  • Babybe transmits the touch of a mother to her premature baby in real time, simulating her heartbeat and breathing for the infant while still inside an incubator. The team behind this device presented their prototype for the Intel Make It Wearable Challenge on November 3, 2014 in San Francisco. I think this is fantastic. I had a son born at 28 weeks gestation and any/every opportunity to embrace wether physically or in this case digitally/electronically should be welcomed. I now have a thriving three year old who doesn't know the hardships in which he started life however myself and my wife will never forget. Great idea, well done sir.

Obviously I can't remember what happened when I was born, but as a prematurely born myself I would like to see similar people get benefit. About the replay feature I also wonder whether this will enter consumer market as well, since I see a similar use at home.

Although important, I don't know how many people will need this. Its important for those it helps, but i don't think that will be a majority of people.

+TheLurkingPanda There are many many premature born babies delivered each day, it is not only those born early, but any in NICU like babies born with Jaundice and so forth. Plus there are times when the mother does not survive due to an aneurysm or something like that so this helps fathers or nurses who attend to the babies can help them by letting them feel comforted even when they are unable to hold them.

what if you drop the product at 1:23 ? does the baby feel it??

Great idea but, What proof do you have to support your statement that: "it helps the baby get better". Also, the baby isn't sick just prematurely born therefore simply needs time and lots of nutritions :) There is no scientific proof that your product will benefit the babies development and health care :/

It's not only about the baby, it's about the family as a whole. Imagine the pain of the mother being separated from her baby for so long, without being able to hold or even touch him/her. If it helps to get better results long term, that would be awesome.

Jose Díaz All babies respond to the sound of their mothers' hearts. This is seen often when a fussy child immediately calms down upon being put on its mother's chest.
There have been double-blind studies that show that there is a marked difference between their response to their mom's heartbeat and that of a stranger. Both help but the response to mom is quicker.
This took all of about 10 seconds to find:
"Placing the baby directly on the mother's chest where it can hear mom's heartbeat calms the baby," she adds. "Skin-to-skin contact also helps the baby adapt to a new environment outside the womb where it has to adjust to the temperature of the air and breathing. Newborns have a natural crawling reflex, and usually within the first hour of skin-to-skin contact with the mother, they can orient themselves to the mother's breast and 'latch on' to begin nursing, taking in the colostrum that is the mother's first milk for the baby."
Hunt notes that several objective scientific studies have shown that early (chest born) skin-to-skin contact helps stabilize the newborn's temperature, blood pressure, heart rate, blood-sugar level and breathing.

I found as well numerous other studies presently ongoing that are investigating adding the sound of mothers' voices, heartbeat, and respiration.
