Let’s start at the beginning! In this video we talk about tips for getting on your bike, keeping your balance while you start to pedal, and how to safely stop.
Thanks for not making this weird. I am a new commuter cyclist and while trying to manage traffic and bike lanes to work I find I was also struggling with this maneuver. Thanks for the help.
I spent few days watching similar videos, this one is the best for absolute beginners. I am 58y.o., in past 20 years I was bicycling maybe 5-7 times, I can start, but how to stop scarred me until I saw this video. I can even teach my wife bicycling now ;) thank you!
Very instructive movie. I am from the Netherlands and biking from very early childhood so I don’t even think about this, but for new bikers or re-bikers is it very clear and has good tips.
Thanks for the very helpfull info. I hsd to give up cycling 4 years ago thanks to 2 bone on bone knees and am now 12 weeks post op from have bilateral knee replacements and am no ready to ride again.
Some of us who are nolonger 'spring chickens' would do well to buy bikes that have very low step- throughs, being able to mount and dismount safely is far easier with this kind of a bike. Not sure why this was not mentioned in your video when it is especially important for those of us who ride electric bikes.
Or, if you have a coaster brake, then you have to lift the back wheel and move the pedals forward into a starting position, because they won't turn backwards.
Awesome content. I’ve had the luck (discipline) to learn from a local bike coach, tips like those specially regarding cleats. But now I can share to many bikers your content ! Thanks a lot
Bikes I see in the US have the rider sitting high on a perch like a sea-gull on a wooden post. That is a poor posture for riding a bicycle. It pitches the body forward towards the handlebars, placing weight uncomfortably on the wrists and hands. For riding a bicycle as transportation rather than sport, an upright posture for the rider is best. Upright is how we stand, walk, and sit for the least lateral tension on the spine. US design is good only for sport and for maximizing profits for the manufacturer and the chiropractor.
There are many different bike designs, and on a road bike, used in “big sports”, rider actually *pulls* bike with arms on high speeds instead of pushing it. Bikes are marketed as “mountain”, “gravel”, “road bike”, “endurance”, and etc. For commute, look for “cruiser bike”, or “urban bike”, those are designed for upright position, frequent stops, mount-through, and so on.
They mentioned it, rear first before adding front. Most bike have rear brake on the left then right brake is usually front. Test it on your own bike first tho. :)
Left brake is usually a front brake and you should use it as your mind brake when stopping. Quick tip if you want to stop fast lean your body weight over the back tire and you can use both brakes as hard as you want but that only works to some extent
Many videos show how to get on a bike, even with limited mobility... how about gracefully getting off with limited mobility... I fell on my butt after stopping to fix a shoe lace... there I was stuck and couldn’t get my leg over... so embarrassing!
I learned bicycling in two hours, 41 years ago, when I was 17, on a single speed bike, putting seat low, sitting on it, and doing power-push. Unfortunately this video didn’t exist at that time, otherwise I’d learn multi speed road bike!
Does this method of stopping work with foot brake bikes? I have both hand brake and foot brake on my bike and am a bit scared if me stepping on the pedal to stop will mess up the foot brake. Any tips? 🥹🙏🏻
It's that first momentum that gets me. I tend to veer to the right.

Its also worthwhile to drop down to a suitable gear for moving off before you come to a stop.

Very good info. Thank you. From an old rider.

I'm in the US and chose a comfort/upright/"Dutch" bike from many available here. Seat position is based on leg extension to the pedals....
👍👍👍👍
To stop a bike we need to squize left break?
They mentioned it, rear first before adding front. Most bike have rear brake on the left then right brake is usually front. Test it on your own bike first tho. :)
@@starnight930 yeah, i got tilted when i applied left brake back then
Simply speaking, both brakes together.
Left brake is usually a front brake and you should use it as your mind brake when stopping. Quick tip if you want to stop fast lean your body weight over the back tire and you can use both brakes as hard as you want but that only works to some extent
we differ;
left hand brake is the back brake!

taking a tumble is part of life. learn from it.
@@mbords01 except at 75 years old, taking a tumble is not so great…
@@FlashOhJoy I am sorry.
My bike makes irritating noise whenever I try to apply brakes

I think your cycle needs oiling.
It's simply the way that the brakes squeeze into the wheels. It's common but a bike mechanic might be able to quieten them a bit.

How to stop: brakes
How to start: pedals

if this video helps you, YOURE TOO OLD TO RIDE A BIKE
