  • The American school of piano building has produced the best pianos in the world. The Baldwin 6'3" Model L Artist Series Grand piano represents the highest level of piano building in America. This Model L has been customized in every conceivable way in order to elevate it to the very finest Baldwin L in existence.
Here are the refinements that have been made to this piano:
    ▪️Strungback service
▪️ Rescaled bass and tenor sections to lower the tension and provide extremely good clarity
▪️New Paulello wire strings in the lower tenor
▪️New Heller bass strings with Paulello core wire which produces a big growly, but very clear bass as large as a 7’ semi-concert grand piano!
▪️ Balanced action by reducing mass in the keyboard by removing the number of original keyweights (3.2 lbs) and reweighted the keys along a uniform touchweight profile to produce an incredibly even touch
▪️ Installed new Ronsen Bacon hammers to produce an exceptional creamy, warm tone through the middle of the piano and a beautiful bell-like top!
    ▪️Rebuilt the action to a like-new condition
▪️Concert level regulation in order to produce a wide dynamic range (ppp-fff)
    I hope that you enjoy!

Truly a stunning result you and Regi got! As you say, it’s such a tragedy Bacon felt hammers are no more.

Very dark voicing for a Baldwin L. Beautiful sound, strong bass as Baldwin was so known for. Quite hauntingly beautiful tone on some lyrical works.

It sounds so wonderful! I wish I had a Model L ,and if I did I would certainly have the upgrades done to yours to mine.

The singing quality is lovely. I also love American pianos but Baldwin were hardly marketed outside the US and Hamburg, not the US, supplies Steinways to most of the world. I had to make special arrangements to get an SD10 and Model D from the US to S Africa.

This is truly exceptional! How could I do something similar with a Baldwin R rebuild? (I live in a rural area, and my technician is wedded to Mapes strings.) My piano was build in 1967, and the hammers still have lots of life left on them. Whatever I do on this piano will be a really big decision for me, as I plan to have the piano for the rest of my life. I'm 54. I would appreciate any help you can give me.

Also, what is a strongback system?

It came out beautifully. I have a 1989 L and adore it. I wish you guys lived in NYC. I follow Regi with interest and like his playing as well as his ideas on pianos. I’m interested in what you say about the Paulello wire in the middle. By lower tension do you mean you changed the gauge? Or is the steel a different composition?

First, thank you so much for the wonderful comments about the piano. I am available to make these modifications on your L, if you would like. 😉.
This one is about as far from a stock L as one can possibly get.
As far as the Paulello wire is concerned, it has a lower % breaking strength than standard wire like Rösslau or Mapes. The gauges that were used are also slightly smaller. So it comes to pitch with less tension, raising the breaking percentage and lowering the inharmonicity. It makes the piano sound larger and the wire gives a warmer, sweeter tone but there is still plenty of lower when needed. This piano will never bottom out.

@@mevans4715 Thanks for your reply. I recently had my entire action rebuilt with Renner parts and 16 lb Blue Point hammers, which are fairly light hammers and I think are a very good match for the L. In a perfect world I would have liked to try the Bacons in the mid section, but getting things done in NYC is expensive and time-consuming. But the Blue Points sound very good and the ratio and touch weight are perfect. It has the Baldwin warmth but with some brilliance when needed. Now I am very interested in cleaning up some noise in the capo bar (all on the second string rest past the break) and replacing the bass strings, which are now 32 years old. I feel that if I can get the right strings on this piano I will be in piano heaven. Good luck selling your L. It sounds glorious and is worth every penny and I know it will find a happy home.

@@NYCVisualArtist I would get Regi Hedahl to rescale it for you and get the bass strings built by Gregor Heller.
