  • What's up friends! In my endless search for the next best language learning app, I stumbled across this simple beauty in the app store. Allow me to introduce Bunpo. Though not without flaws, it's a real gem for sure. For the TL;DR version of this video, here's my Twitter thread with my Bunpo progress and pros and cons: / 1231911295995252737
Bunpo is a pretty cool, comprehensive app for learning Japanese grammar. It goes from beginner (hiragana, katakana, and basic vocab) all the way to N1 (advanved Japanese) grammar. I've found Bunpo to be most effective when you do a little bit daily, and that also helps the review section not pile up. You can start anywhere depending on your level, but it's always fun to watch the lesson checkmarks get filled up as you make progress.

Damn, I wish I found it when it was free.. I'm a minor and my parents don't let me pay for apps, because they deem it useless. I mean, I kind of agree with them.. Because now I'm learning by myself, costlessly, and I guess I'm progressing. My way of learning is by immersion (mostly fun), meaning I play RPGMaker games, listen to music and read books in Japanese, and then I write the notes in my personal notebook. Maybe it's a not a good and proper way to learn, but it's the only that keeps my motivation going. I used Duolingo, Memrise, and nothing else at the beginning, but it felt like a chore rather, and I wasn't really progressing. But Bunpo would be really useful for meaningful reviews.. Welp, too bad, I guess

Would they pay for actual books? I haven’t bought them yet but “the japan shop” has language learning story books that I am interested in maybe buying

    • @-hikikomori-7191
      @-hikikomori-7191 4 роки тому +18

@@M_SC I live in a country where the resources are pretty limited... And the book I once got about Japanese has hardly any Kanji, and it has absolute basics... If you want to get a book with solid information you can only get it in English version, which will cost you more in a foreign country... And if you want a Kanji book that isn't overpriced, it won't contain have the readings, which is ridiculous.
So I gave up on trying to find tangible resources, which I would only lose money on, and I'm doing my own research. Sure, it's hard without lessons, resources etc., but it's way more fun, and I feel like I'm actually learning!
I think everyone just has a different way to learn. But through having fun may be the easiest

Awesome to see this app get reviewed on your channel! I'm sure the bugs are because of how Bunpo started out as an iOS app only and was then converted to Android MUCH later, and the developer himself is an iPhone user so he probably has a lot of stuff that he still needs to figure out about the OS. Also due to there being so many different Android phones and versions of the OS on the market, it's definitely harder to program and make things actually work ;__; The iOS version is pretty much flawless tho, so if you're an iPhone user - you're in luck here! ^^
Funny thing is that I'm actually a friend of the guy who's behind this, meeting him by chance on one of my visits to Kyoto a few years ago and we've been friends ever since! So I'll be sending him a message right away about this review so that he can pick up on the "cons" that you mentioned! I'm sure he'll be quick to address such a thing as letting the user review only a selected few items, and not the whole list in one go!! (very good point there actually)

Hi Lindie :) I wanted to ask you, if you would be interested in discussing the topic of dying languages? Should we try to learn at least one to keep them from dying out? What is the impact of major languages such as English, Spanish, French etc on those languages? Are languages becoming less diverse because of that? I find those questions quite interesting and I think it would be a nice topic. Would like to hear your thoughts about this :)

I like Bunpo a lot, I feel like it's the best app I'm using (that I'm not literally required to pay or else I will not be able to do anything lol) much, much better than Duolingo. I like Duolingo for Spanish, because the sentences aren't like "thE BeaR daNcEs In FrOnt Of tHe sToRe" LIKE UM WHAt (no joke I took a placement test for Korean and i was like smh disappointment) I also hate how they just randomly introduce Kanji with literally no explanation. Moral of the story, Duolingo is better for apps that use the english alphabet. not so much for other scripts

I got stuck quite early on on the fundamental of verb, negative tenses in the n5 section. I think it's my fault, I'm trying to learn grammar before I have a big enough vocabulary. I'll come back once I get more vocab, I couldn't understand why I wasnt getting the rule.
The app does give you the vocab for the grammar to learn in earlier lessons but cuz I'm learning vocab from wanikani, memorise and pimsleur it feels like too much to memorise vocab here as well. I will come back once I've increased my vocab a little more.

Look for tutors on Italki :) maybe expensive, but worth it, in my opinion. And also, practice on HelloTalk or Tandem

I have a question! I am in the process of learning Japanese, and I wanted to ask about Kanji, I wanted to ask like HOW or WHEN do you use it. If anyone knows, please tell me the answer! Thank you! ✨

Kanji is used to make sentences easier to read. When it's just a bunch of hiragana it actually makes it a little difficult to read. Not sure if that exactly answers your question though, sorry.

Tofugu have a bunch of articles and this is mainly to draw people in to their kanji-learning app: Wanikani. Which is a good thing because that is 100% the best way to learn kanji.
      (I’m not affiliated!)

It's a good idea to start learning after kana, and when beginning vocabulary. I reccomend checking out tofugu's kanji learning methods and try each for a week or two, to see which you like

    What about japanesepod101 ?

    • @stephenrochester6309
      @stephenrochester6309 4 роки тому

I know a guy who learned most if his Japanese through Japanesepod101 so I think it’s probably good.
There are loads of resources for Japanese just make sure whatever you choose you stick with to completion.
You will need to target grammar and kanji no matter what.
As for me I started with Japanese for Busy People (3 books) and Rosetta Stone, then got Bunpo and WaniKani. Once I finish Bunpo I will move on to just playing games and using Japanese.io to log the notes of words I don’t know and have WaniKani going in the background until I know all the kanji.
The last stage will be to use Kodansha Kanji Learner’s Course with the free Memrise deck to learn the last remaining 300 or so Joyo kanji not on WaniKani.
I hope that helps in some way!
EDIT: also worth noting Netflix has great Japanese language support 👍

I use this app and also WaniKani for Japanese now I have finished with my textbooks.
On iPhone it’s not buggy but you just need to watch out for the odd spelling mistake now and again.
