Very nice tips 👍👍
Thank you!!
If I ever heard a foreman or anyone refuse to give someone water I would fire them on the spot. A company in my area got a $35k fine from OSHA for doing something similar and rightly so. That's a safety issue. If I see a guy using a table saw wrong, I don't let him cut his fingers off to teach him a lesson.
He's talking about 30 years ago bud wake up
This guy has a weird thing with pencils behind the ear.
@@bradleycarlton3223 my thoughts exactly. The shit they did to you as an apprentice carpenter Joyner 40 years ago....someone would be doing time now days . Just the way it was. 🤣😂😁😀😎
Only an asshole would refuse to give someone water lol. 30 years ago or not.....still an asshole. Give him shit for not being prepared but still give him some water.
@@bradleycarlton3223 There are still pricks out there that are still old school anyhow. Stay awkae!
Helper: hey can i use your pencil?
Vince: No sorry man it won't reach that far 🤣😂
🤣🤣
lol I was gonna say, everything here is first month stuff for anyone who cares about their job, but the pencil pull is sort of a good idea. But if you = only = have one pencil and it's a pencil pull, the first time someone actually needs a pencil they're gonna call you a *** :)
If I have less than 3 in the pouch and less than one in the pocket I feel like a dummy
Carpenters pencils make a great thickness gauge 1/4" & 1/2" usually.
And you can use it as a scribe
What a likable guy!👍
Thank you for the kind words Cesar Ramirez! Thank you for being here!
Hay Vince Ironworker Doug here; when I was young buck, I complained about water to the boss to . He said if you want water, bring it! So glad I’m Union now ! But I still bring the Beer 🍺!!! Ha! Ironworkers’s!!!
🤣🤣👍🏻
ive been doin carpentry for 10 plus years and its the little stuff like pencil pulls, etc. that make the trick and tips that easier.
Never thought I would see a 10 minute video about pencils
Wow!!!! Had to comment on this. The drill sharpening is genius!!!!!
When sharpening a carpenter's pencil, try cutting the narrow ends first! This narrows the sides, so that when you cut the wide end, you're less likely to break the carbon. (2:23)
Yeah that’s pretty cool didn’t know about the pencils getting one tomorrow
Awesome Terrance thanks!!
Can you fit the end of a sharpie in the pencil pull I’m starting as an electrical apprentice and want to be prepared and always have a sharpie for labeling wires and marking emt
I’ve used pencil pullers, my experience with them, they tend to fall out or the rubber grip will tear. I like the idea so much that I stead buy badge pullers that have the key rings. Drill a hole into pencil and now I have even better retractable pencil holder.
The sharpener on the drill. Frigging love that
OMG! I can't believe I found this video so late. I love woodworking in my spare time and have severe ADHD. I put down my pencil and well, its gone, I go through literally a box of them every two weeks and I only wood work on the weekends. I never thought to look for something retractable. Yay I am totally ordering one.
Anyone who is good and passionate at their job may be considered a "nerd" by those who are not. Keep up the great work Vince!
I guess imma nerd!! 🤓
Thank You! I have been using a pencil pull for 20 plus years. Like you I have them in tool pouch in the truck ext. I won't even start the job without it! Great Video!
👍🏻
Mann ppl can talk crap all they want, but being PREPARED is perfection .makes ANY day go smooth af. Drives my head crazy wen ur missing the Smallest thing that makes a BIG difference
You have the best show and helpful you r #1 thanks for all your hard work 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
Thanks William !!
I like these short tips and tricks videos. Thanks @VCG Construction!!! 😁 God bless.
Thanks Me Again we appreciate that and we appreciate all the blessings we have every day!! To you as well!!
I prefer carpenters pencils and I recently found a sharpener for them at home depot. It's funny how out the thousands of dollars in tools I have, I was the most excited about this 99¢ sharpener. It's the little things in life lol
Using those sharpeners cause the lead to break or at least the one I had did
@@KAKApoopooPEEPEE3 mine works fine. It isn't one you put on an impact though, that I could see being an issue
@@KAKApoopooPEEPEE3 I found that making sure the blade in the sharpener was sharp made sure that no torsion was put on the lead.
Same here
I got a dewalt razorknife and it has a cool thing where when there is no blade in it and you extend, retract, and extend, it reloads the next newest blade in the tank.
So if my blade is covered in gunk I either spin it around, or if its no good, retract and get a new one in a second, brand new blade for sharpening pencils like needles. When you get a tar covered blade on a retract, time to reload the knife.
You're the boss! Thank you.
Love these, seen at Lowes and was mind blown, now have several as well.
Wish they made them a little bit better though.
Thank you for this, my mum bought me a similar one and i spent hours trying to figure out what it did.
Gr8 little thingy the pencil pull. I knew they exited for office workers but never figured for blue collar guys. I'll probably look some up and buy a box for my guys. For the pencil, I'll stick with good'ol wood ones. You can offset the sharpening for scribing etc. I have a similar long lead one with refills that I never use. Does that pencil (the blue one) have the 1/4 inch thickness and 1/2 inch width like the wood ones?
Exactly the same!!
One of my favorite things with these is that you can use em for standard sized sharpies as well. Always have one on my hi-viz vest. Probably the best two or three bucks I've ever spent. Great gifts for fellow tradesmen as well!
Nice Colton!
Just saw one tonight at the depot that someone left by the table saws and I thought I'll never use that. I'm gonna go back and get it a few now. I don't wear a tool belt but these will be a time saver for sure. Thx Vince!
The pencil pull is handy, don’t let people make you believe you’re a nerd for wearing it!!
@@VCGConstruction 👍 Rule #1 never care what other people think about you!
You da man George!! 👍🏻
Thanks for the tip videos, as a DIYer I always learn something
God bless you man!
I used the the same pencil pull when I did solar for a couple years, it can fit a roof crayon and always had it on my harness. Super efficient.
Thanks Jake we appreciate it!!
Thats badass... do they make any for sharpies?
The pull should work for sharpie as well!!
Well done, brother !
Thanks a Johnny we appreciate it!
Good video Vince! Reminds me of getting and training new jet engine mechanics in the USAF. I’d hand them a mechanical pencil, a black pen, a red pen and a little green notebook. Then I’d brief them that they weren’t ready to work for the day if they didn’t have those tools (because that is what they were, tools to get the documentation squared away), and that was the only set I would issue to them. If they reported for duty and didn’t have them, we were going to have a little “chit chat” on the side about failing to follow orders.
Can’t do their job if they aren’t prepared for the work!!
I love buying like 8 pencils at a time. Feels like Christmas. Sometimes I smell the pencils. Mmmm
Nice vid.
My first view. New sub.
Good review
Love it
Thanks Steevens
Always love you brother! david
The excitement on your face when “ and out comes a new tip “ is great hehe
I like your pencil pull where can I get one?
It’s all about the .9mm mechanical pencil for trim, I use a Pentel P209 and a white wax pencil for finished surfaces
We appreciate the feedback!!
Nice!
My man fatbuddycat!!
For regular framing I use a standard carpenters pencil but for finer woodworking I either use a scribe knife or a fine tip mechanical pencil. I do like the idea of having a retractable pencil especially working outside as I have bad "pencilitis". I forget where I left my carpenters pencil or who I may have lent it to. Thanks for sharing Vince and I'll catch you on the next one!
Thanks William Logan we appreciate you!!
William, Norman will never mark moldings with a pencil , he always uses a knife as well!!
You've been called a nerd without a pocket protector...
Missed a perfect opportunity for a "pencil neck" joke! 🤣
I will give u guys a good tip, I’ve been snapping lines and doing layout for framing company’s, the magic pencil I use to write on concrete finish floors is a carbon arc electrode stick one stick will last u weeks without sharpening, tried every single pencil they have and won’t last me a minute
hey, Vinnie, I think you should post me one of those pencil pullers I am forever loosing pencils and they don't seem to be available in my area.
Cool, love the pencil pull!
Thanks Smoking we appreciate it!!
Lol, I love how passionate you are in ur videos and how you can really tell that you love the work you do! Also a plus/bonus that ur not bad to look at as well!😜😂
Great tip Vince.. 👍
Thanks Paul!!
I like and use the Swanson pencils too. One tip with them before you pull the plastic lead holder out to load it in the back pull the lead out and flip it over; the leads are two sided.
I started in the trade when I was 19, didn’t have a clue, guy I worked with never lent me his pencil, always said “where’s yours” so, I’d have to stop, find my pencil and carry on.
A great life lesson, taught me responsibility and look after things.
Like your videos keep on doing them
I had a similar setup with my roll of painter's tape when I was in the sign business. I always had my tape and nobody could walk away with it. 😆
Keep doing your thing
Man love your videos
I’m a union insulator
Much love from local 5 CA
Awesome thank you my brother!!
That's right. In my younger years, I went through that same type of lesson learning. I did too, at some point showed up without water to a jobsite.. on a dang hot summer day in Texas, Lesson learned!
I will probably stop by HomeDepot next week. Closest one here is about 70 miles. I have a few tools to pick up, including that pencil, and a Milwaukee Fan, maybe two.. How good does an HD12.0 battery fits on it?
Just bought one last week from menards! Can’t wait to use it for my theatre set builds!
Let me know how you like it!!
I love it!
Lol so funny I did the same thing a while ago and I love it. The only thing I modified was removing the yellow clip for better rubber grip.
Thats a good idea!
This guy is awesome made my day and learned a few things. Thanks man, Subscribed for sure.
Thanks Michael!!
I loved this video..made me chuckle. :)
My first Ticonderoga all the way.
👍👍👍 Great video. As always. What utility knife blades do you recommend
I like Stanley, I’ll admit I usually look for a sale !! 🤣🤣
Lenox are good
I got myself a Pica marker, the holster helps me keep track of it, got an in built sharpener just for a nice fine tip, no Stanley blade needed, and you can get different colour leads for marking different surfaces
I have a RotRing Rapid Pro in .5, .7, and 2mm. Got a "Trekker Pen" by "Rite in the Rain" that stays on my "KeyBak", so 💯 on the pencil pull. lol.
I live in my Duluth pants, decked out in a bajillion pockets. Has nice pencil holders.
My storage clipboard has a red and black lead "Rite in the Rain" mechanical pencil as well; stays in my truck.
Never understood the use or purpose of carpenter pencils. Got myself a Swanson Savage always sharp with my lighted level, I find it kinda annoying for fine marking, gotta tilt it a lot.
Have a pencil pull on my belt! ALWAYS. good addition. Doesn’t like getting beaten up much wish they would make them a little beefier but it does the job. Also a metal scribe is useful for marking punching metal or I’ve seen some smack it into lumber with their chalk line on the end for a quick chalking.
I'm retired from the trades but I still carry a utility knife, a sleeve of blades, a ball point pen and a Carpenter's pencil!
Always prepared cuz!!
@@VCGConstruction I love the Milwaukee folding utility that opens one handed! Made for electricians, it has a notch for stripping wire insulation.
The fastback?
@@VCGConstruction yes. I had to look!
Good tip as always Vince. 👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks Raven!!
Can the "dry marker" pencils write on a romex jacket?
I exclusively use the simple BIC mechanical pencils. Really easily to “sharpen” one handed and get a sharp point. Stays behind your ear, has a little clip in case you have safety glasses on... I love em
Edit: Forgot, also won’t roll! Not great for framers or rough carpentry, but I’ve used them for both. I’m primarily a finish carpenter so for that they’ve been the best option for me
Whatever works best for you Adam!! Thanks for the heads up!!
I use them too. They won't work on too rough of wood or hold up to heavy hands but they are outstanding for finishing imo.
For framing I just use the old 1/4 x 1/2 and I gotta get one of those pencil reels.
I am an already carpenter and I use only #2 for trim and rips on floorong. And any carpenter pencil for lumber, fine tip markers for roofing, vinyl, reflective materials, and pro sharpie chisel for block. I really didn't realize I do it that way untill I watched this
good job Dude, I'm learning a lot from your videos. Thanks!!
Just started in the trades and this simple trick has gotten rid of my pencil loosing woes. Thanks Vince 🙂
That look interesting 👍
Thanks Darkmagic!!
Commercial/Industrial Electrician here... I don't use Carpenter's pencils, I choice is 'My First Pencil' made for little kids just learning to use one. It's three times fatter than a Ticonderoga #2 so it doesn't ever get broken if it gets dumped in my tool bag and it's easy to sharpen because each one comes with a sharpener for it's fatter size. Because I often do exposed pipe work I prefer the #2 because any marks I make are easily taken off. Been using them for years and even hand them out to my crew with the admonishment that Sharpie marks are for marking cuts and pencil marks are for bends.
I've tried the retractable pencil doohickey but having a pencil swinging around will get caught in T-grid and other things in some of the spaces where I have to work. Because I wear a hard hat I use a snap-in 'MC' strap for steel studs that I can clip to the brim and keep my pencil there. I also use another clip for my sharpie and for my terminator screwdriver (The tiny one) for when I do control work on machinery. The clips can be used so you can have a pencil just under the brim edge and a sharpie just over the top of the edge on the same side of your hard hat. I also use a Glazier's pouch in my belt... it's a small pouch they use for their glass cutting tools with three small sections for my punch, pen and another terminator or Sharpie (Sharpies take some breaking in to fit but it's worth it in my book)
That’s some good feedback cuz, thanks!
Hi, luv the videos...but, would have liked to heard about the dimensions of the carpenters (1/2” wide and 1/4” deep) that’s useful information also sharpening on the bias is an alternative tip....also useful thanks
We can do a separate video for just the carpenter pencil if you like?
VCG Construction yes plz
Ya I use it too.and yes they call me nerdy but behind my back lol.great video
Thanks Doug!!
Hey Vince check out the Pica or Hultafors pencils!!! Beats any carpenter pencil yet! In my opinion
The do make a sharpener for the carpenters pencil as well. And can’t you sharpen any pencil with a utility knife?
As a helper my first week I'd borrow a pencil, break tip first strike. Than ask for a blade to resharpen it within 5 seconds. He got me into shape quick
I totally agree with you on this video I hate being at the job when people ask me to borrow tools and pencils and shit like that. Always tell them where is yours at? you worked here for how long?
I need to start asking that!
Been a trim carpenter since 1982. I have always used a mechanical pencil, as does everyone I've ever worked with.
9.0 lead is great
just got a OX pencil from Lowe's, it's similar to Pica pencil. These pencils are game changer.
Hey Vince, you lasted a lot. I never waited for it being sold, but made it already.
Sharing is caring
These are the golden rules we learn at a young age!!
You know how you know you are a good salesman? When you can get people to watch a 10:16 video about a pencil. I actually watched the entire video. Great delivery and energy. I would buy shit from you.
How about a tutorial on the speed square.Do you know how to use one?
it might fall out behind your ear ... but it rests just fine in carpenter's crack.
gray man and then nobody wants to borrow it as well
The way this dude is passionate about tools and carpentry reminds me of my father and how i wanna be when i start my own buisness
Thanks for sharing this info! I have seen you use that pencil pull!!!
Thanks MJC !! ❤️
I like the magnetic "Quick Snap" by Magnogrip. No strings on me, lol.
Haven't lost a pencil yet after a year of losing pencils every month.💯
Plus magnets dont break!
Magnets definitely break.
@@pingpongstar11 Really! What's gonna break first on this style pencil holder. The retractable string, the spring or magnetism, no moving parts. Come on!
Awesome video man. A lot of truth and helpful advice.
I tuck my pencil under the rim of my hat right in front of my right ear.
Same, I usually wear a shitty baseball cap on the job, helps absorb the sweat (Yes, I wash the hat) and I am bald so no sun burn, in the winter it keeps my head warm, It helps keep my hoodie's hood from going over my eyes and it's a perfect pencil holder! (Can clip a flashlight to the brim as well!) The advantages of wearing a hat!
Same here, works great
Also a hat protects your head from the occasional bump
@@loganofnorth880 yes. You are absolutely right about that.
Oh my God Vince I loved the pencil video that was awesome brother. It brought back so many memories back in the day. I started wearing a tool vest because it was the most comfortable fastest method of storing my pencil there right at the top of your vest and you always had multiple pencils and yes I was always giving them away but always had enough just in case LOL
I love the tool vest as well cuz!! You have the Atlas?
@@VCGConstruction No I do not have a Atlas but I do like them.Mine is a little lighter version and it's called Bjornklader. I have been using them for around 10 years they are awesome and only around $100 compared to the atlas in price
I’ll check it out cuz thanks!!
I was using that pencil pull years ago. Good idea, cheap indeed but doesn't last longer than couple of weeks. The line worn out quickly. Once it breaks you cannot fix it.
Just found this channel & I’m feeling an ultra delco vibe. Subscribed.
Welcome to the gang Spencer!
I use my plumber's crack as my pencil holder . No-one ever ask to borrow my pencil!
Shit. That was you?!?!
Those pencil pulls are great! I’ve bought them for a few helpers we’ve had before. But I wish they would work with a mechanical style drafting pencil and not just the carpenter style.
The individual leads on the Swanson also are bounce sided you can pull out the little piece of lead and flip it over
Never had luck with that, once the lead came loose it just seems to fall out for me
Gotcha I do architectural sheet metal I use the Swanson everyday my favorite by far
i got an adhesive pencil clip on my hardhat 👌🏼👍
You missed one my friend!
I'm one of those who goes #2 for teamwork, and yeah, it will stay behind your ear- for a while. However, a SHORT#2 will stay there all day, so cutting it in half gives you 2, and I pick up the stubbies the others throw away - a free new pencil to me!
