PLEASE do that podcast!!! I had a year of confronting the fact that I'm chronically ill and going from someone who felt like they were smashing life to genuinely questioning whether I could work 5 days a week at all. Hearing about organisation and productivity from that perspective would be incredible and help so much. Like, how can you be productive when you feel like you need to sleep every couple of hours? How can I be my best and smash it when my brain is full of bees? Seriously Hannah, I think that would be so great. One committed listener here already 👋

The productivity podcast through an anti-capitalist and disability lense sounds very interesting! I feel like the productivity side of UA-cam is very focussed on "get up a 5am, read 7 books a week, exercise for hours daily" which is just not feasible for most people let alone people with disabilities/chronic pain/illnesses. I would love a new perspective!

Hannah I would absolutely love an anti-capitalist & disability focused podcast about productivity etc! A lot of creators are all very much about the 'girl boss' mentality and 'rise & grind' whereas it would be so refreshing and lovely to de-center the capitalist elements to that! I think I would find it so useful as someone who struggles with my mental & physical health to understand actual realistic and achievable productivity aims rather than feel overwhelmed and expect too much of myself or feel like I'm not achieving as much as others.

Care Work: Dreaming Disability Justice is not specifically productivity focused but it does take on a wide range of issues, including creating and "being productive", through the lens of disability. It was a book that really challenged me this year and got me thinking in new ways. I listened to the audiobook and would highly recommend. I also think the author (Leah Lakshmi) would be an incredible person to interview on Doing It.

For creative free time I don't think it's enough to free up the time. Have you ever read Julia Cameron's "The Artist's Way?" I'm in school studying music composition and this requires me to pick a time to be creative. It is weird at first but I actually get more done by sitting down and forcing myself to write music than when I wait for inspiration to strike. The issues I have found is that when I wait for inspiration to strike it happens at inconvenient times so I never make that much progress with those ideas. But if I jot down the notes when the inspiration strikes than look at the notes during my creative time it works better for me.

omg anticapitalist/disability productivity podcast would be a HUGE yes from me. it's such a fraught space - i feel like i've used things I've learned from engaging with productivity culture to define and protect boundaries/ understand the limitations of work spaces i've been in, but it's always work to 'translate' that usefulness out of the capitalist framework/ apply it to my life as a mentally ill person, and also to avoid getting sucked in to the worst impulses of that world.

I also didn't make any resolutions in January because my chronic illness flared up really badly and I didn't know what would happen to me, but I have wanted to write a longer fanfic for ages, and for camp nanowrimo I decided to set a goal of 15,000 words in July. And, despite another flare up halfway through I'm very close to being back on track with 10,000 words so far! I'm super pleased with this, mainly because it's really fun and I'm excited for people to read it, but also because it's one of my first goals that I purposefully made achievable and reasonable, and I did it! It'll be so nice to say I've won camp nanowrimo, and that I kept my promise to myself :)

Hey Hannah :) A note on the "content creation hamster wheel" (love that name): I've been a blogger for 5 years and I'm relaunching youtube TOMORROW! I'm excited, but the reason it didn't work out before was because I felt like you. From 5 years I've blogging I've learnt to batch content when I'm feeling creative, so that I can rest when I'm not. I can film 2-3 videos in a day, or write 4-5 articles when I'm feeling inspired. That way if I don't feel like creating then I just don't for a while, but my audience never realise because there's always content going out :)

yes to the anti-capitalist disability podcast! all I see online is about hustling/grinding, founding your own businesses and making lots of money. I know many people with chronic illnesses, mental issues etc. (myself included) that just can’t keep up with that. we feel bad for things we often can’t change, when it’s actually the system that’s massively flawed.

I got in contact with the stop smoking team at my local hospital. Quit at the end of January with the patches and have now done 6 months of not smoking and 2 weeks without any nicotine replacement!!

For the creativity one, I agree with you can’t block time and just say time to be creative! BUT you could carve out time during the week whether it is an hour or half a day where it is free time to do whatever your heart desires. Sometimes that might be vacuuming, reading a book, working on a new project idea, whatever you want! It builds in time for flexibility without the daunting task of it must be something creative! Naturally creative things will happen sometimes.

I think creativity is so much like sexual drive:
    you can’t force it
    it pops up randomly
you need to be fairly happy, healthy and not stressed in order for it to thrive
so treat creativity time like sex, have blocks of time where you are open to it during the week, but it doesnt mean you have to. if you are in the mood - great! if not, all good.
maybe an hour before work or an hour in the evening most days. then after doing it a few times you find your rhythm and what/when works for you. what turns it on? what environment do you need?
    good luck!

Can you be creative at the snap of your fingers? Well, kinda yes, having a creative professions stimulated me to learn some tips and tricks on that. Yeah, sometimes you sparkle with ideas, and sometimes you feel sloppy, but you still need to get work done.) The hardest part in this state of mind is to actually start doing something.
Allocating time for creativity is a good strategy, I guess it didn't work because you had no plan for this "creativity sessions". So you've got this dump of huge ideas, you can try brainstorm some of these ideas during these creative time, play around it, try to mind-map it, learn something about this idea, so step by step it will be more real. Or may be you can brainstorm how to fit this amount of projects in your schedule - just make a list of things and choose what sparkles your creativity this week.
There're a lot of technics you can use to boost your creativity in the moment:
    1) making some restrictions for this session (don't use specific words/colors, trying to write down 10 ways to use some ordinary item you have - like watch or a bow tie, etc).
    2) Try out different brainstorming techniques. Sometimes it helps to mind map, or draw something abstract, and sometimes you just need to start writing down everything that comes to mind, even: "Nothing comes to mind, what should I write about? Do I have to do it for another 15 minutes? How do I feel about it?"
    3) Make it a party! If there're people who sparkle your creativity, try to include them in these sessions, and may be together it'll work much better. A lot of times when I struggle with some idea at work, I just need to chat about it with my colleagues, to hear their opinions and questions.
    4) And if you really want to bring it to another level, you might check out TRIZ or TIPS (it's called Theory of inventive problem solving in English) - there're some practical methods on how to find a creative solution to your problem. It teaches you to turn your ideas around by formulating the contradiction in your problem (for example, you need more content to earn money, but you need less content so you can have some free time), several ideal results of this contradictions (for example - content creates itself, creating more content doesn't take more time, etc). This theory was designed for solving engineering problems, but some of its principles can be applied to any problem.
I hope some of this tips will help you you!

What about setting 'creative free time' almost like a budget? So like give yourself X amount of time per week/day that when you feel inspired, you have X amount of time to spend on it that day/week etc? No idea if that makes sense but feels like it might work?

Oh it's quite funny, I am a German who started watching you to understand English better and now you are learning German.
Ich wünsche dir ganz viel Glück und Erfolg beim Deutsch lernen, lass dich von "der, die, dass" nicht unterkriegen.

Might be a bad idea but I have always wondered what would happen if you treated UA-cam like a podcast and posted videos in seasons instead of weekly to allow for creative breaks. Has anyone tried this?

hannah would you be interested in a part time researcher? bc my lord that job sounds fascinating :D hiring someone like a uni student would also mean having access to that database and therefore tons of academic articles. Might be good for someone to do 8hrs a week or something!

As someone who also creates UA-cam videos I can totally relate to the content creation hamster wheel. If anyone has any tips for dealing with this, please share!🙏

Stop being so good at everything! lol I know you're not an Intuitive personality type, because you're not messy enough. :P I'm guessing ESTJ, because that the way you bitches are and I'm ALWAYS JEALOUS. The personality type functions are fun, once you get into them. I'd love to see you do more with that, because people are so uneducated about it. It isn't everyone's aptitude, though, but I'm still waiting to hear more people explain it to the other people... :) I'm INFP. (INFP: Fi Ne Si Te/ ESTJ: Te Si Ne Fi)

I highly recommend divergent_design_studio on instagram as a resource for work/productivity/creativity through an anti-capitalist, neurodiverse lens. As an autistic & ADHD person she's the first person I've found who approaches those things in a way that makes sense for the way my brain and body work.
