i think drain you was decided to keep the roots simple with no bass flair because it was a lyric driven song with a breakdown. and breakdowns usually require a ground support (being bass or drums/both). thats what i love about nirvana, is they knew to not get too crazy when not needed, but also you can tell they allowed krist to go HAM on other songs like on a plain and lounge act.
you can tell he's been playing for a long time just by the way he plays. he looks very comfortable with the bass
