How has speedcubing changed since the first world record? (ft. Matty, Leo, & Tymon)

- Speedcubing has without a doubt changed since the first world record in 1982. But what is different now in terms of how cubers approach their solve? In this video we take a close look at Minh Thai's 22.95 world record single, how he solved it, and compare it to modern top solvers walking through the same scramble. It is very apparent that they are better, but what impresses us the most is just how far into each solve modern solvers can see.

People like Tymon and Matty have clearly changed the long set standards for cubing these days
The fact that sub-6 averages appear so common now clearly shows how far cubing has came
Cause my memory sucks😅
@@polofnbryt4khdfbmcpebutido968 well cause Leo solves like max park which They have Very fast Tps but More like a Standard solution
@@Hctrbl but I'm just saying cus Leo was in the title
Sub 5s are common now lol
You have to remember the tried and true methods are already proven. You have to think about that. The original record was done with a method that requires at most two algorithms and that's only for the last 4 corners. All the edges are solved intuitively.
You also have to remember that back then, there was only literal Rubik's brand cubes. And if you think they are hard to turn these days, they were worse back then. Now a days you have layers that basically align themselves, pieces ergonomically designed so that a slight flick can do the same thing as a complete wrist turn. Cubes that can turn when layers aren't aligned properly. Combine that with the already expansive list of algorithms available. And there are still new algorithms being made for the same things but are faster to execute.
Very interesting, it never ceases to impress me how efficient and fast those top solvers are.
See you in about 40 years.
They saw the same pairs. I personally prefer Tymon's block-preserving style, but Matty's pseudoslots are easier to follow.
On Leo - Stickered Cube + Keychron!
And Matty miscrambled??? Not the same pair
A 22 second solve and 20 of those seconds were rotations 🤷♂️ how fast were those guys, on those cubes? 🙇 🙌❤️
The mini mat looks amazing
I remember back in the early 80's when I was in grade school, that the corner system was the desired system to learn for speed cubing, though most didn't use it starting out. As it was much more difficult to learn starting out. Most learned how to solve it via layers. But we did it upside down as compared to now. Also, along the years, other cubers learned how to combine moves to solve multiple pieces at a time. Back then, all we had was books and each other. And unless you lived in a big city/area, you were pretty much stuck with books and trial and error. You were pretty much on your own. It's so much easier to learn now.
> It's so much easier to learn now.
Yet, so many people still don't try to learn! So I say kudos to everyone who has a good go at this fascinating hobby.
Great video! I can’t believe how much cubing has changed since the early 1980’s!
Really cool video
Tymon's explanation is so clear and I also learn from his walkthrough.
he casually predicts oll during ls and pll during oll
The first WR just like a 3 style bld but without blindfold.Imagine the first comp and the current speedcube they used.
“We’ll see you again in another 40 years.”
Inb4 TheCubicle doesn’t upload for 40 years.
10:08 the judge is quite enthusiastic
That’s super cool. I’ve never seen Minh Thai’s solve reconstructed.
Ooooo really interesting video!
Great to see how cubing has changed since the 1980s and how the solves have completely changed
Just incredible, remember when they came out in the 80th and we got hands on some solution paper and learned the moves by heart so we could solve it in around 2 minutes, but 4 seconds ? WTF, that’s from another planet. Amazing.
Looks like Damian is back to being a cubeologist 🤔
I know a cuber who spent too much time on cubing and has amazing inspection so he learnt
Advanced cfop
Roux
Both X crosses
Now at home he checks which one is better but at comp he sticks with advanced cfop
what is both xcroses
Really interesting video!
Tymon is god
perfect time to upload lmao. right as max breaks FOUR world records
Oh yeah
What cube is tymon using?
TengYun V1
Would have been great to feature Minh tai 😀
the most ergonomic alg for a rubiks brand
What the method used by Minh Thái called?
Damn, who knew Tymon was so good an efficiency?
New Cubicle mat?
What's the cube that leo used?
Wow
In the next 40 years Leo will do the host
Which cube is tymon using?
I'm actually not sure, might be the mgc v2
@@marcusyong4840 why would he use that
@@realTPerm I have no idea, lol
Tengyun v1
@@Aanai182 oh yes, thanks
why don't they have the same solutions if it's the same scramble?
they each solve in a different way.
bruh everyone have different solutions
M'attendais miss scranble
Minh Thái
OWO this is new
Is tymons cube the thing?
it's a tengyun v1
Thanks :) I just thought because the angstrom logo is on green it could be a cube called "the thing"
if matty inserted the 3rd pair normally he could have done a very easy zbls
First time i see Damian face
Hello
Leo sounds like Yoda
this just just ao there isn’t 69 comments
What they did E moves back then and a weird method
It was a form of Corners First Method.
People were experimenting with all kinds of methods back then and that happens to be the most popular one at that time.
@@thesphyrth yea that sounds logic. Interesting as hell!
hi
yo
Pog
hello cubic cuong nek
Wth was this method in 1984 lmao
So how do I get a gift card from the twitch live stream I was so confusdd
Hi
That's a lie man. They aren't doing no calculations. Like max park said, dont think, just solve.
:(
Max Park is a genius who doesn't do all the complex stuff Matty or Tymon is doing.
But they do plan stuff out on the fly. That's the power of Lookahead.
@@thesphyrth fair enough
why are you so damn hostile?
does Leo speaks Filipino?
Hes more fluent in Bisaya i think cause he is from Cebu
