This video literally saved me a 2 hour round-trip drive to my dealer, the 3-6 weeks that their service department is perpetually backed up, and who-knows-how-much in labor they'd have charged me for the simple problem (rusted, fully seized bushing) that I found in the shaft. Thank you!
I’ve been working at a Stihl dealer for 13 years and these are the one unit I struggle with because I just don’t repair them that in depth very often. This is a great tutorial video. Thank you good sir.
I appreciate that sir. I also appreciate the feedback. After this repair, it took me about a half a bottle of dishwashing liquid to get it all off of me.
By far the BEST video on the HT 101 Not only did I get it back together I also understand how all the components work together now! This thing is tricky and Lester simplifies it better than no other! Appreciate you Lester
Awesome video exactly what I was looking for my pole saw came apart by the trigger pay someone to fix it and it came apart again so I'm going to fix it myself hopefully I do it better than they did
Perfect video explaining and showing everything sir! This helped me fix a customers Stihl HT131 pole saw. Thanks so much for this video indeed. I tried to do it on my own 3 times and could only get the upper shaft to close halfway. So glad I found this video. There were 2 other videos I watched but this one was easiest to follow! Keep it up
Thanks! You just saved the day for me. I removed everything Before looking at the videos. All parts flew away when I opened it. By the way, for those looking for the outer tube orientation, the short side between the end and the hidden rivet goes towards the chainsaw.
I appreciate you watching. I also appreciate you not only giving me positive feedback, but detailed feedback. I hope to get back to making videos on here. I’ve been so busy with my other channels, I’ve neglected this one. Have a good evening.
Thanks so much for making this video! I had a problem with an HT75 purchased 2001 where the chain would not drive when the telescoping pole was extended. It later got to the point where the chain would not drive regardless of whether the pole was extended or retracted. Using Lester's video, I removed the motor and found a small, wire snap ring around the splined shaft about 4 inches from the motor end of the shaft. As I removed the splined shaft further, I found there was a groove about 10" from the motor end where the snap ring was supposed to be. Its purpose is to keep the drive shaft from being pushed too far into the tube and disconnecting from the motor's clutch. Hoping this might help someone having a similar problem.
Great work Lester, that's a massive help. Much appreciation from the UK 🇬🇧 Sending one to the shop over here would cost more than a new pole !! Top man 👍
Great work Lester. Thanks for the updated video. A massive help. Thanks from the UK!!! Sending one to the shop over here would cost more than a new pole. Top man !!
Pulled apart my saw yanking on a limb. After quite a while of being pised trying to align the male to female end I looked up videos..... Thank you sir, you helped out greatly.
I managed to snap the splined drive shaft at motor end. With help of your detailed video, I was able to make one good saw from two bad saws. Many Thanks!
You’re a lifesaver!! I borrowed my brothers saw and the pole came apart in the field. With your tips I was able to take off the motor, put the pole back together again and reattach the motor. Worked the first time!!
Outstanding tutorial Lester. Thanks for posting and saving me so much time from having to figure it out what's inside these Stihl poles with no insight. cheers
I was trimming a huge oak tree and the blade got stuck In the cut 15 feet up, couldn’t get it out, branch snapped off and the saw came with it only to have the tube come off and the whole pole saw came apart almost. Without this video I’m not sure I’d have my pole saw working right now, thanks brother!
Excellent Video Perfect In Every Way I’ve Done a Couple Inner Shaft and Bearing Replacements And Always Struggle Sometimes Too Remember The Orientation Cause It Sometimes Takes Weeks too Get the Parts Before I Worked at a Stihl Dealer 😀😀😇😊👍🏼
Awesome video! These shafts can be a real head buster. The shaft can be assembled many ways but only will fully function if it is assembled the correct way.
I took apart my Pole saw and thought how the F*%k am I going to get this back together! I know know going to do it today! Great Visio one of the best I have seen! Thank you
I dealt with my HT 75 about 6 years ago. The bearings had some rust. One was unrepairable so I had to buy one. I'd had never thought how many parts were in the shaft. I ended up finding a diagram for how the guts worked. Thank God I only had to buy one bearing. You can sure spend some money on rebuilding these things if the previous owner had left two of them out in the weather for at least a year. My bill for repairs to both was the 75. They are great little saws, but I don't know if they're worth 650 bucks new. Thanks, great video.
I was really considering buying a used HT101 or HT103 because I'm a mizer, and I like to buy used and save money on MOST of my tools, saws, vehicles, and really anything I can save a buck on. But after watching 16:17 of this video, I realized its well worth paying the extra $ for a warranty on one of these!!! I consider myself a good (not great) but definitely good mechanic. And I dont want to fool with one of those, if I can avoid it... You are very knowledgeable about pole saws! And, if I ever screw mine up when its outside of the warranty, I'll refer back to your video. Because you are the pole saw man! And this is a great video on how to.
Dropped mine out of the boom truck and it fell about 20 ft. Some branches kind of broke its fall but it hit motor side down. Now when I extend it the drive shaft comes out of the motor. Probably that C clip that you show in between the 2 pieces of spline. This video is exactly what I need.
Excellent demonstration video, thankyou greatly appreciated. I'm a motor mechanic by trade. Just got a job working at our local council depot in small engine section. Taking care/maintenance on full range of electric & petrol stihl garden care products. Chainsaws, pole saws, brush cutters, whipper snippers, hand held & back pack blowers, etc... Already replaced inner driveshaft with flex end that goes into engine located inside primary tube attached to the engine. That was scary at first , but all good, got it working again. Now got polesaw that's just come in, chain doesn't spin when the secondary tube is extended all way out. Check problem out tomorrow, will be interesting, looking forward to seeing what it is. Hi from Redlands, Queensland, Australia.

I learnt some things from your first Video Lester, but to be honest there were some holes that had me scratching my head a bit. This new video is exceptional. Y'all done good Son. haha. Seriously though mate, awesome job. You have no doubt assisted a hell of a lot of people with this latest version, Me being one of them. Thank you very much Sir. This latest video could not be easier to follow. The only missing item is an explanation of how to identify which end of 'the outer tube with the black covering and the rivet in it' goes to the motor end so the groove orientation is correct. I found a manual which says " Looking through the outer drive tube from the engine end, the rivet must be at the top and the guides on the right". I'll see how that works out for me. I hope to see more videos from you Lester because I know they'll be helpful and save me time and money. I'm sure a local shop would be looking for a couple of hours labour at $90 plus an hour for what you say you can do in 20 mins. It's not always the money though, I like to learn about the tools I use and prefer to spend dollars on special tools or manuals so I can do the jobs myself. Thank you again Lester and keep up the good work.

I definitely want to thank everyone for their comments and kind words. I had been wanting to redo this video for a long time. Pole saws are my specialty. @@lesteroliveintheshop9825 I'm sorry to keep bugging you but I pulled it apart and the circlip seems good but I noticed the bearing on the bushon on the top part of the shaft that you mentioned aint there. Can you recommend me a place that I can get that bearing and what do I call it when I order it. I'm truly sorry for asking so many questions
Thank you so much, I recently bought an HT131 but can’t seem to extend it without the shaft disconnecting from the cutter end. I’m going to disassemble and reassemble. Thank you.
Can I say a very BIG thank You to you mister Lester Olive, I bought a used HT101 last week and while searching for videos your old HT101 pole video came to light. I watched it a few times in the last few days to try and determine the actual process but while rewatching it again tonight this new video came up. What amazing timing. Now I have a clear picture of what parts I need to order and how to reassemble it. May I ask for the measurements from the Hidden rivet on the main outer handle from rivet to Motor end and Rivet to Cutter end? This would help a lot as I am not sure that someone else hasn't been trying to fix this before me and possibly turned the shaft around. Thank You.
The previous video was like a thorn to me, but I couldn’t bring myself to take it down due to the large following it got. Hi mate nice vid....so we lube the round shafts that run in the liners but leave the splines the bearings run up and down dry yeah for fredom of movement so they dont get gummed up?
Thanks for this video, it helped me replace the bearings within my ht131 and put it back together. I have run into a problem though. For some reason the pole will not collapse completely and sticks out about 3.5 feet. Any ideas on what could be wrong?
More than likely it’s either, the outer tube needs to be swapped around, or the inner workings have to be installed from the motor end of the tube. There’s a stop rivet in the outer tube. Thank you for watching and commenting
Great video, saved me! Your editing is on point ✨️✨️ We have 2 stihl pole saws and they both leak oil no matter how they are stored. Yours is so nice and clean. I have tried to reseal and but they still leak! Any ideas?
Hey Lester, thanks for the video it was an immeasurable help. Now I have this HT75 and i need to know if there was a change over on the drive tube parts mainly the power end,. On this one the splined shaft runs all the way to the engine 78 inches {no spline tube at the engine) and i am not seeing the long plastic wear bushing at the engine only the bearing at the clamp end of that tube. Thanks again, Bryan at. Major County Dist 1 western Oklahoma
great video, you mention the distance between the rivet on the outer shaft is different can you tell us which side has the longest measurement eg is the greater distance at the motor end or the cutter end.thanks
Which end of the tube is the machine end. I have one that's in parts, it was free but I have to put it together. The distance From rivet to ends of tube is different. Thanks for the video.
I was having issues with my 101, had no money, decided to “fix” it myself, unscrewed the shaft....miles of springs and plastic spacers shot out. Huge mistake.
Thanks again Bud, the first time I followed your instructions the polesaw worked. Unfortunately after several usages the cutter head wont rotate again. Perhaps there's a part that's defective. Any suggestions? I'm gonna re and re it again and hopefully it will last this time .Thanks for your great video. Dave, Pefferlaw Ontario
So my pole saw was making a rattling noise I guess the springs were doing something and then one day the dang pole saw split in half. Luckily I was done cutting with it that day. It all started when my buddy was using it and came up to me saying the torx screws were coming loose. We tightened them but ever since then it’s slowly made more and more rattling noises and then came apart on me and the spring now exposed. It’s a great video but I’m wondering if I need to break it down or just put it back together. I’ve only used the pole saw maybe 10 times and less then 2hours of total chain sawing time
Probably just warped the inner drive shaft a little. Most all of them start rattling with use. If it’s functioning properly, I would not worry to much, as long as it’s just rattling and not grinding. I appreciate you watching my video and commenting.
Hey there, I finally tried pushing the pole back together and tightening the black piece. The motor will start but sounds like bell noise coming from the motor and the engine stalls. I assume I need to dis assemble it?
Do you know where I can buy a bushing? When I took the shaft apart I was missing a bushing. Specifically the bushing that compress the springs. Thank you
So my saw got stuck in a branch when I was trying to get it out it pulled off completely from the trimmer...now I can't get the middle "barron" to line up again on the cutter side of the trimmer. Any suggestions?
I am about to buy stihl 131 pole saw, my question is: if disassemble to store because lack of space, what is the shortest the pole can be in terms of lengths. Hope to hear from you. Thanks
My shaft won’t stay in place and keeps pulling out when extending . I can’t figure out what I’m missing but I can take the whole shaft out and there’s nothing holding it in place
I will try to keep answering questions, but I no longer make equipment related videos, as we are on a new journey. I invite you to follow along at the link below. THE LOUSY FLORIDA TRAVELERS ua-cam.com/channels/ESlQbmo7K7IzF2hmEbm4Ug.html
How do you fix a pole saw when it falls apart when using it and you put it back together but the head of the saw is not the same angle of the trigger and engine?
How far is the button on the outer shaft {hidden button) from the cutter head. An error was made before it was taken apart so we don't know. Other than that you have been very informative. Thanking you in advance Richard
Oh, one more thing to add; when you’re working on these pole pruners, a “Tub O’ Towels” is your best friend. The grease in these units is as bad as anti seize. You will wear it home all over you!😅

Any suggestions? I'm gonna re and re it again and hopefully it will last this time .Thanks for your great video.

I’m trying to answer people as much as I can. I don’t make these videos anymore, as we have started a new journey.
Do you know how much that inner upper extended tube cost? The square part that goes into the gear head on our ht101 broke off while we were using it.
I’ll look it up Monday and see
@@lesteroliveintheshop9825 Many thanks.
Great video
Yeah it was rainy only until it came apart. Should I look at anything specific as to why it came apart or just put it back together?
Rattling*
@@chris5352 generally the sleeve bolts just slowly back out and need retighten
Hey there, I finally tried pushing the pole back together and tightening the black piece. The motor will start but sounds like bell noise coming from the motor and the engine stalls. I assume I need to dis assemble it?
Do you know where I can buy a bushing? When I took the shaft apart I was missing a bushing. Specifically the bushing that compress the springs. Thank you
So, if the cutting head isn't rotating it is likely the bushings inside the shaft?
Do you know where I could by a Spline shaft part? The lower spine shaft that connect to the clutch
I don’t. I’ve since changed careers, and am not up on current suppliers

I have one of those ht101 it will run and the chain will turn until u go to cut u touch the wood it stop the chain what do u think is going on with it
Is the sprocket good, no grooves cut in it?
Lester, can you tell me what those o-rings are for? Mine seem to be too large to do any good on anything. Are they needed?
To keep dust and water out of the tube. I’d definitely replace them
How do you fix a pole saw when it falls apart when using it and you put it back together but the head of the saw is not the same angle of the trigger and engine?
Thank you for vid 👌
Thank you for watching and commenting
How far is the button on the outer shaft {hidden button) from the cutter head. An error was made before it was taken apart so we don't know. Other than that you have been very informative. Thanking you in advance Richard
Thank you

Where can I get these parts
Oh, one more thing to add; when you’re working on these pole pruners, a “Tub O’ Towels” is your best friend. The grease in these units is as bad as anti seize. You will wear it home all over you!😅
