Chris is right about the origin of the term 'soap opera' - from the days of radio serials, they were sponsored by a variety of suds companies (including, back in the day, a company called Super Suds), but mainly, once TV came along, companies like Proctor and Gamble or Colgate. The 'opera' half of the term comes from the tendency in the 30s-50s or so to refer to melodramas as "opera" - for example, "Horse Opera" was a regular term for melodramatic westerns and 'Space Opera' for melodramatic sci-fi. (These terms were often pejorative and tended to mean "made for women," as in, not serous - George Lucas kind of reconfigured this by sometimes referring to Star Wars as a space opera.)

Absolutely no one I knew, that was a fan of the show when it aired, complained about it. But not everyone likes the same thing.
Micky, Chris is right about the name "soap operas". Per Wikipedia: "The term "soap opera" originated from radio dramas originally being sponsored by soap manufacturers."
Fantastic that you have returned and stronger than ever. A few things to remember about BTVS . One of the core principles of the show is the journey of Buffy to becoming a successful, independent, intelligent, and emotionally mature woman. She has fought the demons of society, the big ones, but now she is facing off against the hardest of all, everyday life , events, and people. Think of her 3 jobs… Willow and Tara place their values on Buffy with school. Buffy is mentally overwhelmed, so it is all moving too fast for her to keep up and understand . The device represents Buffy and her view of college. Everyone is moving at a learning and development speed that she can’t keep up with. He second would seem like a natural but it is not her limitations but fellow workers. Buffy has a strong sense of duty and moral character . She is pad to do a job and she has the moral obligation to do her best. Her fellow workers, society, want to slow the pace down for their personal benefit. They view the assigned job for their maximum pay and not the agreement they made with their employer. Then they lie about the demons, why? So they will place the blame on the Buffy to not damage their payroll padding and their egos. What is not mentioned is agin how she is failed by her “ friend”. Xander brings her to the job and then abandons her to fend for herself. He knows that Buffy killed demons, saved the men, and would be a great worker but…. To protect his standing and himself he fires Buffy. Standard actions from him. Finally the time loop. Retail is a time loop. The store, the duties , and customers are the same and a well run operation is a sea of conformity and repetition. That is not the personality of Buffy and is a death of her spirit. That is what makes this an underrated episode. Not one of Buffy’s friends , the ones by the way that took her from heaven, try to understand or help her ease the pain of life.Hence , Life Serial. Individual stories that tell the overall theme. Finally, The Trio. Why do they oppose Buffy. Superficially they want to satisfy their loathsome desires without working or achieving anything. They just want what they think will give them satisfaction. They are the smart ones, think the best of the best, that have never developed morally or with an understanding of ethics. They represent the gifted we applaud graduating at the top from the best but only want to give themselves fulfilled desires without the damage sone to others.Think about the genius sociopaths we have discovered in Silicone Valley, Financial Services ( Jeffrey Epstein, Madoff, etc,), Entertainment… basically the Trio ( I heard you say they could make a fortune with their creations) . Even if they were legit, they remain the same inside and remain people that would use. That is a lesson and journey that Buffy must navigate. People that cause is harm are not always a Big Bad. It is often a normal person that frustrates you at work, a low level bureaucrat that delays a permit because they can , or some elected official that gets a stupid law passed to help themselves at your expense. The trio are irritating, petty, but those people can become dangerous. Keep up the great reactions and I think your group is fantastic.
Season 6 isn't my favorite season not by a long shot, but there are great moments in it and the one great moment I can say about this season, its a great season to react to
I won't say who but there's a couple of guys on the couch who have a similar sense of humour as the Trio and were quite into Warren's whole sex-bot thing, disregarding the major creepiness of it 😬
I was watching along and nobody was into the sex-bot thing. If you're gonna throw accusation like that (I mean, Warren is literally the worst character you could compare anyone to), at least have receipts. Name, video, timestamp. But you won't do that, because there is no such timestamp, and you're just being an anonymous little 💩 stirrer online.
I’m so nervous for THE upcoming episode. I watched a reactor girl, eagerly awaiting her reaction to THE episode, and she hated it. Like hated hated it. What if they hate it too. It definitely needs multiple viewings to appreciate, but hate?
The musical episode is easily one of the most plot-advancing episodes in the whole series. It sets up sooo many plot points, and the fact that it did so by singing was a genius idea.
Hating the musical episode shows lack of taste to me. I HATE musical episodes but the btvs episode is one of the best episodes (not even the best musical episode, but one of the best tv episodes) that was ever shown on tv.
corn on tv was flawless, vs download in 28k dial up, or perhaps 56k V90 if they were lucky, but it would still take a 30 sek to 1 min to DISPLAY an image and you saw it load from top to bottom. You could dowload vido files ofc, but at that speed, could be a few hours for a 20 min corn clip and then it might not be what you wanted.......cable corn was perfection back in the day compared to dial up lol
Are there like bots that hate various Normies? I swear I see a hatey comment on every upload. But this one's a premium access video. Are y'all paying money to watch people you hate?
@@em8066 Just because someone has an opinion that differs from your does not make them a "bot". I see so many people these days that can't cope with differing opinions so they just reassure themselves that the person that disagrees with them must be a bot.
You guys know Danny Devito? Remember, this was 2002, porn on the internet was not what it is now, we all still bought Playboy (both magazine and DVDs).
Hey Rana, FYI, taking a leaf out of someone's book is correct. It's possibly more common in the UK than taking a page out of someone's book? Either way, what you said was just fine.
Little bit of historical context for "The Trio": so back in the day most people just considered them the comic relief. Buffy's life is an absolute trainwreck at this point & the nerds were a funny, zero stakes distraction from all that. At least for the opening half of the season anyway...
The two definitions of serial are: 1. Consisting of, forming part of, or taking place in a series. 2. Repeatedly committing the same offense and typically following a characteristic, predictable behavior pattern. These two definitions describe what The Trio are doing to Buffy's life during their tests. Willow has never really been one to understand Buffy, even not understanding being thrown into the deep end after taking time off is in character for her. I'm more surprised Tara either doesn't see it and/or doesn't acknowledge it. Of course The Trio are annoying. That's, so far, their function. A low tier threat after such a high tier threat was what the show needs, and what Buffy needs while depressed. I think the real reason people today are annoyed by them are because they see some of themselves in them (minus the evil), and don't want to acknowledge that fact. Willow and Tara not understanding school issues, Xander firing her, Anya critisizing the sale (which involves Giles because he didn't say anything about said sale and wasn't listening when she was saying something during the loop). There's a reason Buffy went to Spike. On top of being resurected by those four minus Giles (in reguards to life/jobs), they, plus Giles, are playing by human rules and she is constantly bogged down by Slayer issues they can only pretend to understand. Giles suggestion about policework for Buffy in helping combine being the slayer with a job is one of the few things that could work because there would be some excuse for her slayer behavior and Sunnydale is the only place that wouldn't care about her record and to be a police officer you can't have a record, juvie or adult. The magic bone references and the argument over the best 007 actor are the best moment of The Trio in this episode. Unfortunately, The Trio couldn't argue Daniel Craig. He wasn't Bond yet. At this point the current Bond was Pierce Brosnan. It's always interesting to see the reactions to what the demons are playing for.
The Trio are the best written psyop distraction technique in tv history. And they’re the best example of successfully one upping the devastation of a GOD: unassuming idiotic hoomanz. I freakin’ love em
Honestly I think the Trio are great because they're a lousy villain, and that's the whole point! Real evil usually isn't some supernatural wicked dude in badass leather. It's a bunch of jerks egging each other on with no regard to the consequences to others. Being so mundane banal makes them the most realistic villains of the series, and they really are still plenty dangerous.
A Buffywatch podcast I followed (Buffering the Vampire Slayer) raised a very good point once: if the Watcher’s Council can pay Giles, and *all of themselves,* for watching over the ONE GIRL IN ALL THE WORLD who risks her life on the daily for their ends, why can they not pay HER? Why is Slayer not a salaried position with health benefits, etc.
I think the fact that these are human villains is significant. After years of fighting vampires, demons and Gods. Buffy's biggest enemy is a Trio of nerds with a spell book. One of whom she saved in high school. (Ungrateful much) Buffy was in Heaven. She battled a God and sacrificed her life to save the world. Now her best friend brings her back to life using magic ripping her from heaven and these other idiots are torturing her. Season 6 Buffy's enemies are humans who are naive enough to think they can control magic. I know what lies ahead and will not spoil anything but be patient because there is a terrific payoff. Also episode 7 is just delightful and I cannot wait for you to watch it.
Another great reaction everyone cheers. If not too late just want to add my voice to the suggestion others have made that episode 7 of this season can be a bit longer in the YT edit? Mibbee too late n its already in the bag but if not, pretty please with sugar on top. The trio is annoying, but the pay-off will be worth it. There were a lot of complaints about season 6, but it contains some of my favorite episodes.
I really don't get what people mean by that ...and I've seen the serie multiple times. What the hell do you all think came out of this and what nice lol?
@pinkylittleme Season six was about growing up. And dealing with things that adults deal with. We actually had a viewing party for the musical when it aired. As a matter of fact, many of us would gather and enjoy quite a few episodes. Tabula Rasa had us laughing, and Smashed had gasping and hollering in approval. Absolutely no one I knew, that was a fan of the show when it aired, complained about it. But not everyone likes the same thing.
y'all giggled, but suraj was absolutely right at the beginning about the metaphor
Micky, Chris is right about the name "soap operas". Per Wikipedia: "The term "soap opera" originated from radio dramas originally being sponsored by soap manufacturers."
"Quick Jonathan, grab your magic bone!"😅
My favorite villains. Not a joke.
Finally! All 8 of you are back on the couch! Danny still doesn't talk much though 😆
Marketa your hair looks super cute here!!
The van horn was inept, but so hilarious. The nerd trio are a good ease-in for Buffy after her resurrection.
Rana was right at 28:52 - "Take a leaf out of someone's book" is correct.
Dying at Marketa at 1:35 lmao
14 episodes away from one of the darkest scenes to ever hit TV, and 2 episodes away from one of the best episodes of the Series.
Season 6 isn't my favorite season not by a long shot, but there are great moments in it and the one great moment I can say about this season, its a great season to react to
The trio is the best!
Fun fact that worker was hector from fast and furious and also the gangsta guy from Bruce almighty
The trio are fun in an intellectual and goofy way, especially around this time
Best. Villains. Ever.
2/3
This episode is making me so anxious.
I just hope the invisible Fbi kids won't gang up on Buffy in this bad moment
#Shipsailed.
I won't say who but there's a couple of guys on the couch who have a similar sense of humour as the Trio and were quite into Warren's whole sex-bot thing, disregarding the major creepiness of it 😬
👏🏾Say their names👏🏾Say their names👏🏾Say their names👏🏾 😂😂😂
I was watching along and nobody was into the sex-bot thing. If you're gonna throw accusation like that (I mean, Warren is literally the worst character you could compare anyone to), at least have receipts. Name, video, timestamp. But you won't do that, because there is no such timestamp, and you're just being an anonymous little 💩 stirrer online.
The themes in this season are so dark the trio are a necessary evil
I’m so nervous for THE upcoming episode. I watched a reactor girl, eagerly awaiting her reaction to THE episode, and she hated it. Like hated hated it. What if they hate it too. It definitely needs multiple viewings to appreciate, but hate?
Some people absolutely abhor musicals. It is what it is unfortunately.
If the Trio were around now, they would be the biggest Andrew Tate stans
And Musky boys
I don't think so. I think they would be debate bros but still sexist
No, they wouldn't, as Andrew Tate hates nerds and all the things they love actually.
I disagree I think they'd be on the far left and use 'everyone who doesn't agree with us is evil' as an excuse to take over the town.
Catherine zeta Jones....she dips beneath the lasers.....oh oh oh. Lol
"This mummy hand is no more. It is an ex-mummy hand."
It's pushing up daisies! It's joined the choir invisible!
corn on tv was flawless, vs download in 28k dial up, or perhaps 56k V90 if they were lucky, but it would still take a 30 sek to 1 min to DISPLAY an image and you saw it load from top to bottom. You could dowload vido files ofc, but at that speed, could be a few hours for a 20 min corn clip and then it might not be what you wanted.......cable corn was perfection back in the day compared to dial up lol
this is going to be a rough season for the normies.... and we are so close to the final season
I also hate the trio, but I love the conclusion of their arc.
Just FYI... In regards to resurrection, a natural death and a supernatural death are two completely different things..and there are rules.
Mickey’s back and already complaining
Are there like bots that hate various Normies? I swear I see a hatey comment on every upload. But this one's a premium access video. Are y'all paying money to watch people you hate?
@@em8066No, not a bot lol. I just want to watch a reaction without him complaining about the episode length!
@@em8066Sure. Everyone you disagree with is a bot. Cus that’s how the world works. Take the rose colored glasses off and accept what is.
@@jaylaedits1867 How about a video without YOU complaining?
@@em8066 Just because someone has an opinion that differs from your does not make them a "bot". I see so many people these days that can't cope with differing opinions so they just reassure themselves that the person that disagrees with them must be a bot.
You guys know Danny Devito? Remember, this was 2002, porn on the internet was not what it is now, we all still bought Playboy (both magazine and DVDs).
I knew Marketta would hate the Trio. I love themm
It's a tradition among reactors to go on autopilot mode and dislike the Trio, mostly, because they're not your classical everyday Buffyverse villans.
What if Joyce had actually come back as a silhouette? A living shadow? That might have been fun.
Would she know the evil that lies in the hearts of men?
The Rock (Sean Connery) is amazing and probably my favourite straight action movie. Glad to hear it mentioned.
Hey Rana, FYI, taking a leaf out of someone's book is correct. It's possibly more common in the UK than taking a page out of someone's book? Either way, what you said was just fine.
I assume it's a local spell. It has a definite area of effect like time spells in D&D or Pathfinder
Little bit of historical context for "The Trio": so back in the day most people just considered them the comic relief. Buffy's life is an absolute trainwreck at this point & the nerds were a funny, zero stakes distraction from all that. At least for the opening half of the season anyway...
I like that new look on Mickey
The actor for Giles wanted to spend more time with his family in this season so he’s pulling away from a main character
Marketa's hair is amazing 💃
Nobody recognizes Noel Gugliemi (Fast and the Furious) as the construction guy. Filmed same year too.
The Trio are the best written psyop distraction technique in tv history. And they’re the best example of successfully one upping the devastation of a GOD: unassuming idiotic hoomanz. I freakin’ love em
Buffy should take the Luke Cage: Hero for Hire route where she pro bono super heros for most people but gets paid by rich rescuees.
Cannot wait for Episode 7!
I was just waiting to see your reaction to the kitten poker scene😂
I think the fact that these are human villains is significant. After years of fighting vampires, demons and Gods. Buffy's biggest enemy is a Trio of nerds with a spell book.
One of whom she saved in high school. (Ungrateful much)
Buffy was in Heaven.
Episode 7, followed closely by 8
Another great reaction everyone cheers.
If not too late just want to add my voice to the suggestion others have made that episode 7 of this season can be a bit longer in the YT edit? Mibbee too late n its already in the bag but if not, pretty please with sugar on top.
Wont lie though, the full reaction on patreon for that episode may entice me to sign up for a months access as I love that episode so much & have enjoyed rewatching Buffy along with all you guys thus far!
