Thank you very much for your comment. Yes, I imagine it’s fairly cold where you are compared to other places. What you can plant is very dependent on local conditions. As you can see in the video, there are some things we can plant here in the UK now but the main growing season doesn’t really gain any pace until the end March onwards. Kind regards. Gary
It's pretty snowy here in Denver. End of January. I started cold crops in the window: kale, lettuce, broccoli. They're loving it! I started my flowers in winter sowing empty water gallons. They sit outside, waiting to germinate when they're ready. I scattered a ground cover of rye, but I noticed the chickens over there in the snow, so they may have eaten my seeds. Lol. I've been planting out a few onions whenever the snow melts. Just the ends of the ones we ate and grew the roots back. The ground is pretty frozen, but they're so small, it's not hard to dig a little place. I just have to feel like I'm doing something!
I live in Zone 5 so it's very cold right now, but I have an indoor greenhouse with grow lights. I started the walla Walla onions on January 22nd. They are doing awesome. I also have two aerogardens in my house going with tomatoes and lettuce growing in them. I also started garlic in my raised bed in October so they will be ready in June or July.
It’s quite cold here at the moment too. I’m in Zone 8a in the UK. It looks like you’ve made a really good start and in fact you are growing all of the things I am also growing at the moment apart from tomatoes which I will sow later this month. Keep up the good work! Kind regards. Gary

I totally agree. Your comment has given me idea what to start growing. I’ll have to buy an outside thermometer.I don’t have a greenhose or P shed soi realised we’ll be limited but we will try.
I have garlic in on the allotment and I have under my grow lights leeks onions and sweet peppers, one other thing that I'm going to start soon is some potatoes these will go into pots and be kept in the greenhouse until the weather is better then they will go outside.

Thx for the interesting content! I live in basically the same zone as you are. I am still harvesting carrots, leaks and beetroot planted last summer. In late October I planted garlic and several types of onions as well as spinach and corn salad. I have some containers very close to the southern wall of my house where I planted kohlrabi back in late summer which already have grown to the size of tennis balls. Currently I am preparing tomatoes and peppers and following your advice I will give cauliflower a shot.

Growing zones are much more widely used and referred to in the USA because it is such a large country, however in the UK most parts are in zone 8 or 9. I start celeriac, peppers tomatoes in January, in my South facing conservatory using grow lights overnight, a propagator to start them off and keep the temperature above 7 degrees C but preferably 10 degrees. I do not let the temperature get too hot or the plants will become leggy even with grow lights, I am not after fast growth till a few months later. Celeriac are very slow until you prick them out. Also onions as per your suggestion.

Yes, if you have grow lights and a propagator you can create controlled conditions that will allow you to grow most things throughout the year. I have a propagator which I will start to use again at the end of January. Your point about temperature is a good one for others that watch my videos in that you need to be aware of the right temperatures to ensure that plants germinate and grow but then are not allowed to bolt if the temperature is too high because as you say they will become leggy. I write our allotment newsletter, one of the articles I wrote was how to grow celeriac, from personal experience it is a little harder than most crops to grow. I always say start early, plant out mid May, cover against celery fly. Then feed regularly and water well. If you want a copy then I would be happy to send you a copy. I saved a load of onion seed last year and will be sowing a couple of trays this week. I much prefer growing onion from seed, even though they are a bit more tricky to plant, they do keep much better and shouldn’t go to seed like sets tend to (being in their second year of growth).

Being a tad further north (Cumbria), the only outdoor planting or sowing I've done in January are garlic & broad beans. First week of Feb & I'll be multisowing onions, turnip & beetroot in cell trays ( I grow in "no dig" deep beds), plus starting off my Sungold & Shirley tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower & (a gamble...) the first of my summer bedding.

Thank you very much for your comment. Spring onions are generally ok through the frost and colder temperatures and it’s always nice to have a really early crop in late winter/early spring. I’ve got a variety called Ramrod that are growing nicely outside. Give them a try if you’ve never grown them before. Kind regards. Gary
I have a grow light and heat mat set up that I did last year, however I got over excited and went mad sowing thing, which then had to sit in pots for far too long, due to the cold spring. This year I will be starting Peppers/Chillies and Aubergines in January and possibly some brassicas to use the leaves and some spring onions, to go in the GH beds for an early crop.
Thank you for the response Rusty. You raise a very interesting and important point which I touched on in the video in relation to the temptation to plant too much too soon. In the past I've done exactly the same. It is pointless sowing seeds too early where the outside temperature might not be ready for planting on and young plants/seedlings are sat inside too long. I've therefore tried a more measured approach over recent years to sow at the right time and resist the temptation to sow too much too soon. I suppose that is why there are only 8 suggestions in the video. As the year progresses and the temperature increases it is possible to grow much more. Do you not mulch the ground ? ( straw for example ) to protect from frost /weed suppressant/water retention . Its the permaculture method. Thanks for the upload.

Depends on conditions and space. In addition I have leeks & spring onions started, with peppers, chilli, & basil to stay indoors under lights. Don't forget good old mustard & cress on the windowsill and sprouting seeds like alfalfa or a mix sold for sprouting.

Be warned, protect from slugs, snails and birds and mice. Birds sometimes dig out early seeds looking for worms and other edibles. While mice eat the seeds underground leaving a dieing green stalk.

This year I’ve bought garlic from a local market trader who is an established seed plant trader. These are Solent Wight which are a popular variety and they are already growing very well. Yes, you can plant spring onions but at this time of year I will start mine in seed cells/trays indoors and when the weather is a little more agreeable I will plant them outside. All types of onions and spring onions are fairly good in cold temperatures so if you have free draining soil and it is frost free you could plant the seeds outside, although I normally wait until at least March before thinking about sowing spring onion seeds directly outside. You could do some winter sowing! I'm trying it this year because I always get the planting itch early in January, but our last frost isn't usually until May.

Do you buy garlic bulbs from the supermarket and plant them or are there bulbs you buy specific for growing?
Thank you for the message. Last year I planted supermarket bought garlic and it grew ok but the bulbs were a little small. This year I’ve bought garlic from a local market trader who is an established seed plant trader. These are Solent Wight which are a popular variety and they are already growing very well. Can you plant spring onions?
Thank for the comment. Yes, you can plant spring onions but at this time of year I will start mine in seed cells/trays indoors and when the weather is a little more agreeable I will plant them outside. All types of onions and spring onions are fairly good in cold temperatures so if you have free draining soil and it is frost free you could plant the seeds outside, although I normally wait until at least March before thinking about sowing spring onion seeds directly outside. Remember, if onions get frosted they usually bolt to flower rather than form a usable bulb.

Broad beans don't need such a spacing. 9" is plenty unless you've got a farm. That's only my experience.

Yeah not going to happen…. Why 🤔 there is 1’ of snow that has stayed around for the last month it won’t be gone for another month or 2. I live in USA northern Pennsylvania. I will stick with what the Zone maps say thanks though ✌️

You could do some winter sowing! I'm trying it this year because I always get the planting itch early in January, but our last frost isn't usually until May.
If the ground isn't frozen, it isn't winter. Or if it is winter and your ground isn't frozen...that's not very wintry.
