I usually make these with a style of game/boss in mind that I make up. boring part below: The design for this was that the music would stay the same until the next phase, where it switches from a modern art style to an old/retro type game. halfway through it changes to a mix of both and I think that's where the bass triangle wave kicks in. Of course, I never really MAKE the levels, it's just fun to envision.

You can see those little "steps" in the triangle wave, thats why some people may say that the triangle is stepped. Because of that, there are harmonics. Harmonics are waves that are "embedded" in the triangle. The more steps, the higher the pitch of those waves. The triangle from beepbox has 16 steps, so the noise is relatively high pitched. "Perfect" triangles also have steps but so many that you don't hear them.
