  • In this video I demonstrate unsupported French sewing, also known as link sewing. This sewing style is useful for thin and small books.

    Thanks.. its a wonderful job
    I previously thought I need some equipment to hold up larger threads on the spine, but this method is super simple
    Definitely gonna try this
    Thanks

    Hi, Darryn. I'm from Brazil and your channel and videos are incredible. I'm learning so much with your detailed explanations! I'm gratefull for that!! A question here. I'm working in a sketchbook. It will be 30 cm height. I've already watched this video about french sewing and the other about sewn board binding were you use french sewing, but I'm in doubt about the holes that I need when I have this height. The sewing is in the same way? The same number of holes and same distance from borders of paper? Thank's for your help!

      For 30cm you might use 3 or 4 equally spaced linking locations. The space between the linking holes stays the same. Good luck! DAS

    Having used French link for exposed sewing books (e.g. hybrid coptic bindings) over decorative tapes/ribbons I tried it for some square-back cased books. I find it particularly difficult to get the tension right without tapes, and the inner stitches always seem too slack. So my trick is to use a sliver of heavy card or even some stiff bookcloth. This allows me to get the tension just right during sewing and when the tapes are removed there's enough slack in the sewing for a perfect lay-flat finish. Of course sewing without tapes can cause the block to skew from head to tail, and my experience is that a little more attention needs to be paid to knocking up/bracing before glueing - and packing out the spaces with Japanese paper or crepe is helpful in levelling out the spine since the French link sits prouder than regular running stitching.

    Thanks this was a nice clear demo, just right for a beginner such as myself to follow.

    Can French binding be applied to set of 500 pages of comic book having a glossy page? I would like to bind them as a hardbound book for my personal collection.

    8:53 Is putting the knot inside the section rather than on the spine a choice or did that just happen to be where the splicing of the thread needed to happen?

    • @DASBookbinding
      @DASBookbinding  10 місяців тому

      A choice. I don't want the knot interfering with the linking of the sewing.

      I con't find the original files which would tell me, but it's all Bach, and I think I hear one of the English Suites in there. It's all by the guitarist Jon Sayles if you'd like to google him. He has put a heap of his music online for everyone to listen to and use. All the best, Darryn

    is it possible to
    round and back this french binding?

    • @DASBookbinding
      @DASBookbinding  3 роки тому +2

      Yes, but don;t make the sewing too tight. Just like over tight kettle stitches make rounding and backing difficult, the link stitch can stop the stretching of the spine needed for this operation. Good luck! DAS

    What kind of biding would you recommend for 300 pages books?

    • @DASBookbinding
      @DASBookbinding  4 роки тому +2

      Such a complex question! Do you mean 300 leaves, or 300 pages, with one page per side of a leaf and thus 150 leaves? Assuming you mean 300 pages, which is 150 leaves, that is a good thickness to round and back. With 4 sheets sections (16 pages per section) you would need 19 sections/signatures. There are so many options and depends on experience level, but I think I'd recommend the project I'm working on now, the rounded and backed Bradel binding. I can teach a beginner to make this book (I hope) but it is a very high quality product. It does require backing. Hope this helps! Darryn

      @@DASBookbinding @DAS Bookbinding I just watched the Rounded and backed video an that's exactly what i need since you are binding a book to!. Thank you much! If i'm not wrong, your book in that video has about 42 A4 sheets, so that means the book per se it's about 170 pages. Well, when i say 300 pages i mean it in the same way your book has 170 pages.
