oranges.😉🤙

  • @rockyl9120

    The reverse punch technique..The point of the front hand or ‘guard’ is to grab onto the opponent / aggressor and hold on to set a datum in the confusion of a fight so as to know where the opponent is and create leverage so you can pull the opponent in for the back hand to smash in repeatedly as hard and as many times as possible until they are immobilised. Imagine 2 cars in a head on collision. The stance for reverse punch is a teaching method to show students the body & weight position when transitioning in order to carry this out. Sadly this has now been westernised as to what will look best to score a point in sport karate. Far removed from the original intention of ‘reverse punch’

    • @GKRKarate

      Hi Darren, you are conflating self-defence training with point fighting training. When we practice Kihon, we develop the principles of movement/body mechanics etc. From there, we can easily adapt to either point fighting training or combat training. They are vastly different yet adopt similar principles. This is obviously focused purely on the point fighting side.
      Secondly, to suggest a lunge is to grab an opponent is dogmatic thinking. There are countless applications for this combination. Imagine a small person using their front hand to grab onto the arm of a significantly larger person? It would be a complete failure.

    In 1994 a S.A lost his life when he took a kick to the head during competition at the 1994 Pre-World Karate Tournament. When those posting speak of karate competition being non contact ~ you do not know what you are talking about. In 1981, AAU Karate National for the USA. Over a 126 people went to the hospital for major injuries. Not just a bloody nose, but busted orbital sockets, head injuries, broken bones. Come on man, people that speak of traditional karate being non contact do not know because most have never fought in traditional tournaments for any length of time. Like I said about the South African fighter who was killed in competition in 1994 Pre World Karate Championships. He lost his life, so try not to speak about things you do not know about.

    Rizal D Johan, it's all about the training and where you want to take it man I used hockey gear to kick The Shins and knees I use it for several different reasons. First it gives me the ability to kick The Shins and knees at full contact which otherwise would break the kneecaps and shins cuz my kicks will bust a athletic cup very easily. The hockey gear is 50 times stronger than athletic cup. And the second reason is for protection for my students kneecaps and shins cuz those techniques are very dangerous.

    Great training. Although you can have as many theories as you can but as soon as you step into a full contact setting, all these theories will go down the drain, you will have to deal with other aspects that you never thought of when you do this kind of traditional non-contact martial art. If you are from shotokan, muscle endurance and pain will be new things for you when you start training kyokushin or muaythai, even the body mechanics will be a lot different. You cannot assume things anymore like in this situation. The bow and arrow assumption will not be applicable then as you and your opponent will have different reaction under full contact systems

    • @kenkongermany7860
      @kenkongermany7860 7 років тому +3

      The in and out is still the useful thing. The feel for long distance is good in WKF Kumiteguys. One can see it not only in the more popular MMA karateka. And non contact is just a word. But you have the stop and "crying for the ref check" after the harder hits - that IS a bad habbit for full contact with no point stop.

The things that you post on here about these techniques not being effective damn full contact is BS. My teacher has Dojo full of students that watched that man pass away in Okinawa during that competition from the same type of karate techniques that you are speaking of. What happened there's a tragedy because the South African fighter passed away from that kick. Things like that are just one of the reasons that they have kept karate out of the Olympics. Your point about this man karate techniques will only cause a problem. It is not meant to be put into a category like you're putting it in. It is meant to be what it is a dojo exercise for karate people who want 2 train in point sparring. Must I remind you about the South African fighter who lost his life at the pre World Tournament? What you may not think these techniques are dangerous given the right terms the right situation they can be very dangerous. You're comparing apples to oranges and it makes no sense to do so!

    On punch heel should remain planted firmly on the ground connecting through the leg, hips and shoulders.

    • @GKRKarate
      @GKRKarate  2 роки тому

      The heel can remain on the ground in a shorter, higher stance. But to gain reach (as in this drill), to have a longer, lower stance, having the heel on the ground would greatly reduce both reach an power. That said, even in shorter stances, the heel being on the ground usually weakens a punch. The heel being on the ground in a Zenkutsu dachi is more for grappling, but not striking.

      "Square on" referees to the 4 right angles between the hips of two combatants forming a square and facing each other. It is as opposed to "side on". So beyond square means you reach a bit more to make extra distance.

    Karate can not really be hit, otherwise it is disqualified. Consequently these movements and this time are NOT to hit but to pretend to hit. In a truly realistic, self-defense or even MMA combat, movements and timing MUST ALWAYS be related to the real effectiveness of the technique. These 2 young men, in a real fight, would go to the hospital after a few tens of seconds. Karate of this type is good for fun, for playing, for health, etc. To really fight, you need very little.

    • @robcastro2997

      Hi Shoto Lui. Good observation. Iv'e studied many martial arts over the years beginning with karate. If you have not learned Karate from a reputable instructor (and it sounds like you have not otherwise you would know) then its easy to see this one drill and draw conclusions from it. It sounds like you are not a martial artist because almost all marital artist practice without contact for their training ( boxers, MMA, Muay Thai, Taekwando etc) Karate is not different. This is one type of training for one type of sports karate. It is not all that Karate is. There are some MMA practitioners that use this same movement and have been very successful. An example of something not shown here is the pulling of the hand in a self defence situation is for grabbing in many cases and most schools I have been to include this in their training although some mcdojos don't. I think that you are looking at this variation of sports karate and drawing conclusions and it would be a shame for you to miss out on some really good training methods for that reason if you are interested in learning martial arts.
