I am pretty new to collecting Zipps and the way you outlined the process here is a great template and pretty much my journey so far too. At first I bought the ones with pictures I liked to show them off. Then I learned some stuff and made some purchases for collecting reasons. After digging deeper into the inventories I found about rare items and limited runs, so I needed a numbered item. Of course then the focus started to lean towards more precious materials and craftsmanship, which meant I was a serious collector hunting more for gems than trinkets. And so here I am now at the point where I am tuned in to the current events of the culture and now have to have the next new thing that isn’t even out yet. Good times

@@Zippofanatic77outdoors the hinge came a little loose but nothing major, will probably send it in at some point. I also noticed that flat bottom zippos are a little shorter than canned bottom ones. Have you ever noticed that? I put the flat bottom armor next to my flat bottom silver plate and they are the same size, but all my canned bottoms are slightly taller.

@@asciidity4193 yeah that’s the canned affect doing its thing. That is a stamped out feature. Yeah hinge evtually feels more wobbly then usual. I think it’s the weight of the lid. Throws u off what your use too.

@@Zippofanatic77outdoors I think I prefer the flat bottoms TBH. Once I get my silver plate hinge fixed and touch it up a bit, I will be using that and the brass armor as my EDCs, depending if I am going for silver or brass that day, maybe keep the silver for more special occasions like meals out etc.. and the armor as my daily beater. I see the brass inserts selling on ebay auction for £12-15 + P&P so will sell that insert from the armor, making the deal super sweet and cheap. like £8-10 for the armor case.

One of the best first purchases you can make too is David Poore's book "Zippo The Great American Lighter", 1st or 2nd edition, both great. The research he did for it is amazing; history, chronology of changes, great examples of prototypes, sales samples, and rare production pieces still floating around out there. Been collecting for 28 years and this is a must have reference.

Well I would say the point I really wanted to get across but Didnt explain well was that u don’t want to junk your collection up with a bunch of cheap ones. Yeah 20-30 cheap ones. But guys who been collecting years regret the money they spent on cheap one. All that money could of bought some really nice ones that add value to your collection. Quality not quantity kind of collection. I know a few of us. That’s our biggest regret early on. Not enough information out there at that time. So hopefully these tips help. Yeah cheap beaters are necessary but not an entire collection of them.

In Europe, prices are about 2-3 times more expensive than in the USA (talking about Zippo official distributors). I´ve managed to buy from online shop in the USA, and even after paying shipping to Spain, and taxes, I still paid 50% of what the same model costs in Europe.
