Installing A Garage Door Part 4- Tensioning the EZ- Set Torsion Spring

  • This is an informational video only, for a comprehensive guide consult the owners manual, however I go over some key steps from start to finish.
    THE ROLLERS WERE INSTALLED IN THE WRONG SPOTS IN THIS VIDEO, THEY HAVE BEEN CORRECTED. ALL IS WELL NOW.
    In the last portion of the garage door odyssey we set tension on the garage door torsion springs via the EZ-set torsion spring winder which this door was equipped with.
    Please note this is a 9x7 door, if it was a 16x7 foor door there would be two torsion springs and you would have to tighten each side gradually to keep them in sync.

    I was having a trouble getting the end bearing support seated into the bracket and this video was helpful. I like his just average Joe approach to the video.

    Thank you for the video Joe, you did a good explaining how to use the EZ-Set units. I had never seen them before my neighbor got them & i'm installing them for him. This verified what I thought was the correct way to do it.

    Very informative video. Nicely done. I have installed three EZset systems at my home 14 years ago, myself. They are all on Ideal,16x7 insulated Four Star metal doors with "Sunrise" windows across the top panel. Each door has well over 6000 cycles. One about double that. They have all worked flawlessly. Never a single problem. I highly recommend them. I would also recommend using nylon wheels in place of metal ones if the garage is attached to your home. They're a lot quieter.

    yeah i would definitely recommend that your hinges have slotted screwholes, makes the entire process easier.

    my advise to your install is the hinges require that the slotted screwholes are on top and the rollers are to be installed in the hole furthest away from the door. if the rollers are not in the right holes the door face will not make proper contact to the jamb and the woodstop or weatherstrip will not be affective in keeping out drafts. also the spring will look swirly like a slinky when you have too much space between the coils when fully wound so your prestretch is too much, a little stretch will not look funky just my two cents.

    I will indeed post here when I have the first problem, the north garage door gets used 99% of the time so the south door has been cycled maybe 30 times since new. We will see what gets it first, age or cycling. Thanks for the input!

    the noise can come from bad installation of side channels causing squeaking or on lintel contact with curtain the lubricate rollers at metal spindle side not on channel because that will cause collection debris the check axel fixing part thanks for sharing

    @templetext 12 років тому +1

    Uhm, Joe, your rollers are in the hinged part of the hinge, and not in the roller holder part of the hinge. You need to move them to get proper offsets.

    I don't doubt it the door come crashing down and crushed the roof of my car after 8 months in service......... just kidding. I have heard many stories about the EZ tension spring system being problematic. Mine has been in service for nearly 2 years and hasn't lost tension yet. The door is operated a minimum or 3 cycles a day sometime as many as 8. I figure its got 4300 cycles on it and so far everything is still works fine.
    I dont doubt your information. The plastic stuff seems cheap.

    I've noticed it's a crapshoot but most of my service comes in the winter months. I've had some that make it just a couple years and a few that have made it to 7-9 years. At least these are more serviceable than say a wayne dalton torquemaster. I don't service the TM at all and only do springs/cables on the EZ series. I usually recommend REAL nylon rollers at that point to just so I don't have to come back for years. Clopay has decent sections in the high end doors but still terrible hardware.

  • @JoeSchlubb
    @JoeSchlubb  11 років тому

    Yes I sure do miss the extra light. Overall I like these doors better because they hold some heat in whereas the filumas did not. If I lived in a moderate climate I would have went back with filumas most likely.

    9:06 3M silicone paste is great for the retainers and everything else. 😀The paste doesn't run/drip unlike silicone spray.😑

    The #2 and #3 hinges are upside down and like what was mentioned before the roller is in the wrong hole.

    I -think- they were 275?? a piece. They were the cheapest insulated doors that menards carries, and they were on sale. I don't remember for sure.

    My torsion springs are extremely tight during my rewind. Are my springs in their relaxed state? What do I need to do to correct this if so? VERY FRUSTRATED !

  • @pheasanthunter122
    @pheasanthunter122 12 років тому

    Rollers are in the wrong hole (crucial for door breaking away from the jamb and following the pitch of vertical track). Horizontal angle is upside down (not a big issue). Cables should have been tightened and shaftline clamped off before the spring was wound (you are lucky that the door goes up evenly). Should have a strut on the top section for operator (an operator will crease the top section over time). However thank you for sharing your door installation with us.

    How's everything going now? Do you still use those older 2 garage door openers? Or are they in the trash now?

  • @chance6298

    That squeaking, is in part the plastic "reatainer".
    But the reason is because is the torsion spring itself is too far stretched out...

      Mark Mathews will having the spring stretched to far cause the fingers in the easy winders fingers to come out

    Check your door first, don't just go cranking the force adjustments. Disconnect it from the operator and run it by hand. It should move smooth and freely and stay open at the halfway point. Hopefully your door isn't as loud as these things. Glad I don't install these debacles

    Your counting the starting point you fool, that was one turn. Also a simple vice grip would have pinned the door down plenty enough
    That was a rough watch overall lol
    that door wouldn't fall no matter how little spring tension you had on it LMAO it runs like a bag of shit. Did you install that too?
