My last year in the Marines, I was a crew chief on a CH-46 at HMMT-302, in Santa Ana, CA. The base was located on the spot that was an old Blimp base, with gigantic hangars. Best job I ever had in the Marines! We were in the air six hours each day, three in the morning, landing each 90 minutes to refuel, then three hours in the afternoon! I loved that helicopter! That base is closed now, and the squadron is in Oceanside (Camp Pendleton area). Two T-58 GE-10 jet engines, love the smell of kerosene in the morning!! That was in 1969.
I shed a tear watching this. I flew with the "World Famous Purple Foxes" in Iraq in 2003. Sad to see the Mighty Battle Phrogs finally being flown off into the bone yard at Davis Mothan AFB. They certainly earned their keep. These helos flew in Viet Nam, multiple West Pac deployments, Desert Storm, Iraq and all points in between. Semper Fi and Phrogs Phorever!!!
Two buddies and I enlisted in the Marines, two of us got helos the other went to supply. My buddy Chuck Miller was with the Purple Foxes in 69 when he was killed during a medivac into a LZ that was supposed to have been cleared. It had not been cleared. Shit happens but it still hurts just the same. Forgetting those who did not come home is not an option.
I flew in a Purple Fox bird in Iraq in 2003. We flew from Numanya(South'ish of baghdad. Believe between the Euphrates And The Tigris.) Flew in a Ch-53. For some reason we stopped in the middle of the desert and picked up a john deere tractor. It fit inside the cargo|troop area. We flew down to Ali As Salem AB. We lived in a tent city with no running water for the first few weeks. We got there in Jan 03. Didn't go back to CONUS until November. Thanks for your service
I was with HMM-263 in Vietnam from 69-70. While watching this video, I could still smell the exhaust and hydraulic fluid! Thanks for posting this video! Semper Fi!
The CH46 Sea Knight is plain ole BAD ASS, it served well and I will miss it. Just the look and sound of them coming in off a ship made you feel good. Semper Fi
Just so damn awesome...last two years in the Marine Corps served @ MCAS (H) Tustin,Ca. HHQ SQ...83-84 will always remember my time there & the Marines till I take my last breath...!!!
1967 MCAS(H) Santa Ana (at the time it was know as LTA) we were changing from UH34s to CH46s. Santa Ana was my first duty after school at NAS Millington. A lot of memories, some good, some sad. Semper Fi Sea Knight.
Much love to all the crews past and present whom have supported us grunts during training and combat missions. The CH-46 community always pulled its' weight. Thanks to the Marine who posted this video, I only wish I was sitting somewhere inside that Workaholic of a Bad-ass helo. Semper Fi Gent's, enjoy the Osprey
I have very fond memories of the flying birds in the Navy Squadron HC-6 out of Norfolk, VA. They were the backbone of the fleet with vertical replenishment and SAR. It was a sad day to see them go but the memories will last forever. The choppers in my squadron were hand-me-downs from the Marines from Viet Nam war. They had all kinds of patched bullet holes in the fuselage. They took a lot of maintenance to keep flying but were still fun. The shake of it while flying would rock you to sleep.
i was there in 86 when we became the last squadron formed. then 87 first west pac. all ch46 was hand me down from different squadron. Hmm 166 Sea Elk still have the first sticker logo. Simper Fi
There is a CH-46 on exhibit and open to the public at Patriots Point in Charleston, South Carolina if you are ever in the area. She's a Vietnam Veteran. Semper Fidelis to all our pilots and aircrew!
My dad was with hmm364 in the early 90s and seeing these flying was why I went into the corps. Got to see them once in boot camp before they left the ch46s
That’s me at @3:50 the third one in green coveralls. Gunny Hawley whipped his cord at me because we were the last to board an d they were waiting on us. 🤣 This was my last unit (HMM-364) before getting out. It was a fun flight, Did a fly over MCAS Miramar then went down the coast to Coronado and back to Pendleton. Had the pleasure off shutting down HMM-265, HMM-262 & HMM-364. PHROGS PHOREVER.
EPIC Phrog video, loved every second of it!!!!! They've been a part of US military history for such a long time, that I thought they'd always be there. SO sad they're gone!
Sad day for these guys. The Sea Knight was a special aircraft and I enjoyed flying along with them. it was a short experience, just one deployment's various flights and a handful of other trips, but it was good memories. Thank you to the pilots, crew chiefs, and gunners who took care of me on each flight. / Doc P
Although I never got into a unit with the Ch-46 Sea Knight. I always had a passion for them. They are so different looking in flight and I love that about them. I Got to see them finally over seas in theater in 2003 when a few landed in Kuwait to see the M1 Abrams Battle TANK. ERRRRA!
Though i almost bought tbe farm several times fying medevacs in Vietnam, I lo e tbe PHROG! I lovged a lot of hlurs in the phrogs flying medevacs with 161, 262, 263 and 364 in 1970
Awesome. I was with OMD Iwakuni. We had three SAR CH46's. It's a lot of work and even impressive to see the only three Phrogs on a fixed wing base. Congrats to these guys. It's sad to see the word "commemorative". Semper Fi
Just like watching a film of your "first car" . "A" model to the "F Beautiful aircraft...Thanks to Boeing. And ,yes,....The "Purple Foxes" HMM-364 certainly earned their fame in Viet Nam and later. May God bless them all !
I caught a few rides with 364 during my time at Kaneohe. They are more comfortable than CH53s. A grunt can get a decent power nap on a CH46 -- not so much on a 53.
Always loved seeing the Navy ones doing the VERT REPS while out in the Med to give us our mail and ice cream and other goodies! Quite a view as they slung external loads, dropped, go back for another load....usually two birds slinging loads.
Having grown up near MCAS(H) Tustin in California, it was common for decades to daily see CH-46s and CH-53s flying overhead. I came to recognize both by the distinctive sound each type made. Fast forward to today, and in recent weeks I heard what sounded like a lone CH-46, and I could see that it indeed was one, the first I had seen since its retirement from the Marines. The one I have been seeing a couple of times each day flies over northern Orange County, always either east to west or west to east. I can see that it is painted with a stripe down its side, so it is not military. Wondering if it is in fire service or commercial hauling of some sort. It's nice to hear a Sea Knight again, just wondering who is operating it. Any info would be appreciated.
Wow 😳,,,my lovely chopper,,,very nice helicopter,,Reliable ac I flow this ac for more than 25 years and I still like it,,,good chance to those who fly them,,,
I have but one thing (life) to give to my country (and Corps).........who the HELL came up with the idea to paint our beloved GREEN phrogs a battleship gray? Who do they think they are? Part of the Dept of the Na.....Na.....Na.....seagoing bellhops or something? I sure do miss my GREEN baby............HMM 261 Old School. But, glad to see they haven't stripped them all down yet. I'm riding my Harley to the Yuma graveyard and I'm stealing one to keep for prosperity!! LOL Damn she was a great ship and sad to see the Osprey replace her.
have a questions why does CH - 46/107 knows is higher than the rear, what I was soon on UA-cam these are great helicopter and sometimes I question replacements some of these helicopters.
Flew in them in Combat, never enough to take everyone into a LZ. So many times only a pair would move the 160 company leaving the first wave in danger. Once saw 6 lined up on our strip everyone had the mouths open we didn't think they owned that many
the 3 thumbs down hopefully are sad to see them go..... at least none had to do an auto or emergency landing...... HC5 Pilot...... (I ran the tower on the famous ditching video alongside the Ranger and got the other helo to do the rescuee before the H3 could take off....
Why didn't the marines just upgrade the 46 again and add upgrades that the Marines would need instead of spending money on the Osprey that isn't ideal for the Marines.
Yeah dude they need to upgrade that helicopter like its every marine fav like srsly why u gonna give us a shitty osprey like wtf a osprey is a shit pit
What a great aircraft! I flew the H-46 in Vietnam 49 years ago and it was an honor to be part of USMC history.
Paul Sniffin (Captain)
My brother-in-law flew a CH-46 with HMM-364 in Vietnam, and was shot down in 1969! Loved watching this commutative flight!! Semper Fi Marines!!

Mine was built in October of 1964 (Yankee Papa 11). Retired at Miramar where this overflight was done. I used a lot of Copenhagan on the floor boards.
Miss those days.
Damn even the hanger queen is flying!!! OUTSTANDING JOB MAINTENANCE!!!
Its beautiful. I miss this all the time.
Awesome video! Miss the good old Phrog. Cool to see some familiar faces too. What an awesome community.

HMM-163 6112 Crew Chief YP-01 1977 - 1981 CH-46 D, F, and E model. Good video. Sad to see the Phrog go.
My salute!
That helicopter was the ch 47 chinook of it's time
i still find the 46 sexier looking than the 47

We used to say "the last phrog pilot has not yet been born." Wonder where they are still flying in 2024. Cowboy (HMM-163 1977-82, HMM-161 1985-1988)
Hope those beer can patches are still holding up!
2:15 was that an AH-1 Cobra in the background behind the two?
Looks like a smaller version of Ch-47 Chinook
Semper Fi! 😊🇺🇲🫡
Usually these are great to hang out at the sea coasts
wonder if this was used in the movie Battle for LA most I ever saw in a group was 6 off the USS Tripoli LPH 10
shared in fb, helicopter safety
Until you've ridden in one theses beast you don't realize how huge (and loud) they really are.
Yup, flew on one or two, or three.
OooRah Purple Foxes!!... Phrogs forever!!
16:26 so from battle Los Angeles
I saw a flyby sight of these before
SEMPER FLY....don't miss that transmission "whine"!
I always thought the Sea Knights were smiling because of the lower windows of the front. 😅
What base did they depart from?
Read the description.
hollywood marines :(
Having Perty on the sky 😂 😂
I discharged from the "Purple Foxes" in 96

Whats the long lead for ?
It's too bad they didn't do a flyover of Tustin. If the pilots didn't know how to get there, those old birds sure did.

As Gomer Pyle would say "Golly"
Obsolete CH-46 will be replaced by the AW101 Merlin.
