I first heard this hymn during the Queen's memorial service and have really enjoyed it every time I've listened. Such a moving way of remembering those who served, amongst many other hymns. Seeing The Queen here melts my heart, she lead rememberence every year she physically could, and will forever be loved. ❤
This, my favorite evening hymn, is one of almost countless examples of the great power, yet also the sweet and gentle gracefulness, of so many Anglican hymns. I first heard it, and fell hopelessly in love with it instantly, on my second visit to Great Britain, in 1972. Since then, I've been privileged to have attended numerous choral evensong services in my home city of Houston, Texas, USA, where it has been sung as the final hymn. I often find myself so overwhelmed by its beauty that singing along becomes physically impossible for me. I've left instructions for it to be sung at my memorial service, after my life's "day" has closed.
Mr. Bevil--I cannot say any more than what you have said!!! It, too, is one of my most favorite hymns--and it has just been added to the order of worship for my memorial service!
It is being sung at my Mum's funeral service this Thursday 23rd June 2022. I too will struggle to sing as I know I will break down and cry. She was 85 and a wonderful lady. Goodnight God Bless Mum. Love you.
+Milksplooge ...June 1997 At Midnight HKT By Confidential Teletype to the FCO and Government: I HAVE RELINQUISHED ADMINISTRATION OF THE COLONY OF HONG KONG. GOD SAVE THE QUEEN. /PATTEN. I rather well know Gov now Lord Patten would have liked to have added "God Save Us All... and forgive us this..." At Last Post at Government House as the Colonial HK flag was lowered, he was seen with tears, face ruddy. At Tamar in a huge public gathering before the Prince and new PM, he gave an excellent short speech outlining the flight path for HK, the guarantees China and the UK had made for basic human rights and eventual democracy. For his six years he was positively Churchillian in fighting to further guarantee these basic rights for Hong Kongers. As he sat, the orchestra struck Elgar's Nimrod as if to emphasise the pathos of it all, and Patten again lowered his head, his face deeply ruddy, and he had tears. We were seated only slightly above and about ten feet away. With Nimrod still playing, my wife realised I too was in tears in the rain, touching my arm to ask if I was alright. All I could choke out was "we have just sent six million brilliant people who see themselves as British into the blackest slavery. Nothing will be alright after this." Well, as we used to close, God Protect Hong Kong! God Save the Queen! /Hugh FRCS
This has always been a favorite of mine. The most memorable performance was at the Sewanee Church Music Conference in Tennessee where Gerre Hancock was organist for Evensong and I was part of the choir. When he played an interlude before the last verse I was so overcome with emottion that no words would come out when I tried to sing the last verse. Every time I play this hymn now I think of that performance.
Empires rise and fall, it's the nature of the beast. And yet here we are, communicating in English, with a culture deeply invested in the work of English writers, philosophers and scientists across the ages. The deep effects of the British Empire will be with us for a few centuries yet.
Wow, what a great selection of hymns for closing this service : The Day Thou Gavest followed by Lead Kindly Light with the last post. So touching and moving.
England need to be reclaim for our Lord Jesus Christ, let the English people be awaken spiritually and return to righteousness and holiness. The word England in Chinese means 'heroic nation.' Only by being fully committed to Christ Jesus can any nation become heroic.
What a Hymn !. What a composition ! O Lord I thank you for this gift of wonderful and great composition of this excellent Hymn ! We will sing there in Heaven with these words The heaven thou gavest is eternal The shine is for ever over all To thee we sing eternal praises O Lord for the eternal Love We thank Thee for Thy e-ternal Heavens While all sufferings rolled away Through all our will we keep you praising And rejoice for ever more We gaze thy mightiness O Almighty Lord While humbly we adore thee Thy words are joyful and comforting Will keep us in perfect peace The sun of heaven that shines for ever All the Nations under Thee , No time, no day & night ever happen Thy wondrous doings heard on high So be it, Lord; Thy throne shall never, Like earth's proud empires, pass away: But stand, and rule, and grow for ever, Till all Thy creatures own Thy sway. AMEN PRAISE BE TO THEE O MY GREAT ETERNAL LORD AND GOD - AMEN AMEN AMEN .
@EnglishAndBeautiful Hello, I am a German LTCOL and I can feel with you. When I hear the German national anthem, my hairs on the back of my neck stays on end, too. Greetings from Berlin, Germany.
I see two possible influences behind the theme of the text : (1) The British Empire, “on which the sun never sets.” (2) The continuous cycle of prayers which have been, and still are, offered day and night, around the clock, in our Monasteries by our beloved monks and nuns, and have been so offered since the earliest Christian monastics went into the Egyptian desert in the Second Century A.D. Whatever its thematic inspiration, the hymn is lovely and has been one of my favorites since I first heard it four decades ago.
during the prayers the choir are singing a taize chant: "Your will be done on earth oh lord" the robed choir did a really good job - does anyone know who they are?
I'm not really sure what the music is that the Choir are singing after the hymm and before the National Anthem. If someone could enlighten me I would be grateful.
Why be proud over something you had absolutely no control over? I am English by decent but still.. I don't understand that. Loving your country is fine but you had no choice in your heritage
This was my England once upon a time shared experiences

So glad Britain is still great at something.

What a Hymn !. What a composition ! O Lord I thank you for this gift of wonderful and great composition of this excellent Hymn ! We will sing there in Heaven with these words
The heaven thou gavest is eternal
The shine is for ever over all
To thee we sing eternal praises
O Lord for the eternal Love
We thank Thee for Thy e-ternal Heavens

Very, very nice. No-one does "ceremonial" like the British. Lovely to hear the organ in full "thunder" mode again.
