  • Jess here, with a very talky video about Jackson's Import guitar's quality over the last 10 years. I'm not seeing the value on some of the prices of some models. Concerned about "High End" Pro Models now being made in China instead of Indonesia which wasn't the best quality either in the past.

Jackson has a lot of balls asking nearly $1500.00 for a chinese made guitar. The messed up thing is, even if it is made well and feels "quality", that guitar only cost jackson about $225 parts and labor in a cheap chinese factory. Retail on this guitar should be maybe around $799 at the most. Its outrageous and borderline criminal.

Do you think it actually costs that much? Curious, that's wild if so and yeah for sire I agree that's WAY too damn expensive for a high end guitar made in china. I mentioned in the video that I might bite the bullet and get the Marty Friedman Pro. I did, got it brand new and luckily used a coupon to lower the price.

Guitar companies are out of their God damned minds! I used to work at Guitar Center. They used to charge you $2,400 for a Jackson KV2 Blue Ghost Flame an employee would only pay $1,050 for. A Gibson Les Paul Custom? $3,000. Only $1,800 if you're an employee though. Mark ups are insane!

You're completely right!! Im a Jackson from the Beginning!! Had a '95 Jackson Kelly Professional w/ A Floyd and Duncan Designed pups..
Nowadays i wont buy ANY GUITARS if they aren't Ibanez or Jackson older models too! Cause as you said, which i concur with 110% with, newer models dknt play/hit the same.
Would rather get a nice cab or amp with those Prices lol cause I'm old school, still running a (2) amp Setup (Wet/Dry) cause beats the sonud of Air being Moved🤘🏻😈🤘🏻

No Chinese guitars here. Its a moral issue. My Dave Mustaine 93 Jackson Pro is outstanding. It has the old Kahler tuners at the bridge and there is no whammy bar. Japanese made and solid, great guitar. I have a 2015 Dean DM Trans blue, its great quality. Cant wait for the new Kramers to come out.

The trem bar issues have nothing to do with the guitar being made in China. It's a Floyd Rose issue. It's like complaining that you don't like the sound of the Seymour Duncans cos the guitar's made in China.
So basically, your only issues are you don't like the binding and the "feel" of it cos it's made in China. Bet if it said "Made in Japan" on the back of the headstock you'd be raving about it.

Actually no, in person, you can see the materials are less quality like I was trying to point out. The neck joint carve is like an X series instead of a Pro Model too. I would be irritated if I saw Jackson using these materials on a really high end guitar. This one even has a huge chip from being damaged in shipping and you can see the wood they used for the body has an ugly glue job where the large horn it. We would never see it if the paint was gone but it adds to the build being lazy. Yes the Bar is a floyd thing and I thought it was obvious about that but I'm still gonna to point out the issue even if it's not the guitar brand's fault. Probably should have been caught in the QC area. There's better guitars people can buy that have Seymour Duncan's and a Floyd, I'm not seeing a $1400 value. This thing doesn't even have a gigbag, which is part of how the one at my local store got damaged during shipping.

One of the issues with outsourced production is that brands often approach the factory with a basic spec sheet and once a production run cost is agreed, leave it at that.
You are not buying a Jackson, you are buying an XYZ instruments factory guitar.
The brand might have specified the fretboard radius, neck width and depth but they might not have taken the time (which in business is money) to make sure the factory is adhering to the same carve as the American/Japanese/Whatever production models.
The neck on my '91 Japanese Soloist Pro is a dead ringer for the profile on my USA Jackson SL2H.
Likewise the thinner, flatter profile of my '86 Charvel Model 6 had the same feel as a Soloist of similar vintage I got to play (but couldn't afford!).
It's that attention to detail that made the original Japanese Jackson's stand out.
My Indonesian Ibanez RG Premium - with a way too high nut slot and mismatched locking nut width it ain't so premium - is supposed to have a Wizard II profile, and if you measure it, it conforms to spec.
However my late 90's Japanese RG 505 has the same Wizard II neck and measures the same depth with my calipers, but has a very different feel to the Indonesian made guitar.
Worse still were the early LTD range which undoubtedly came from the same factory as the Epiphone brand as the neck profiles were pretty much a carbon copy as Gibson's budget line.
The point I'm trying to make is that it's not the country of origin, but the brand owners that care enough to ensure consistency through the different factories.
It's not a cheap knock off of a Jackson, it's an expensive officially licensed product, shouldn't it play like a "real" Jackson?

    Great video, man!
Imo Jackson have been going down in quality since about 2010 since they left the Japanese factory. The Indonesia stuff was ok, but not at the 1200$ price point. I was really excited to see the mirror soloist come out this year & almost bought one until I saw that it was made in china... Seems like fender is just manufacturing Jacksons as cheap as possible while trying to charge a premium for them & riding the coattails of a once great brand. You can actually get a brand new MIJ ibanez prestige for less than what they're asking for a Chinese Jackson theses days. Very disappointing

Was a bit sceptical at first about the made in China but I wanted a crackle and as far I know only China is doing crackle finishes for Jackson at moment anyway. Very true, I would never pay $1,400 for a new guitar to have to put more money into replacing hardware like the bridge. Pots and wiring are probably crappy. Perloid inlays, cheap binding and a guitar that feels cheap; no amount of money will fix that. IMO the Blue "lighting crackle" doesn't look good asthetically. The Red crackle looks better. No way that guitar will retain it's value.
Your Japanese KV was around $1,500 new not including the case, with all quality of a USA build. Trying to locate one now will easily set you back $2,500.
The used marked it where it's at. That's a much better investment and it feels like a quality instrument. I have a nice import RR that I love! Needs a little work but the price was right. Rock on \m/>_

I doubt they are as nice as your Dave Mustaine King V but they look nice but out of my budget. $1400 is the new mid price unfortunately. Inflation has really went up for guitar prices even the used market has gotten crazy since these new gouging prices.

The way I see it, if the guitar is great and has the quality and detail, I don’t care where it’s made. That is, as long as the price justifies it. Personally, I’d pay no more than 2000 for a les Paul and no more than a grand for any other guitar. After that, the quality gets to a point where it stops justifying the price and it becomes a matter of brand. That’s why I like every other pro series model except the crackle. Only way I’d buy this is a b stock model for 1100 bucks. Because in all reality, you’re paying an extra 400 bucks for a specific finish. You could get a cheaper one and learn to do crackle paint for cheaper than that. Not because it’s Chinese, but because the quality couldn’t possibly justify the price at that point.

Jackson Im favourite brand. I had several. In the mid 90's i had 2 "professional" japonese Rhoads, and i had issues with booth.
    I dont agree with you.
I think there are excelent Indonesian and Chinese guitars. But sometimes the Qc is not so consistent.
The bar of that blue crackle Rhoads must have been changed in the store.
Each crackle guitar is unique. There is no 2 equal guitars.
Regarding Solar, theres a lot of people with problems with Solar guitars. One of the things is that a lot of Solar guitars get crackles in the Ebony fingerboards, and that is mutch worst than a "cheap" binding!
I think its a sign if the new times...

People have such a stupid mentality as to where guitars are made, not talking directly about you, I just see tons of ignorance online that say "USA OR NOTHING" In this day an age right now everything is gonna go up in cost around the globe. It sucks but that's how it is, I've played USA Gibson's that play like shit compared to made in the far east guitars. These other countries know how to make guitars and QC with most the big brands now is just alllll over the damn place. Even PRS who everyone RAVES about is spotty as hell lately. I do however agree that Jackson's pricing is kinda steep, I just purchased a second hand Ellis Kelly for $850 awaiting for it, should be coming in today. Excited to check it out for sure, I know a few who have it and say it's absolutely incredible. I just would never pay the $1300 for it brand new. Sadly it just seems that the "big" companies no long care about their QC. I've seen the USA Gibson Mustaine models in person an those look horrendous an that's a $2800 USA made guitar supposedly checked and triple checked for quality and alot of them just look like cheaply made guitars. Good video brother 👍🏼

I bought the Ellis Kelly a few months ago and did a review on it. It amazed me, I'm very impressed with the feel. The neck and clear coat actually feel like a USA select Jackson to me. I have two to compare right now, and they feel different. Enough to notice.

I thought everyone is after China over the Covid problem, but the problem I have with China is quality guitar making. I was in the market for a Jackson to go with my Kramer Pacer which is Indo made. For $800 great bang for the buck. Its built quite well but with two humbucker SD pickups. I wanted another guitar with a HSS combo and 24 frets and thru body neck. For Jackson the choice was obvious...the SL3 Soloist right? But the equivalent was the Soloist in crackle (gold) finish. I found a silver one and it felt cheap. The neck was terrible. There was no taper, the frets were sticking through the binding. The bridge was not solid. Made in China omg! What happened to Japanese manufacturing? I found a Jackson Dinky used that was Japanese from 98 with the pickups combo I wanted except its bolt on. Big deal. Sure blows the Chinese crackle away.

@@clanofhousecats8079 Do you have any tips as to which year or model I should pursue. Like what has the aesthetic, sound, feel. I know the 95 ones are probably quite rare and was wondering what could make the cut. BTW love your vids and playing especially!

@@konanarcher So can't go wrong with a USA or Japan made King V though if you're not trying to that extreme, maybe a Pro Series King V that's not bolt on made in likely Indonesia. The problem with those though is I've seen quite a bit on the binding crack on Indonesia built Jacksons. Would go with a painted neck but most King V's over the last few years have unfinished necks. I would go for one that has a fixed bridge instead of a floyd since Mustaine mostly uses a fixed bridge. Some Jackson X series models are also close to some Mustaine specs if you're looking to spend less money. Sound wise for a guitar I would recommend the Seymour Duncan JB Bridge and 59 Neck set for Megadeth tone. Passive pickups and Mustaine used a JB in the bridge for years. If you want active pickups it wouldn't hurt to get the Seymour Duncan Dave Mustaine Livewires. There's also the Mustaine Thrash Factor set that came out a couple years ago, Passive pickups. Thank you for your support with my channel! I'm budgeting to try to review some other Jacksons in the future.

It's a debate for sure. Looking at this objectively it's a hit and miss with Jackson as it is with most brands. (Imop) and from what I've witnessed myself. Quality really does suffer from Jackson. At the pro line price you can buy a way better quality parts and crafted guitar or bass from Schecter. And plus Schecter offers a left-hand version in just about every model that they make. Something Jackson doesn't even come close to doing. Here's my biggest complaint about most major brands. When you spend $1,000 on up they're shipped to you in a cardboard box. Not a hard shell case. I'm sorry when something that expensive is shipped to you in a cardboard box that's not the experience I want!!

Yeah! This was shipped in a box and damaged from Jackson warehouse to Guitar Center. Should have had a gigbag at least. I'm not seeing the value at $1400. You can get many guitars with Seymour Duncan's and a nice Floyd for even cheaper

@@clanofhousecats8079 sorry to hear about the damage. I honestly feel that Jackson guitars and basses are lacking in general most people buy them because of the reputation they once had and because of their shapes. The mij series that's out now is the throwback to the '80s and early 90s but I can't see shelling out over $2,000 for one

@@tonycarel1785 I actually can see the value for 2021 standards and shipping customs. The MIJ is worth it BUT they need to up to line in options, like there isn't a King V or Kelly yet, Jackson just dipped their toes back into Japan. I buy Jackson for spec. Their designs also feel comfortable for me to play

Man that same guitar in Australia is $3399 aud or $2443 usd and they put the prices of the USA made series to $6500. They are just pricing themselves out of the market. With some of the QC issues I have seen and also the almost 12 month waiting time for a guitar to arrive.

I won't touch Jackson's, over priced, inconsistent quality, absolute bare minimum specs. Could manage to have them Korean made for half these models with the lack of value you're getting to begin with 😑

I wish jackson (fender actually) would move their pro models to Korea and have ALL their X series made in Indonesia n maybe just keep their JS series in China. No hate towards anyway but NO way in hell would I pay 1400 of my honest earned money on any Chinese product. C'mon jackson...

Personally i think Jackson are rude to be asking what theyre asking for their "MIJ" line they have now 😡 like the early MIJ Jacksons were a way for people who couldnt afford a USA model to be able to have a Jackson.
Now they are asking not far off what a USA model is and im sorry i dont care how good the early MIJ Jacksons were (some were as good, if not better then some USA's) and the fact that 90's MIJ Jacksons are gaining value fast but im not paying what they want for a new MIJ model when for slightly more i can get a USA model, no way 🙄!

Japan became an expensive country to live in, so wages and other costs had to go up.
      It's called progress.
China is facing a similar problem, with spiralling property values and a shrinking workforce that is far less interested in taking slave wages and working 80hr weeks.
China still has lower regulation in regards to employee safety and environmental standards, but Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos are modernizing fast, while still being cheaper.
To be honest, it's the USA Jackson's that are appalling value these days.
Ever since Jackson's US operation was incorporated into the Fender plant, quality control has taken a nose dive while prices have almost doubled.
