      DXO PhotoLab 8 for photo editing, VMware Fusion Pro w/Windows 11 Pro, NetNewsWire RSS feeds aggregator, have had LM Studio and MFLUX, but cannot seem to justify local LLM and text to img with the free options available online.

      I just did it (thanks to you UA-cam guys😠🤣) I just could not wait for the Studio or Pro, you guys should get commissions from Apple😉 I just couldn't take it anymore, the crashes with my M1, painful scrolling through thousands of thumbnails and bogging down, Blender sucked. So after looking at the results of the Mini M4 pro, I upgraded mine to the 20 core GPU, and I went 64GB memory. Yeah Yeah, I could have easily done with 48 but here is the thing it was just an extra $180😁 to jump up to 64GB after my 10% discount. Memory has always been my nemesis and every single time I didn't go for higher memory I paid for it with frustration so $180 is not a worry even if it's overkill. This will be the biggest jump I ever made, M1 iMac to this? I can finally use Blender I'm going from a score of 261 to 2500!! The struggle is over! So yeah, it's a LOT, I think it's the best choice for now until the M5 Studio next fall.

      I have M4 Pro Mac mini with 14c CPU, 20c GPU, 64gb RAM, 2TB SSD.

    Evening David,
    Just received my M4 Pro, and it's beautiful.
    I opted for the extra ram (64GB), over the SSD (Only got the 512GB) but it is so quiet, and cool to the touch whilst running,
    I am glad I took the plunge as I was umming and ahhing for a couple of days. I added the 10GB ethernet and the 16 core Neural Engine, as I cannot see myself buying another compute for a few years, so hopefully I am future-proofed.
    Setup was a bit of a nightmare, it didn't recognise my blue mouse, then couldn't find my old Mac-mini, couldn't restore from Time-Machine and finally, I could not get past the log-in screen (which other users had issues with too)!
    All sorted now, and I am happy with my purchase, as you appear to be too!
    Best,
    Bill

    Hi David, thank you so much for this video!
    So much debate on the M4 and M4Pro in the Mini version; I think how much UM and/or Storage you need is purely based on your particular needs.
    That being said, I thought the same; “room to growth” is essential for me, so after a month of research and so many vids on UA-cam, I decided to go for the M4 Pro base model with a 10Gb Ethernet port. Looking for treating myself with a TB5 enclosure/storage or even a NAS next year.
    Subscribed! Cheers 💪🏼

      Thank you for the sub, Walter and I hope my video helped with your decision-making. A NAS is something I am spending a lot of time looking at myself. It was a record of local traffic and I can read the number plates of every car, neat. I only used the 50mm lens.

    • @darylcheshire1618
      @darylcheshire1618 25 днів тому +1

      @@DavidLewisTech there are trade-offs, the file size is large and the camera gets warm, but a firmware update reduced this. The M4 would be efficient in post processing the 8k file. The 4k is probably more practical, the experiment with the traffic impressed me that number plates could be read compared to dashcams which I think was 1080p.
      Funny, I paid $750 for a 250GB card for the R5 for movies but 250GB is regarded as an underwhealming option for the base model M4 mini.

    Dang! I've said it before and I'll say it again. I need to stop watching your videos (not really!). Your enthusiasm is infectious and I find myself yet again thinking I should replace my perfectly good 16" M1 Pro MBP because the M4 Pro MBP will be such an improvement. For me, I really DO want/need a Mac with a built-in screen because, unlike you, I'm not carrying it from one location with a monitor to another but rather moving it around the house to and from locations that don't have a monitor (think couch, kitchen table, recliner). So a Mac mini just won't cut it. But it's increasingly looking like you will have convinced me to pick up a new MBP after the start of the New Year.
    The only real decision is 16" or 14". I like the much lighter weight of the 14 inch but am concerned that I will miss the size of the 16 inch screen when I have two apps open side by side. Any thoughts on that?

    • @DavidLewisTech
      @DavidLewisTech  25 днів тому +1

      Go the full beans! Get the 16-inch. You'll miss that extra screen size, I reckon.
      As for the improvements from M1 - M4, I think you'll be stunned. Plus, as I mentioned, there is that imperceivable something that makes everything just seem snappier on the M4 silicon!

    I was frustrated by the instability of my PC specially after it went to sleep. This tiny Mac Mini caught my eye due to its size and it takes barely any space on my desk. There is no fan noise other than when I’m exporting a video, using apps is super smooth and fast, and I can now walk away from my desk and never have to worry about having to do a restart. The base model M4 Pro feels faster than my top spec PC except for video its on par but at more than half the price and it barely takes any space. For gaming Windows is still superior. Thanks, David - great video. My hesitation to go with the mm m4 pro is the growing use of AI in apps like Lightroom and especially Topaz AI. The GPU gets heavily used and as time goes on, I worry the m4 pro will get more easily maxed out. My 2017 iMac struggles with Topaz Gigapixel so I am leaning toward the config you got - or waiting for the m4 Studio which will have more gpu. Do you have any concerns in this regard? I’ve been pondering “cross- grading” from my M1Max Studio (base, 2Tb). I don’t see it as any real power upgrade, and I know the dual video encoders in the max still beat out the ones in the M4Pro, but I’m still temped for the portability, the newer graphics for 3d and a wee bit of gaming, and unashamedly the sheer cuteness. For ref I do short vids (2-10 mins) in Final Cut and quite a bit of AfterEffects. All the usual Adobe stuff too, but I know it can chew thro that. What do you think?

    • @DavidLewisTech
      @DavidLewisTech  25 днів тому

      Hi Bruce - another viewer has already switched from a Studio to a mini, which says it all! These minis are insane.
      Yup, they are as cute as hell but also brilliant to use. I was expecting more of an issue with only having a single video encoder, but in that stress test video I linked to, it shows that there were only about 60 seconds on a 12-minute 4K video. On shorter videos, honestly, you won't notice it.
      The portability is a huge win for me - I adore the mini, and it will eat through your workflow no problems.

It retails at $269 USD, and you can get it on sale for a little cheaper. It has 21 ports which is more than the ivanky and quite literally the same output. PS. Hi there - I don't think you'd need the Pro chip. If you watch the video I put a card up for at the end of this video, you'll see me using a standard M4 Mac mini.
      These things fly and for your needs will be more than adequate.
      I hope that helps.
      d 👍🏻

      Cool man - thanks for the sub 👍🏻
      I put the specs up on screen near the start of the video, but they are:
      M4 Pro (14/20 config)
      48GB memory
      1TB storage
      10GB Ethernet
      and it smokes! 👊🏻

    Just wondering if you have ever considered the EMF radiation environment in which you operate, particularly if use are using WiFi 6e. I am a subscriber btw, just waiting for the inevitable invite to Patreon, which I guess is understandable.

      Thanks for the sub - and as yet no Patreon PayWalls from me! The sub suits me fine!! 😄

    In 35 years of mac use in a professional design studio... I have never once touched a SD card. Photographers would supply images via zips, or MO. or CDs. DSL and cable became standard mid 90s, FTP. Using Fetch. then Transmit.

      @@DavidLewisTech Like anything else, its prob subjective. I started my design studio in 1989, we had 2 IIci's and 2 SE30s. Used QuarkXPress. newsletters, brochures, coupons, posters, whatever. My studio was asked to start a magazine (still printing 28 years later) and have been primarily doing magazine work ever since then.... including today. Over 500,000 pages? in several interests. Studio was largest about 20 years ago, 1998-2008. 2008 bubble broke us. 80% of my clients were in the home industry. I had 3 designers + 1 marketing person. I art directed and worked with dozens of photographers, illustrators, writers, etc (and no SD cards =). Our current largest client is a Luxury Real estate magazine. 9 cities across the USA, 54 mags a year. 30-40 GBs of images each issue. Not a SD car in sight. The number of macs Ive purchased and sold/free cycled since those IIcis is staggering. Not ot mention HDDs, zip diskz, jaz, MO, Orb, printers, switches, mice, etc, etc, etc (at least to me as a single purchaser). Not one PC ever. =) Close to retirement now... but still working those 50 books... thinking one last upgrade. Current 2020 27" iMacs to mini M4Pros with some screen... prob not the studio display... some other 5K screen that Im sure I will hate.

    Memory bandwidth is gigaBYTES (GB/s) per second, not gigabits (Gb) per second. And the ethernet is 10 gigabits/sec, not gigabytes. There are 8 bits in a byte. I don't know why they switch between the 2 units, but they do, and it seems to trip up tech UA-camrs all over the world.

    Do you think the 24GB of ram and 512 of SSD is good enough for recording music in logic pro and editing videos on DR and Final Cut? ill be using external SSDs. Just wasnt a higher option of ram on Best Buys web site :( Thats the part im most worried about.

    • @DavidLewisTech
      @DavidLewisTech  25 днів тому

      As you are using external SSD the 512Gb is fine.
      From my tests on the Mac mini (non-pro - watch the video I've put a card up for at the end) 24Gb will work, but if you can manage to go for 48GB - so much the better

    One thing I have to say...... Dongle, the definition, was originally based on software protection "DONGLES", like Emagic's protectection device, As was syncrosoft, Bias..... Hell , even a cartridge that you plugged into an atari to run Cubase V1,,,,
    Stop saying Docks / Expansions are dongles..... It really gets under my skin !
    Why... Because , a breakout box IS NOT A DONGLE
    (disclaimer... Watching this on a 5.1 Frankenstein..OSX11 , because it the last OS before Apple dropped SYS wide FW core audio support....)
