Michael Caine said he did this as though he was acting with the Royal Shakespeare Company and not a bunch of puppets and it makes this version work *perfectly*.
@@childofbacchus He grounds it so well. Can't remember who said this, but they said he was told he could play around with the role a bit, then decided to "play it as serious as a car crash". Loved that.

According to basically everyone who has worked with the Jim Henson Studio, they make it really easy to take it "seriously." Jason Segal, despite having actually done some puppetry, said it's really weird working with them because before you know it, you forget about the guy running Kermit or whatever and you just talk to Kermit, even when you're between takes, it winds up having this reality of its own.
@@Spottedfeather Guessing you're a troll. The only people who don't like this song are soulless disney executives and people who don't understand character arcs and musical refrains.
I want a Beauty and the Beast muppet movie where everyone but The Beast is a muppet, and he's considered to be so hideous because he's just a normal human. And when he changes back at the end, he turns into a muppet.
People hate the live action remakes. But people love the muppets, despite their films being hit and miss. Their best films are definitely this and Treasure Island; and in both the lead actors treated the muppets as equals; Caine as fellow actors and Curry as a muppet himself. I can 100% see Disney making Muppet Remakes more successful than half their Live Action Remakes, and at a fraction of their budgets. But you need to find human leads who are willing to go all in as a serious actor or as a silly Muppet.
That's actually a pretty great idea. The best thing about the possibility of this is that Disney owns the rights to both the 1991 Beauty and the Beast and The Muppets, so they could even use the original songs. Also, that idea reminds me of that one Twilight Zone episode where the main character is considered horrendously ugly, but it's revealed at the end that she's actually beautiful and everyone else in the world has a pig head.
One of the greatest misconceptions about this story is that Scrooge changed because he was afraid of dying. Which I can kind of understand given the approach to the scene. I love that the way Michael Caine performed the role, it was clear that what he was truly afraid of was dying without love. He had no idea how miserable he actually was until the spirits gave him that context, and had no idea how much people actually hated him.
Just watched it for the first time in years and I'd kind of have to agree... compared to Treasure Island anyway, which I've watched way more and imo basically every song in that one is way better.
I can’t believe how much shit talking they did throughout this movie. Especially Adam. Seems to be getting too cynical for his own good. Same thing with the Superman trailer.
The cut song is one of the biggest tragedies because 1) it makes the ending reprise so much better and 2) Michael Cane KILLS this scene. It's the first big shift and it's magical.
One fun fact about this film is that the clothing is EXTREMELY historically accurate. They even have Mrs. Cratchit wearing a dress and bonnet that is about 8 years out of date to show that she is poorer and behind the latest fashions.
FYI: Kermit is not and never has been performed by Brian Henson. Brian directed this film, but Kermit was performed by Steve Whitmire right up to the mid 2010s, since then he was subsequently performed by Matt Vogel.
My pitch for Muppet Princess Bride is Fozzy as the grandfather reading the story to the grandson, Kermit as Westley, Miss Piggy as Princess Buttercup, Gonzo as Inigo Montoya, Bunsen and Beaker as Miracle Max and his assistant, and Jack Black as Count Rugen.
There's an episode of the Muppet Show where Kermit blows out a candle then turns to camera and goes "Think about it folks" Adam's reaction is justified
The "frog" creature is an Inkspot and the creepy green guy at Fred's Christmas party is Wander Mcmooch. Both are creatures from Fraggle Rock, many of which show up as townsfolk in this movie. Songs are PASSABLE!? How DARE you! I am really enjoying Adam appreciating the puppet work. Some people don't realize that certain actions are hard to do with puppets and thus it's special when it happens.
This has a special place in my heart. My sister is Autistic and she struggles to watch movies with other people. This is one of very very few exceptions. It's our Christmas Eve film. We all get to sit and enjoy a film together. It makes Christmas for me.

In most parodies, they make it look like it was the the third spirit forced Scrooge to change but really took all three. He needed to reflect on mistakes from the past, witness the issues in the present and warned of the consequences in the future.
IT IS THE BEST VERSION!!! The Narrator (Gonzo as "Charles Dickens") has so many ver batum lines from the text that this might be the closest any film adaptation is to the original story. Also, thanks. 🎄❤. -🍑
totally agree with Jay, best Christmas movie ever. Also, Adam is totally missing the whole point of the Scrooge/Belle scene where she sings. She had been waiting for years and every year he says there isn't enough. She realized nothing was ever going to be 'enough' for him, whereas she wanted to build their life together regardless of money. So she decided to get on with her life. And you are both wrong, the songs in this are fire.
Christmas Carol and Treasure Island are BY FAR the best Muppet movies. Not only are both surprisingly faithful to the source material, but are also hilariously meta in a way that was entirely ahead of their time.
Literally the best Christmas movie ever! I watch it every Christmas and I'm do glad you both enjoyed it. This video really brought the spirit of the season ❤ Thanks Jay and Adam for this
“ hey hey hey light the lamp not the rat, light the lamp not the rat!” Best line ever so good and yes I agree it is the best Christmas Carol movie of all time!
The Muppet Christmas Carol works so well because Michael Caine treated the role as having no muppets. Muppet Treasure Island works so well because Tim Curry treats himself and everyone else like they’re muppets and that’s why it works
Best version ever for sure! There are memes about remaking any movie using only one human and the rest Muppets, and THIS movie is the one I always point to as to how it could work because it is easily the best version of Christmas Carol. This is the ONLY Christmas movie that I watch every year. One More Sleep 'Til Christmas and It Feels Like Christmas have been on my Christmas playlist ever since this movie was released. Perfection.
I am still mad the cut Belle's song "The Love is Gone", it was so good, and the reprise at the end where they sing "The Love is Found" was nice as well, bookended very well. I wish i can watch that version on disney+, it sucks.
“It’s Tom Bombadil!” Given that Tom’s whole thing is existing utterly in the given moment and expressing pure enjoyment of life without ulterior agenda… yeah the spirit of the Present actually fits quite well.

My favorite version of 'A Christmas Carol.' Michael Caine did a phenomenal job; he really sells Scrooge's change of heart, and he makes you believe the Muppets are real people.
Okay re: your THOSE ARE REAL HANDS, apparently back in the original muppet show they just forgot to make hands for the chef for like a dozen episodes before they realized. It wasn’t a deliberate character choice. (After that? I can never remember if they kept that for some weird reason!🤦🏻♀️)

I still can't believe they cut the song 'When Love is Gone'. That scene loses all the emotional impact without it. I semi-understand why they did, but they should have just shortened it, & not cut it out completely. So happy they finally put it back in.
I've been waiting all day for this vid! Also, now knowing that Adam hasn't seen Muppets stuff in a while, I'd love for you guys to do a Muppet Treasure Island reaction sometime!
Best description I’ve ever read for why Christmas Carol and Treasure Island are so good is that Michael Caine treats the muppets as fellow thespians and Tim Curry treats himself as a muppet.
"Sometimes when we talk about the holidays and stuff, there's part of me that's like, 'man, I'm gonna send you three ghosts and make you love Christmas'--ya know?" Jay, i dunno if that's the lesson to take away from this classic tale...
Wow, I was not prepared to reconcile my deep seeded anger regarding the Sliders gate today. I haven’t thought about that show in many years, but dang if the mere mention of it from Jay and Adam didn’t bring all that anger right up to the surface. The squeaky gate gets fixed that very day?!?!

Gonzo’s delivery of “and tiny Tim…who did not die!” is iconic.
Agreed. But as a child, I asked myself, internally and silently, of course, “So he lived forever?!!!”
Actually from the book too.
appparently the editors were all worried about him, so he literally put "he did NOT die" in the book 😂

This is THE best christmas movie of all time, and honestly one of my favorite films ever. Its SO wel done
I agree with Jay, Great adaptation! I watch it every year. The uncut is the best!❤
