Ahh, when you could go to any part of Melbourne and instantly get a car park. What a horrible shell of a place Melbourne is now. I loved it as a kid and John Paul Young's music video of Yesterday's Hero in 1975 shows it exactly as my early memories do. School excursions (from Ferntree Gully) walking across Princes Bridge (my 3 x great grandfather worked on the original bridge in the late 1840's as a stonemason) and strangely you would always see someone you knew in Melbourne......it was in many ways a small place then.
Until a government realises that you cannot keep building on top of buildings, things will not change. The only way to make change, is for governments to move government departments to new locations that have room for expansion...hint : country areas. If the government goes, people will follow to keep their jobs. Canberra is a good example, why would you go there for any other reason ? ;)
I could probably almost get the time period a bit more accurate if I had a good think, I spotted the trams have "Metropolitan Transit" on them and can remember that very well as it was when I used to go to the footy with a couple of mates. It was a big day out for a teenager (b1967)....a one hour bus to Frankston, then train from Frankston to the City (another hour or so from memory ?) and from there it could be to any teams home ground. Some horrors - Kardinia Park, Windy Hill, Victoria Park, the Western Oval.
I recently posted a video by an Australian band Spy Vs Spy - Don't Tear It Down that deals with our history (homes, buildings), being torn down....and its from 1986 ! Ahead of its time and ironically around the time in this video. I hope Gezza1967 doesn't mind me posting the link as I feel its relevant ua-cam.com/video/HPa3UznshyQ/v-deo.html Trade unions once used to support the retention of historic buildings, now it is just greed, greed, greed.
I wont go to Melbourne anymore unless I have to, a mate went to the the footy to see the Hawthorn game the other day and was disgusted and doesn't want to go back. To top it off, he had a major altercation with an ice head window washer who jumped on his car and terrified his family. When told politely told no thanks, Mr Ice started screaming and foaming at the mouth that my mate is the reason that he cant see his kids. Personally, I think ice might be the real reason. Thanks for the video Gezza1967, cheers Austech

You make some fair points, theirs parts of Melbourne i hardly recognise any longer (specifically the southern part of the cbd and the cbd itself). Every time i go past the cbd theirs time i stop and stare and think how did it get so big and encroach into South Melbourne and it seems to keep getting larger in size by the day. Their was a time that you woudn't see a sky scraper until Flinders St, nowadays they are everywhere, Docklands, Southbank, South Melbourne - its becoming like Hong Kong. Mty beloved Port Melbourne is unrecognisable and lost its country town feel to become a suburb of apartments, but you know what ? Port Melbourne, Melbourne itself it may of changed, but I love it (except for the traffic and bad weather, drug problem and a dictator as a premier). It definetely had its faults but I wouldn't want to live anywhere else in the world, to me Melbourne is still number 1.

Thanks for video. I came here in 2007. From video, Looks like the City had a big building on flinders opposite church at that time. No Casino. Still all people were walking straight (rather than face down on their mobile like today😖), smiling and meeting real people rather than all Fakes online. Nice and calm and perfect prices to enjoy meals and play video games and outdoor activities mostly 👌🏻👌🏻

Back in the good old days when life was affordable. You didn't have to go into debt just to buy food. And you didn't need a million dollars to buy a house.

Proper Melbourne. The mid 80's, an absolute GOLDEN AGE!!!!! Now, we're engulfed by foreigners, outnumbered and overwhelmed anywhere we go across our own city. Faced with an extremely grim future if we don't reverse it. It's an absolute nightmare. Something we could barely even have imagined in the mid 80's.

Great comment. *Self-determination is a UN-recognised human right.* The world considers it vital for most people, such as the Tibetans, and criticizes China for moving Han Chinese into Tibet to swing their elections.
Our nation was given away *without our consent* , and the numbers of foreigners here are more than enough to swing elections to the party which offers them more, or which suits their political agenda. We Aussies must have control over our own nation back.

When I started watching it had not clicked that S & D meant Sons and Daughters and I recognized scenes and characters. I used to regularly watch it last year on weekday afternoons on 7two. They took it off air but all episodes are on 7+ so started watching all episodes from the beginning. There are SO many episodes. Only upto around episode 100 in series 1. Thanks for the editing. Love the cars, Melbourne scenes, hair and shoulder pads.

Mid ‘80s being a glory era for Australian music - I’d have chosen an INXS, Mondo Rock, Australian Crawl, Men at Work, Eurogliders or Models song instead! Men at Work’s Overkill would have been perfect 👌🏻
