Excellent Review Meonicorn! You really captured so much of what the book is doing and your conflicts about the characters. Vanity Fair is one of my favorite novels and Becky Sharp one of my favorite characters- sometimes it is the deliciously evil that we enjoy reading about it, especially when they are contrasted with the almost too perfect Amelia. I love the authors voice and the humor and sarcasm of the book and you made me want to reread it all over again!

Thank you so much! I agree with everything you said about Vanity Fair, it has a very special vibe, and the author's voice is everything! haha XD I think I will definitely reread it some time later too!

Vanity Fair is one of my most anticipated classics as I really like that time period. Glad you liked it, great review!

Always enjoying Vanity Fair. Have read it 2 or 3 times. Becky is very wicked, while Amelia is too sweet!

Thank you so much for your comment! Vanity Fair is so brilliantly written with two distinctively different main characters.

I recently finished listening to the audiobook and I have been trying to understand why Miss Matilda Crawley seemed accepting of Sir Pitt Crawley proposing marriage to Rebecca but Matilda was beside herself and very upset that Rebecca and Rawdon were married. Was it perhaps the secrecy of the marriage or was it considered a "poor match" economically for Rawdon? If it was a poor match for Rawdon then wouldn't it have been a poor match for Sir Pitt Crawley?

I thought it was because Rawden was younger and also her particular favourite who she wanted to make an advantageous match.

Yes, very interesting review. One of my favorite books that I have read several times. You didn't mention the subtitle: A Novel Without a Hero. Did you know that the trio of lawyers Becky gets to defend herself - Burke, Thurtell, and Hayes-are named after prominent murderers of the time. I think the clear implication is that Becky murdered Jos. But I like her anyway. That is the genius of Thackeray. Since you liked this I would recommend another Thackeray novel, 'Barry Lyndon'.

I've meant to re-read this book for a long time. I have very fond memories of reading it in high school.

I haven't read it yet, but sometime in the past year I think I somehow picked up a free copy of it as a 30 hour audiobook so it's on my mind to read sometime ... you make a good case for reading it though! I love books with characters who I kind of like but who are constantly making me question that liking

Hahaha I hope you like this book when you get to it, Vanity Fair is so interesting and I still think about it often, and I feel like the character development is the strongest!
