I like watching these videos after finally entering vet school. Makes me remind of the days where I was dreaming about it in high school decided to take academics seriously. I am 22 now.
When I was little, I wanted to be a veterinarian, but when I grew up, I started to be scared of blood, and I dont know if I would be able to follow that dream, but with ur information I am getting a big courage to do it, thanks 🩷
I love this!! I definitely think you should try to get some experience in the field bc I’ve met people who don’t like human blood but can still do vet stuff! There’s also lots of things you can do with animals not related to blood :)
you can totally work on it! I don't love blood but have gotten wayyyy better when I took a co-op. Now the only thing that slightly bothers me is the needle going into the skin. It doesn't actually make me feel uncomfortable my eyes just get watery. Good luck!
I have a similar problem. I would love to become a veterinarian, but I’m squeamish about saliva and anything involving the mouth. Im okay with blood, urine, and all that stuff but I cannot stand anything that is related to the mouth area. I think it’ll be okay though
In my country, we have to decide what we wanna study at like 14-15yo. I was so lost at that time. Until I remembered the little girl who promised to be a veterinarian. And then it clicked. I suddenly had some massive motivation to study hard for the exams that were supposed to decide my future. And I did it. I'm a vet student since this September. It's going pretty well. Btw im 15.
1 second ago Just here to acknowledge that it takes guts to do this and I’m so happy to see you not taking yourself too seriously! For anyone reading this, she is just as genuine and sweet irl and I have a feeling you’re going to want to stick around to see what’s next ;)
honestly the 8 yrs of study was intimidating, but the thought of working with blood and other such things is making me so unsure plus with how mentally and emotionally demanding this job is
Im a girl living in a small town and a very unheard of City. I've been dealing with animals every since i was a kid, and i know i wanna pursue this career in a lager town. Current in high-school but i keep stressing about how i can even apply for this because my familys low income. I think my best option would be to aim for a scholarship but im not that confident.
Awesome and interesting video, I love these little illustrations, looking forward to the q&a (I would love to know more about internships that you did and maybe what were your responsibilities, etc.)
This is great information I feel much better in my decision thank you ! I’m going to finish watching this later but take notes cause I’m doing the dishes rn 😂😂
Omg thank you so much for answering the question about what we need to do in high school. I don't have any vets near me that have internships so it really took some stress off 😭😭
I did very poorly in high school because I knew I wouldn’t stand a chance in college and knew I’d be in construction but I’ve recently been motivated by a new friend to start thinking about a long term career and now at 23 I feel like I can actually go through college but I feel like my poor GPA from high school is going to get in the way of
hiii i’m a high schooler hoping to become a vet and this video was so helpful especially since i related to so much of what you said. a few questions though-when you showed the total number of hours on your app, there’s 1500 extracurricular. what does that mean, like college clubs? also, did you get the research by emailing a professor you knew or some other way? is volunteer experience less valuable than paid jobs, or should i still do both? thank you if you ever answer this question (altho i know it’s a year late) 😊
Hi!! I’m so glad this was helpful hehe! So 1500 extracurricular included mostly clubs and a scholarship program I was in and events I worked on with that! I got my research position just by looking up professors in my field, reading some papers they’ve published to see who was most interesting to me, and then emailing them to ask if they had any openings for student research! I think paid and volunteer can be equally important! I don’t think you can go wrong either way tbh but I think doing at least some of both is good! Feel free to dm me on Instagram @cindydoinstuff if you ever have more questions!! Good luck ❤
I want to become a veterinarian when I’m older but I’m worried if I’ll find a work environment suited for me. Are all veterinarian hospitals small and local?
Im a jumior in high school, and ive loved the fact about working with animals since i could first speak. Im taking my vet med and advanced animal sciences classes. Im also active in ffa serving as an officer, showing poultry, rabbits, and sheep. Along with that im in marching band and concert band. What would be a good next step for my senior year as for jobs or working in a clinic? Also anyone have advice on what would be good for after high school? I plan on taking the vet courses at my local community college before going anywhere big!
Hey, I have a question. I’m not sure if you’ll be able to answer it because my situation is pretty different from yours. How do I prepare for vet school if I’m homeschooled?
I'm so scared of birds and animals with wings and beaks I'm so scared of them what should I do should I choose this degree? Or it is a bad idea for me? Please let me know❤
I know this was posted a while ago but right now I’m in my first year of my undergraduate and I’m so nervous for the future due to the expected gpa keep getting higher and higher. Do you have any advice for how to improve your GPA? I’m second semester right now so I don’t know my cumulative yet but I’m so nervous😭😔. Thank you in advance if you see this💗🤍
that is a great question! No, they don't overlap. I was recommended by my advisor to keep everything seperate (I think according to the guidelines you are not allowed to have experiences count for double time. I hope that makes sense!
@@cindydoinstuff Thanks so much!! What kinds of things did you do for volunteer experience that didn’t constitute as animal experience? I currently volunteer at a couple animal rescues and I assume that would be put under animal experience, so I’m not sure what other things I could do for volunteer experience
Mmm tbh no 😂 I use my calculator for any math I do now. Most of it will be drug calculations which is pretty simple, none of the fancy stuff they might make you take in undergrad :)
You can definitely make your focus on marine animals or even do internships or experiences on the coast and work with marine animals. I know a girl at OSU vet school who went and worked with sea turtles.
I’m still pretty young just really looking at this vet and I have a huge huge love for animals I have always wanted to be a vet since I used to play with those animals toys the small acting figure ones that you could find out like a target I had hundreds and would play vet I’m still really into becoming a vet since blood and all that don’t bother me personally just I’m scared that when a get to the time to actually be looking at college I won’t be smart enough to live up to my dream
Hi, I'm pre vet right now. I will say there is a lot of different research you can do. It doesn't even need to be directly related to animals. Studying in a lab on campus related to virology, immunology, or morphology could be really helpful!
woah, that was really interesting and also very enlightening for me as a 18yo who is still trying to apply to college, plus I am from Brazil, so it's kind of very different from your experience, probably, but could you tell me if is there any exchange programs at your school or if you know any? it's literally a dream to work as a veterinarian, and to do it overseas would be a great experience ❤️
I am an upcoming junior in high school planning to go into running start at WSU, do you know any vet students who went through running start and what they think about it. It's definitely a smart financial decision, but I'm wondering how much it will really impact my schooling. :) (also I'm not sure if running start is like a nationally used term or not, but if not, its taking classes at a college before graduating hs that your hs school pays for)
Paying off student loans is tough for sure, almost everyone in school struggles with that so you won’t be alone! Typically I think most people just pay it off after they graduate. Working during school won’t make much of a dent 😅
If I dropped a level chemistry and no longer have chemistry but I do biology , marine and psychology . Can I still become a vet and do vet biosciences??
It depends on the school! Different vet schools have different requirements but I do think most of them require a lot of chemistry credits. I had to do quantitative chem, organic chemistry 1/2, biochemistry
Does being at a good University affect your admission into Veterinary School at all? Theres only about 5 Veterinary focused Schools here in Canada so it’s really easy to feel like I’m not doing enough…
I think a lot of people think grades can make or break you! But honestly schools are much more holistic and look for a lot of different qualities from students! Typically i feel like having experience is more important
I'm not really good at English but i hope you'll understand me, so i have a question i guess it's about the fear from the animals well i love them and i like play with them feed them cats, dog, squares sometimes but i get nervous cause I'm afraid that they'll bite me or scratch me or something, do you have a solution or a way could help cause i really really want to be a vet🥺❤🩹
Was the internship paid or unpaid. I’m thinking of doing a internship at my local zoo but it’s difficult because it’s unpaid and I have a part time job on top of school I need to have in order to pay for housing and school tuition not covered by scholarships
a lot of internships in this field are unpaid unfortunately but I would look into seeing if your school offers grants to cover the cost of your living during an unpaid internship! I used this resource a lot! But also sometimes I think it is beneficial to do an unpaid internship even if it means you have to dip into your savings just because having an awesome experience is worth more than money in the long run!!
