Even though I work in the woodworking profession, seeing an artist like you take an old piece of iron and make a beautiful and useful knife from it, that makes working in blacksmiths Something I'd like to create with, Thanks so much for the lesson and sharing!
I realized when making the handles to these kinds of knives is that the more graceful and artistic you make the curves and sweeps, the more uncomfortable the thing is to hold.

Haha yeah! But in this case if you hold it by gripping the blade with your thumb and index, its very comfy. Like some chefs holds their cooking knife almost
my ten year old cousin started learning blacksmithing, and i'm teaching him everything i know, which isn't too much. but is still plenty for him to learn. and i think i'll give him a task to make a simple knife like this one just out of one piece and without the forge weld. just as simple little project. so i guess that what i'm saying is; thank you for the idea! 👍
Nils Osterberg just started watching your video"s ,while i"m building my forge. mixing the fire proofing around the fire pot seems to take a long time to cure. can"t wait to get started.thanks for the inspiration
Good work, I thought it might be wrought and you confirmed that, getting very hard to find here now, for so many years it was just any old scrap steel!
Nice Nils !!!! Looks exactly like the process discribed in the fantastic book "Swedish Blacksmithing" from Lars Anders..he also call it "the viking woman knife" i think..but im sure you know this book. Love the swedish forging tradition.. By the way, i really love your axes... Best regards from a french blacksmith

Thank you kindly! Im very confused about this knife tbh. Got some messages saying i was wrong to call it a viking knife. Since they also were made in the uron age. Aparently. Still waiting for sources on that
@ well it is a really comon design here in France too. Some call it "Medieval knife" , "Celtic knife" or "viking knife" or "couteau gaulois".... So yeah it seems to have been there way before the Viking age. But in a way it seems to have been used a lot then too... The guy that forged it first should have copyrighted it 🤣 Ive seen some picture of those knife that said they were gaulic knife (so iron age) on some archeological stuff somewhere... I'll try to find it again. In my opinion it's really possible that it was invented and uses long before the vikings but if it was in such great use by them, it's not that wrong to call it a "viking knife".... But as a craftman i understand that is also normal to give some credit to the first smith that invented it , but im afraid he's not going to be easy to find 🤣
I'd love to try something like this but unfortunately I have only toolsteel and other high quality steel here.... I'm getting my material from the "junk" of the company I'm working in. I really don't know how to get freakin iron.... I'm making leafs with a similar tail for practicing and once I made the end of the tail way more pointy as I thought and accidentally rammed dat thing in my hand... Since then I'm making a full roll on pointy stuff so it can't happen again
Greetings from friuli( it is a region in north italy but i suggest u to read something about it story because it has a culture similar to sweden culture)
Ciao Giulio scusa il disturbo ma vorrei saperne di più su questo fabbro mi sembra che sappia il fatto suo , ho chiesto se potevo acquistare un suo pezzo ma mi sembra che non abbia interesse, tu che ne pensi!
Gammel Kvinne, now it makes sense. It means old woman. ^^ So you started with some normal scrap iron, and inserted a piece of hardenable steel and forgewelded it. What kind of steel did you used for the inner part? Looks interesting for a beginner project. You learn scrolls, forge welding and tapering. Good idea.
Thank you, Mr. Ogren. 'Great work. How do you work with the different welding temperatures of wrought iron and high carbon steel? I want to try this and I need help on that point. Thanks again and may the good LORD bless and keep you.

Thank you! You have to be carefull not to burn the steel! Usually you can see if there are sparks flying from the piece. I think I did this in a gas forge which can be easier to control, since you can see the piece all the time!
Dear Nils Im 13 and i wanna become a blacksmith. Can you make a video what i need to make a wrought at home. And for example forging for beginners. Thanks for everything your biggest fan Noah ❤️🤘🏻👍👍👌

Hey Noah! Thank you so much, im honored to inpire you! I dont quite under stand the question, what do you mean by "wrought"?
Riktigt bra video :)

I just made today one of these knifes from an old car spring. It is a quick and funny way to get a functional knife.
Good Video, thanks for sharing.

@ Yeah. I made the mistake of going to whimsical with two I've forged and just undid all of that and made it plain, functional can comfortable

I like it, very simple build..👍
Now you need to make a video where you use your new knife! It'll be an endless cycle of using your newly forged tools! Haha!
It's good for you to try whatever you want to do. Not trying will get you nowhere. Real good video. Always try whatever you want.
I agree! Thanks fpr watching!

My heart hurts for you
Vadim, do you have old junkyards near you ?
Older vehicles had heavy iron frames & springs...👍
@@wayneeddy3261 60 kilometers away yes but I don't think I find really old stuff there. God damn germans and they productivity!
@@jeanpaulgartier3404 I know, I know... having good steel shouldn't be a bad thing.
Life of an toolmaker is sometimes weird
I love your videos, Nils. Keep em coming! :)
Thank you! Iäll do my best! i promise!
Good video. I enjoyed watching.

Awesome work man! Love the info at the end of the video as well. Quick question... when draw tempering the way you did do you do one time or twice?

I'm hopefully taking a forging class soon which will be about forging this knife. wanted to get a bit of a feel for how it might go. Great Vid !!!
Thanks! Good luck!
Where did you get your hammer? that thing's pretty
Made it myself! Check last video, i make it in that one
Great job Niels!
I love the project, but did you leave out your makers mark on purpose? Greetings from Germany!
I always forget it! Especially on knives

The steel is ss2090
The hammer looks more rounded at the corners now... or is it just my imagination?
Yeah, i fixed it a little bit.

Snygg kniv!
Vad etsade du i?
Det ser inte ut som järnklorid.
Det är järnklorid blandat med vatten
@ ok!
Då förstår jag. Måste nog ut och prova smida en sådan själv.
Really like that tempering method, simple and effective. To about what colour did you let the edge run?
I think its called straw in english, goldish
Thanks for the upload. Where did you get your hammer or did you make it?
I made it in my previous video!
@
I seen that after I posted my comment but didn't want to delete it.
Good video
