  • On July 27, 1944, Ernst Barkmann, in command of a Panther, ambushed a column of American tanks near the town of Saint-Lô. It is estimated that he destroyed between 7 and 8 Sherman tanks and various support vehicles in a short period of time before successfully withdrawing. Barkmann's action in the Battle of Normandy became famous and he is considered one of the most outstanding German "panzer aces" of the war. This performance came during the huge Operation Cobra, which finished breaking through the German defenses in Normandy. In this show, we take a look at combat.

    I’m from north Germany and actually my friend is married to his granddaughter! The family is living still here in Kisdorf, near Hamburg. Was fortunate enough to listen to interesting stuff during his WWII time. He lived a lucky life and was always seen as a real hero ! It made me very sad and angry they stole Banner’s and Gedenkränze from his grave in Schleswig Holstein back then… He will be never forgotten! Ruhe in Frieden Ernst.

      It is not well-researched because even the most basic check of US soutrces would show its completely made-up. The only US Units in that area on that day was a flanking/scouting force of light tanks and half-tracks. Barkmann could (no evidence) have hit a few of them but for sure he never saw a Sherman never mind knock out 8.

    Interesting when you look at the premise of what numbers and unit cohesion mattered in the the situation - had the Germans been smashed and lost 7 medium tanks, it would have ended whatever movement that was for a significant amount of time, if not canned it, and yet this incident only slowed the US offensive by *hours*. Essentially it was a Band-Aid effort in treating a severed leg.

    The Allies were VERY, VERY lucky, that:
    1. The Germans were chronically short on fuel.
    2. The Germans could not crank out tens of thousands of tanks, like the Soviets and the Americans could.
    3. The allies had OVERWHELMING air superiority, and could simply call on heavy bombers to carpet bomb German defensive positions.
    4. Militarily, Hitler was an imbecile.

    • @user-ys3wf7bl4k
      @user-ys3wf7bl4k 11 місяців тому +3

      The Germans produced almost 50,000 armored fighting vehicles throughout the war. Almost 10,000 Stugs alone were produced. Contarry to popular belief, German tanks were generally of inferior quality. There's more to a tank than just having thick armor and a big gun. The Maus and the Ratte were absolutely bonkers to even conceptualize.
      The Allies gained air superiority because they shot the Luftwaffe out of the sky, killing the German's best pilots in the process. That was before fuel became an issue in the latter half of 1944. The Luftwaffe should have done a better job of protecting Germany's synthetic oil fields.
      It's ridiculous that P-51's could travel for several hours and hundreds of miles and still dominate Luftwaffe fighters over Berlin, whose pilots had the advantage of being fresher for combat since they only had to intercept over their home bases. Cry more!

    The Das Reich or 2nd SS Panzer Division had a rough time in Normandy, many of its tanks were destroyed as well as fuel by Allied bombing and sabotage by agents of the SOE. This prompted the 2nd SS to commit one of the largest atrocities of WW murdering over 1,000 civilians. At the village of Qradour-Sur-Glane 653 villagers including 247 children were murdered, the men were shot and the women and children herded into a church where they were burned alive. The village still stands empty as a memorial to NAZI war crimes.
    Barkmann's so called kills were not recorded, the Americans reported the battle for Saint-Lo as mostly an infantry affair. While 2nd SS recorded some tank use but give few details, the division was dispersed until the 10 July. Like with most NAZI claims Barkmann's were largely propaganda to convince Adolf they were winning the war.

      Clearly you where there at the time. Or else, you gobbled the Allies propaganda straight up. History is written by the winner, never forget that basic premise. The NAZIs did a great job of condemning themselves at Nuremburg.
