Hanya Yanagihara on A Little Life - John Adams Institute

Hanya Yanagihara visited the John Adams Institute to talk about her book 'A Little Life' on October 5, 2016. She speaks with Auke Hulst. This evening was in collaboration with publisher Nieuw Amsterdam.

What I loved about the book was that it gave the story of someone who can't be "fixed." And it's not his fault. That is a very unique perspective in American art/culture. There is so much blame in suicides, so much judgment. So many trite happy endings on tv.

When I first finished the book, I actually felt that having Jude be an unfixable character was irresponsible and a horrible dangerous for readers. But after sitting with it I found that that was actually something I needed to hear. I was frustrated because that idea scared me. People HAVE to be able to be saved, right? I definitely agree now that expecting people to be fixed was the irresponsible part.

I’m a British reader, and I liked the book so much I had the American cover shipped to the us. It’s such a beautiful cover with so much meaning that I was left feeling unfulfilled with the British cover. This a hauntingly beautiful story that will stay with me forever.
