  • Private pilot steep turns. Steep Turns are required on your private pilot check ride and they are misunderstood by a lot of pilots. You might find a few tips for improving your steep turns. Good luck and thanks for watching !
    You can also do them without using trim and Ill put up another video covering that method.
    This is in no way a copmplete video on steep turns ...but it will get your started fly safe abd have fun !

      Awesome ! Thanks for watching ! I actually started making videos to help me teach better. You might try recording the audio if nothing else and you can reply it later. I found hearing and seeing how I was teaching was eye opening.
      Have fun teaching! I enjoy it but I’m getting a little tired of saying more right rudder lol.

      Welcome to the club ! It’s fun being an instructor with such easy students. Although challenging students are fun also !
      Thanks for watching! “Fly more and have fun” is my advice to every new student.

    Very nice ! I Love the Cessna 😀

      +1 to loving the Cessna. Pretty hard to beat them when it comes to training aircraft.
      The technique works on almost any aircraft though and once you learn to “lock it in the groove” steep turns get boringly easy. I like to use it to show how much most of us over control the aircraft in pretty much every phase of flight.
      Thanks for watching !

    I was taught not to use trim during a turn as it is only a temporary phase of the flight, and as you'd have to clean it up after you come out of a turn.

    • @NEROAviation
      @NEROAviation  3 роки тому +3

      The temporary forces in a steep turn are exactly why I trim in the turn.
      For a normal turn or something not on a check flight I don’t use trim for turns.
      Once you get into larger aircraft trim will be more and more important for steep turns as a maneuver.
      I suggest you try it while performing a steep turns with an instructor... it’s interesting to see how much it helps for Steep Turns ( the maneuver).

    Nice video. Just a little slower as to not overload the student. Thank you for sharing your know-how with someone else. New pilot coming on board.

      Lol ...I talk fast and throw a lot out there. I don’t expect it all to stick on just one flight ( or even five flights). If I feel like the student is struggling with something I slow it down and approach it from a different angle if I have to.
      Thanks for the insightful observation! I’ll see about slowing it down a bit, but no guarantees.
      First few flights are a blast ... have fun!

    Just tried these the other day. So it doesn't look like he wasn't pulling back on the stick at all but just turning and using power to keep level. I was actually feeling a little G force as I was trying and actually I had to stop after a few minutes because I was getting a little nauseas. Have you seen that before in a student? The bank just seemed too far for me and I was actually leaning in the opposite direction of my turns. My instructor was mentioning power but I am not sure if he was saying to power before the maneuver or during it. Once I started feeling queasy we knocked it off and headed back to the airport. I have 4 hours of flying time in so I am hoping I can get better and not get that feeling again.

      @NEROAviation  2 роки тому +2

      Yeah totally normal and don’t practice them over and over … usually i don’t do more than one or two and usually just one.
      So for entry your banking which will cause a loss of lift so to keep the altitude and airspeed you need to bump in about 200 rpms . If you don’t add a little power your going to lose one or the other and the basis of the maneuver is keeping airspeed and altitude.
      The reason we aren’t fighting the yoke is that we added about two rolls of trim in.
      As you roll in bump in a little power then drop your hand to the trim and roll in one roll downward as you hit 30* of bank and another roll to 3/4 of a roll to lock in the horizon as you hit 45 degrees bank.
      Trim for steep turn is not all that important for a 172 but it helps. Trim starts to matter as you upgrade to larger more complex aircraft though.
      Try chewing peppermint gum. Don’t over do it at first on maneuvers. Also make sure to have a little something to eat (granola bar and a little water or something).
      Also if you got really nauseous get a garden trash bag for your flight kit don’t mess around with those little tiny bags.
      My worst day flying I took a multivitamin on and empty stomach as I ran out the door and forgot my breakfast … steep turns about killed me .
      If it gets worse you can take motion sickness pills but really if you did more than one steep turn that was probably the real reason at low hours you have tunnel vision and they are disorienting for even accomplished pilots sometimes.
      Have fun & fly more !

    Failed this maneuver on my sport checkride. Gotta coke back and redo this one thing. Having hard time coordinating

    • @NEROAviation
      @NEROAviation  4 роки тому +4

      Try using a roll or two of trim and looking at the horizon and how it relates to your dash.
      I find that most students try to fly way to much on steep turns and they move the yoke one way and then need to move it the opposite direction to counter what they just did. Try to keep your bank locked into 45 degrees and use more back pressure or trim to keep altitude.
      Good luck 👍🍀 once you “get it” you’ll be surprised how easy they are! It will just click at some point. Fly more ! Have fun !

      @@NEROAviation you are right. I am flying the pipistrel alpha trainer. It has electric trim. I went out with another instructor and he showed me his way of doing this maneuver.
      1. Establish stable flight with 4400( rotax 912) at safe altitude.
      2. Trim up for 85 knots
      3. Roll into turn with rudder and aileron
      4. While rolling into turn, power up 300 rpm to 4700 before 30 degrees of bank. ( waiting to give power only put me back behind the power curve and caused me to chase speed in the turn) by adding power early, it arrested the loss of speed.
      5. At 30 degrees, add back pressure and establish proper site picture out of the window and hold that while divding attention inside and out.
      6. Roll out with rudder and aileron.
      The turns are actually two separate maneuvers in my mind because the left does require the same inputs as the right. I was able to go back out with my regular instructor and perform them correctly consistently. Kinda cracked the mystery for me. Now my confidence is high.
      Retest is this Saturday at 1. We will go out on sat before the checkride and perform a few turns and softfield takeoff and shortfield landing( i didnt do these during first checkride)

      @@NEROAviation I did go back for retest. Had three things to do. Softfield takeoff, shortfield landing and steep turns. Did well on softfield takeoff and steep turns. Came in for shortfield landing and hit my spot and bounced. I did a go around and just let my nerves take over. So now i have to do one shortfield landing on monday the 22nd of june to get sport

    Steep turns needs getting used too first, because when you enter the turn the g forces pulled me and i was just zoning out 🤦🏻‍♂️.

    • @NEROAviation
      @NEROAviation  4 роки тому +3

      Yeah ... this was just his intro to steep turns we will practice them lots more.
      The g forces and the scenery wizzing by make steep turns challenging , but fun ! The student said they are his favorite maneuver so far.
      Steep turns are usually one of the first maneuvers on a check ride and doing them well sets the tone for the whole flight.
      I try to make sure the student is not feeling sick after the first one ( I make sure to ask if they want to try another one). I I got a bit confused on my first couple ( couple dozen lol)
      Thanks for watching! Great comment !

    Best way for CFIs to make more money is to give you SO MUCH non stop instructions. Avoid them. Stop talking too much if you care. Fix one issue at a time.
