In badminton doubles, the serve is the most important part of the rally. Specifically you should be using a backhand low serve to fight for the first chance to attack. A bad serve will always be punished, and you can easily lose the point off it.
I literally just played a game of badminton this week after not having played for over 5 years and I swear your videos are more helpful to me than any coaching I received in high school.
Depends on the height of the guy in this video)
Bro not listening to his coach and then blaming it on them
@@bigmoniesponge lol
Isn't he holding the shuttle too high when he's serving?
Kept doing this today. Suck at doubles, but kill it in singles. The badminton gods knew i needed this video.
exactly.. :)
Me too

Same here ...i can easily handle singles but when it comes to doubles i always look lost to the point that my partners wonder if i know how to play Badminton 🤦♂😁😂

Good luck bro.
Me too, have destroyed the half.. need to defeat the others..
Great help for amateurs like me. I play badminton at the local badminton club and more often than not my opponents returned my serve with a nasty smash or I ended up landing inches short. Obviously, I was doing it all wrong. But not anymore. Just took me two days to practice it and now I am good. Thanks for this tutorial!
wow that is quick how long did it take for you to practice your serves?
Great tips, Jonathan! Thanks a lot. I've played for 18 years, and one of the more, ahem, consistent problems I've had is with my short serve.
MR whats your height???
every time i serve in doubles i get smashed on the face
This really helped thank u so much serve was the weakest part of my game!!

same here i have p.e finals in two months and i’m so bad at serving

Great tips, I’ve been serving reasonably good backhands for years but these tips have improved my consistency and accuracy. One curious point though, all the serves you demonstrated would be classed as ‘ illegal ‘ due to the height of contact ( too high ) 🤷🏼♂️
What happens if you hop up standing on your toes, will that make the serve easier and legal ?
Nope, the max height is 1.15m he is bellow I think.
Some commentators have mentioned this serve is a bit borderline in terms of height, and looking back I agree. I was focused on demonstrating the perfect shuttle path on camera, I ended up serving a bit higher than normal. I don't think you'd get called on a service fault in general play, but of course adjust as necessary!
Hi, I like your videos but I agree with the other commentators. You are quite tall and serving at armpit level. Even under the old serve rules it would be high. I hope you clarify this properly as it may give beginners the wrong idea.
csk1 yep.. right on point. The purpose of the video was to show : How to low serve without getting your head smashed if its a poor serve 😁..
But some people as I can see were quick to point out the Height issue.
My suggestion .. please re edit the video and add a Text line stating the same.
Anyway. Nice video. Audio was clear.
Great work. 👏👏👏👌👍
Can't seem to find your email anywhere, could you write it down here or send it to me at my email, anglewis2002@gmail.com
Good on you for adressing it
Unfortunately true, the entire shuttle has to be under the lowest rib of your chest. In order to meet that angle of the arm must be more steep like 45 degrees, varies per person of course.
Love your channel! I’m an intermediate player and these little tips in your videos help out heaps
That realization when you play too much badminton and you notice that your other arm is much more muscular than the other
Edit: I am a girl not a boy😳
Xhymonette Navarro bro my right arm is like jacked up and my left is so bony and weak 😱😂😂
Is it just badminton ;)

I’m in a P.E. Tournament right now and I’m back by 5 points while my opponent needs one more so i gotta hope this works.

Great video man, I'm struggling with my serves. Hopefully I can practice this serve within the days left before my tournament! Thanks!
most helpful video for an intermediate-to-advanced level players. serves make up significant part of the game and it has to be consistent, accurate and controlled. practicing alone is one thing but repeating it under pressure is a different thing - it requires the mental strength.
Oh my god!! This works!! Remember to breathe and stay calm, hold the handle on the top and hit the birdie above the sweet spot using wrist power. Simple!!! Thanks buddy!!
I saw your video and went to the badminton club right away, HUGE DIFFERENCE! My services became a nightmare for other players. I even made like 10 successive points just from my services. Please note that before this video, my services were not worth 2 cents (lot of failure), i had no confidence. I even won in a double Vs the trainer. More over once you get this point you will get a lot of confidence and you will be able to focus on the other aspects of the game to improve yourself. Thank you so much, the video is well done. Big thumb up.
Thanks for sharing I was able to improve my serving techniques by watching these videos.
I thought the service should be below the waist.
i am an advanced club player and also do videos myself and you channel is one of my big motivations making own videos for mine .. your way of explaining is awsome and engaging. i learn s lot from your videos to put it into my mine to give everyone the best experience
Great video! My game has immediately improved from catastrophic to awful. Thanks! 😁👍
Absolutely amazing video, has guided me so well, put it into practice and my serve has improved massively. Thank you
Thank you Jonathan for this simple and effective explanation.
Can you make a video on the flick serve the next time?
Trinitos agreed
Thank you so much for doing it it improve my service skills
The intro and the gif in the video are just so funny and perfect😂👍🏻.....jokes apart..this is a great video....🙌🏻💯
I’m returning back to badminton after 16 years. Regular viewer of the channel now.

Excellent video with sound advice for improving the backhand low serve. Was your serve borderline... maybe, but all professional players will push the laws governing the serve to their limit (just see how frequently pro players are picked up for an unlawful high serving action). Two critical badminton laws that might have been worth mentioning are that the racket head must be at a 'discernible downward angle to the racket handle' and that the first forward movement of the racket head toward the shuttle is deemed to be the start of the serving action and that the laws of badminton require the serving action to be a single, unbroken movement. As such it is technically possible to fault a player for moving their racket backwards and forwards toward the shuttle prior to hitting the shuttle. This is why you will see some players hold the shuttle behind their back until they are completely set up to serve.
Thanks for adding your comment and providing the laws regarding a legal serve. You were being rather generous in saying his serve was borderline. If you pause the video, there are several times when he makes contact with the shuttle to serve and the contact is clearly too high. Unfortunate.
@@davidh4557 I agree, a professional, world class player should be pulled for that serve. Generally, at a lower standard, the question I ask myself when umpiring is - Does this player gain an clear advantage from this serve? If the answer is "yes" then it should be faulted, if the answer is "no discernable benefit" then I might let it pass for the sake of not "breaking" the game.
1. Wrist movement
2. Grip at cone
3. Push from the top of the racquet head
4. Eyes on net cord
5. Stand as front as possible
Thanks

Great video, thanks Jonathan. I had never thought of hitting away from the sweetspot!
I tried this last week after watching your video through once. Spent half a game serving normally and then swapped to this serve half way through and won 7 serves back to back. You are a god
Thank you so much I would love to play but I could never do serve but I learned it in seconds by watching this video. Thank you so much❤
Excellent video and sound tips. Anyone else noticed the serve height to be too high for current 1.15m? And not following up the swing after serve?
Thank you so much I won my doubles tournament because of u ❤❤❤❤❤
Nice! 👌
Hi there, this video was very useful to learn the backend service. One thing I came to know that you missed talking is1.25 Meter height rule , “the whole of the shuttle shall be below 1.15 metres from the surface of the court at the instant of being hit by the server's racket”.
An interesting topic I think you could do for a video could be starting a discussion on rowdy behavior in pro badminton and the line between being passionate/psyching the opponent and being rude or belligerent?
Many years ago, I taught a friend the backhand low serve by asking him to do exactly what you said in the video, which is the move his grip up the handle to the cone.
Great video Jonathan
why is forehand low serve wrong>?
Isn’t too high to serve.? 😳🧐
115cm is rule, the net is 155cm high, and he serve at the midle of hit. The net itself is 75cm high, so if you serve at the midle height of it, you serve at 155-(75/2)= 117.5cm. A bit high. but not much, so with the angle of camera, it wasn't possible to be precise, but he is around the limit max. Not so high. :) Just 5cm too high, I think it was because he focused on the move more.
@@fabricevalleix5377 doesn't a serve have to be from waist height?
Max Fuller I think the rules have changed

Thanks very much Jonathan, so much help. Can you make a video about mixed doubles rotations? And how is the guy supposed to receive the serv?
Thanks very much

The best badminton lesson I ever had!!! ABSOLUTELY GENIUS
His serve looks quite high. Is it legal?
Illegal actually
This makes so much sense, thank you for pointing out those principles of being simple and predictable and not using the normal techniques that involve power.

I've profited 104 thousand dollars in last twelve months by doing an on-line job from home and I manage to earn that much by working part time for 3 or sometimes more h /daily. I’m using work opportunity I stumbled upon online and I am thrilled that i was able to make so much money. It's very user friendly and I'm so thankful that I found out about it. Here is what i do... *internationalproject49.com*
Used this method 3 years ago I didn't win but we played a great match
but you should serve down your waist right? and you serving to your chest please reply
Ok so. He’s going by the 150cm rule. He’s pretty short.
But yeah, if you’re average height it’s normally bottom rib height to serve.
If you are a female, which means you’re average height will be shorter, I’d recommend 1.5m rule.
Damn... It was immediately effective.... Drastically improved my game... Thanks a lot for making this video
Can't we do fore hand low serve ,is it a foul or not
Hi! Just wondering, can you serve with the racket at chest level? Shouldn't it be coming from below the waist? I'm new at this so I'm not sure. Thanks! :)
His service is a fault serve. You must hit below your waist, and he’s hitting at chest level. 😅
sprry, aren't you serving above ur waist level, a rule of thumb to identify a high serve?
But if you move the grip up the handle of the racquet, how are you going to switch your grip after you done your serve?
Can someone clarify for me the height limit for serving (singles and doubles, if they differ) as I get varying heights (main one being - bottom part of the rib (so the lowest point on the side which would be about the same height as your belly button region). Is this correct or is it actually higher?
thanks in advance!
This has not stopped from showing in my recommendations for the past week. Are you satisfied now, UA-cam?
Hahah, gotta love the youtube algorithm
Shouldn't serves be below 1.15 meters?
yes
I've been playing Badminton on and off. I hope this year I will be able to play consistently. Its a good healthy activitiy for individuals or with families.
Perfect visual demonstrations with clean pointers! I would really like to see your strategic approach towards singles games, as in where you decide to hit the shuttle in different commom circumstances. If its already made, I'll have to check it out.
Cheers ^.^
Boy this is incredible! I would donate if I had the money, cause the quality, and the technique, and the calm you explain everything is outstanding, congratulations, I'm subbing with my 4 accounts 🏸💥

Great tips! Will try it next time
Can you do video on how to receive this low serve without lift it high? Like a continuation of this video..
will do!
React quick, try to put it in the 'divorce' area. Similarly to how he was leaning forwards, you are allowed to do the same when recieving a serve
It feels like you are teaching everyone a basic physics but good dude i appreciate your explanation
the height the shuttle ur serving is high than ur last rib.so its going to be fault in real time matches. secondly due to new service rules that service below 1.15 m its absolutely fault serve.hope you understand and change your service from .
thats funny, i noticed this too!!! and he says he teachs badminton -_-
Excellent video! It's the same information I provide to the athletes I coach. The only thing I do differently is that I personally hold the cork when I serve. I always have. Always will. I tell my athletes to hold the shuttle however they wish so long as they stick with it and don't change. My serve is one of my best weapons and I legitimately don't have to drop or toss the shuttle. It gets hit out of my hand very easily. By no means am I saying you're wrong and I'm right. I'm just pointing out that holding the cork isn't necessarily improper.
Love you from 🇮🇳 India ❤️❤️❤️😘🥰

An excellent coaching session, your techniques have been adopted and is proving very successful. Thank You
Aren’t your hands illegally high at the point of serving?
I think so too. If he were in a real match, it would have been fault.
Yes it's not a legal serve
This is exactly the point, where I stopped watching the video
its a recent rule bro this was from 6 years ago
Yes your correct the rule is that the serve should be below waist height or 1.15m
I literally saw this guy's video after 5 years on my feed

Also me: WHAT?!😱
Thank you so much. Your technique (esp. the holding method) helped me get my serve better. So glad I found this!
The contact point is way above the waist, illegal serve!
He is also not doing one continuous motion in the serve.
Rule change 👍
Its not its from 115cm look at the rules
@@urnothing_2084 Shuttlecock is to be held below 115cm from floor at moment of release from 1st March 2018. It does appear that he is holding it above 115 as he's not far below the 155cm net height but that could be a visual trick and he could be a shorty. (Rationality tells me that a badminton coach knows how to serve legally.) When the new law was announced some of the gun players complained and ridiculed the rule.
What is the easiest serve to use for someone who's just playing socially to learn quickly during play? I don't want to get smashed like that, but I don't really need to practice so much :) The goal is play and have fun, so preferably something that leads to longer rallies
If your opponent isn't good at smashing then you can do a forehand serve
now how do i convert this into the flick serve? I can never seem to generate enough power from the same grip and position as my low serves
True. Please make a video for a flick serve that looks like a low serve
Flik serve is banned.. Cos the tossing of shuttle doesnt happen in that
Great video. Wish I. Had this video 20 years ago when I played doubles in high school.
I always though that the racket head couldn’t be above your waist? You are holding the racer mid chest once you stretch your arms forward.

Because of your serve I have master this thank you.

...My shuttle doesn’t have feathers...
...Thinks for a while...
...I don’t even have one...
This video helped me in a great level to serve better! Thanks and keep more videos coming!
serve is the ONLY shot we can control. In the aspect of a game, missing serves becomes a big deal. You may as well forfeit the game if you can't serve.
You have a point. But serve in badminton doesn't affect the game as much as the serve in other sports, say tennis or volley ball. It's important but i wouldn't say "forfeit the game". We could still have some fun even when we don't know how to serve properly.
Anang Sulistyono you’re talking about having fun and if you don’t care as much, you can allow to miss. I was referring for players who compete, and that quality serve matters too, at certain level, advanced receivers can rush or fake your return serves.
@@tayonguyen Players who compete doesn't need to watch this video. They already know how to serve.
Anang Sulistyono you’d be surprised, all levels can compete, even the elite make unforced errors on serves when under pressure . Serves may look easy and silly but can’t be taken for granted. Since badminton became a 21 pts system, all unforced errors is a giveaway pts, including missing a serve. There’s no more “2nd serve” to account the service mistakes like we had with 15pts system. So i kinda disagree with your statement “serve in badminton doesn’t affect as much”
tayonguyen his point is "its important but i wouldnt say "forfeit the game"". Why on earth compete players watch this video, even kevin sanjaya said, every players know how to flick serve. lol
Hi, could you also please teach us the angle of the shuttle when holding by the feathers.

Wait, you cant do a forehand low serve? Why tho?😅
Magna M.St. more time in the air and easier to attack.
Plus the shuttle would still drop a little, so randomisation in your serve can happen
Ztormrageheero Oh, Thanks! 😅 For a moment I thought there was actually a bwf rule against it!😅
Magna M.St. Not a problem. There is one particular player I play against in my club and he always does a forehand serve and the shuttle falls atleast 8cm from his hand to the racquet. Don't be like him :)
It is not a rule to not do a forehand low serve. I saw national players serve like that before in doubles
