The Nashville Teens were an excellent R n B group from the UK who hit during the beat boom yesrs with Tobacco Road ,they had several more hits (they recorded Google eye against their wishes) and should have had more as they were great live, have a CD of them good to listen to Auckland New Zealand 2024

Saw the Teens live several times in the 60's along with the terrific Small Faces, The Who, Spencer Davis, The Animals, Rolling Stones, The Kinks, man those were truly great times, when you could see a chart topping group down at your local dance hall, where did it all go wrong. These groups could perform as good, if not better live than on disc, wish I could go back to the 60's now, I like modern music, but it all seems so electronically produced.

Nashville Teens are a British group, formed in 1962. This particular song was released in 1964 where it made No.6 in the UK and No. 14 in the Billboard hot 100. It was also released in Canada. The Teens have appeared in 3 films. The song is a classic, covered by several artists.

Met my future wife in 1964 at a dance where a local band played this over and over. She couldn't dance; I didn't like to but it didn't matter. We were married 3 months later and it lasted for 33 years until she died of cancer.

@Harmonicajello You sound like my older brothers who had to sneak this stuff into the house way back when. Thank God they did. I was born in 1966 into a house where The Beatles, Kinks, and The Animals ruled. I thank you Brits for discovering our Rock and Roll and returning it in even better condition than you had found it.

I discovered this song in the '70s when I lived in Ohio, USA. This music was unfashionable then. I only did karaoke once, in Iceland, and selected this song. I knew every note, this is the best version, and the audience was stunned. I had memorized every glitch of this great one. It is easy to sing, try it! This is priceless video, thank you so much for posting. If anyone wants to know about this group, I do know a little, and they were much appreciated in England.

I met John a few years ago, at a Strawbs gig in Toronto. (Hugh's Room) He couldn't have been nicer. It was an honour to meet him. I had written (badly) a review of a Strawbs gig way back in 1975 at my college in Canada, and he was interested in getting a copy! I hope he is doing well - 100% recovered from that stroke.

This is a live version, not the studio track,
yet the guitar sounds just as proficient
& I don't think either of the players is Page.
Besides, Page was always trying to
take credit for other people's songs
      when he was in Zeppelin.

I would love to think that I was running in such distinguished company. The only time I have been in Nahsville was around 1971-72 to record one of my tunes "Emma's Spitoon". It, as Roger Miller used to say, started slow and kinda tapered off. There is a great steel guitar player from Texas named Earl Clark and an Earl Clark that was a professional basketball player. It would be an honor to hang with you and Mike Loudermilk. It sounds as though there are some great creative juices flowing there. Unless you have lived in eastern North Carolina, I am probably not the Earl Clark you hung out with. I am getting older, still gigging, and still aspiring to write that one little gem that would bring joy to a lot of folks. Keep up the good work, stir up the gift that is in you. Oh yeah "Emma's Spitoon" is posted out here on UA-cam. It was recorded at Bobby Russell's studio, Creative Workshop. From what I was told by Bud Reneau, he was going to get Doug Dillard to put down the lead guitar licks. I hope that is he that you hear on the recording; what an honor to think the Doug Dillard would be playing on my tunes. Whoever it was, he laid some nice licks into my little diddy. Have a blessed day.

    • @jamesbckmstro3
      @jamesbckmstro3 8 років тому +1

People like Dillard are well respected but here in Nashville it's so ordinary to hang out with those kinda folks, tho I personally have never met him, went to his hangouts a few times in hopes of meeting him but never did at least not that I know of! Look up Earl Clark Nashville songwriter, he's had some pretty big success with many of his songs, used to hang out with him a bit so I thought for sure you were him. I'll look up your song and give it a listen.

@TheAmazingMorse Thanks. You were born into a great decade. Rock 'n' Roll had gone quiet somewhat due to it being commandeered by the impresarios. 1962 was awful for music in UK & The Beatles brought Rock back with a bang at the end of the year! I only wish i had seen their live shows before they hit the big time. That would've been something. But i was lucky enough to witness a fair few of the other 60's greats. Nashville Teens were real. They would drink in the bar with audience after shows.

Loudermilk wrote it but The Animals turned it into a blues rock masterpiece.

Mad Men kicked off its 4th season with this song played at the end of the first episode. Very fitting choice.

They weren’t from Nashville, and I don’t think they were teens.
John Hawkin stands out as professorial looking among this punch, and this foretells his future as prog rock keyboard king.

Art Sharrp was one of the vocalists, along with John Hawken's piano skills.

Does anyone know if this was the band with David Fairhurst in it? I met him on a train in Switzerland and forgot to ask the name of the band he was in that did Tobacco Road - too busy admiring the scenery!

@MrFoxhunter123456 ...Oops! Hi, Mr. Foxh (I wish you weren't really a fox hunter - the poor little bastards have enough trouble, already) - I almost asked a dumb question, but now I see: Ray P. was the piano player in the Nashville Teens.
Was he able to keep paying the bills by rocking the piano, or did he have to get a regular job or something?
    Thanks for your time!

The bass guitar is a bit clean for my tastes.
On the record it sounds like run through a B-18 Portaflex! Turned up to 8 or 9!

RedArrow73 I think the bass part on the recording was through an amp with a tear in the speaker.

      @@centralparkjoe1290 Disagree.
If you weren't around for vacuum tube Ampeg amps, I understand how you got here. My big brother had a B-18 Portaflex and they got quite flatulent above 5.
