I made this shield using pine wood which was from roof structure.
The planks are 8 mm thick, so whole shield is 16 mm thick. Shield diameter is 80,5 cm which is historically accurate although the measures varied from 75 - 90 cm.
I used metal thumbtacks to attach the eco leather around the rim.
The leather is sewed by my father :)
The cloth is actually my old bed sheets (linen)
The shield boss is a cheap dog bowl from stainless steel, I used hydrochloric acid to achieve aged look. The bowl was shaped by my neighbour Vittorio who is a metal worker.
And also thanks to my brother Andrea and his wife Barbara for helping with shield :)

What about Krato's' shield from God of War 4?
Maybe 😊
Bro, im sticking wit u in the apocalypse
Come over as soon it starts 🤘🍻🍺
@@EpicWorkshop is he there yet
Still waiting..
@@EpicWorkshop maybe soon, depends on how coronavirus mutates
Here in Istria we have no new cases for 2 weeks already 🤘
The Zigzag stiching on the fake leather is so authentic. The actual decoration is the only authentic part about it.
Hahaha 😂😉
Epic! I'm spending some time watching multiple videos on how to make a viking shield. Yours looks incredible. Even though I'm trying to make it look as authentic as possible so I might not wanna use screws.
+Forsaken Thank you bro 😎 😊 Yeah I used screws because it is on wall (most of his time) so it is not visible, I even planned to take off the handle but then friends cannot hold it when they visit and want to take picture with it😂😂😂
Moris
Haha well if it's just for decoration I can see your point. Well mine would be used for actual fighting... With dull weapons of course XD
I gotta say your video is the first one where I see two layers of planks being used. It kind of makes sense to me, because you can have the planks of the two layers crossing each other, which would prevent a weapon cutting deeper into the shield because it hits right between two planks.
Also it's the first video of you that I watched and you got a new subscriber XD
+Forsaken 😉 yeah, they actually used laminated shields correctly because of that: grain running in both ways which makes the shield much more resistant and durable to breaking, splitting...
I don't use it for practice fight 😂😂 but I tested it, my friend was hitting it with an splitting axe (i was holding it) and it works but I would not like to be hit in shield boss region hahahah ✊
Welcome aboard bro 😎
Moris
This is such a good way to get the wood effect without having to do a ton of sanding on the face
+Green Cupcakes Glad you like it 😄😊🤘
I am blown away by what you all have created! Such ingenuity using other tools for different purposes, like the ball pien hammer as a kind of anvil! Genius! Thank you so much for sharing!
+Del Short Thank you bro 😄
From the few videos I've seen and pics and such..you viki's put alot of effort into this sheild !! Thanks
Great job. I wish you had shared the template for the image.
Thank you Bro 💚 You can find it online 🤘 just google "Fenrir design" it should be first 😉
Excellent! Looks awesome and you clearly had fun making it, which is what it is all about. Thanks for sharing!
Mikael DeAngelo Thank you Mikael, yeah it was a lot of fun :) now it's hanging in the shop and looks amazing :)
I love that the shield has Fenrir on it!
+Shaman of the Wolf Your name says it all 😄
Thank you bro 🤘🍺

A Skoll & Hati themed shield would be really cool!!
Yeah 🤘🍻 chasing the sun and moon
@@EpicWorkshop absolutely! You guys over there have some significant skills. Im sure you could come up with something awsome!!
Thanks Bro 🤘
They told me that if ever I needed a shield, I should look to you. You did not disappoint. There will always be a place for you in my Clan
Hahah Thank you Bro 🤘🍺 For Valhalla!!!
and our Honoured dead
Don't get me wrong that is the most beautiful shield I have seen yet on the Internet but I would have liked to see the boss made from a piece of sheet metal instead of a bowl but I am in awe of the craftsmanship of everything else
+Theswaggeringwombat I would also like to have a real boss on there but I don't have place to forge (yet) but I tried to make my own but it didn't work out :( so I used dog bowl which looks amazing for 2 dollars and not 40 dollars for decent handmade shield boss.
Thank you for your comment :)
~M~
“Fenrir” I love it
+Danner Thanks bro :)
Complete with blood splatter! Too cool. A craftsman and an artist; not the same things. Great work!
Thank you :) I finished art school for sculptor ;)
Cheers
Moris
Looks great! I normally don't like Viking shields because the painting is usually just a bisection or quadsection of 2 colors. The dragon makes this awesome!
Thank you Bro 🤘 I am also not fond of too simple things haha I always over-complicate things 😊
Be cool to make one that has kevlar on the back or in the middle somehow. Imagine a shield-wall of bullet proof Viking shields ?!?!
Hahaha highly needed in those times 😅 it would be interesting with center grip 😂
I don't understand why this only has a few thousand views right now. This is awesome
Thank you for kind words Austin :) But I am amazed that it has 3,466 views :3
So beautiful. Make's me proud to be a Viking, like's my ancestors.
+Bonnie Spanos thank you bro 😎
Moris
Epic Workshop you mean "sis".
+Bonnie Spanos oh Bonnie is your real name nice name btw 😊 yeah Sis is okay 👌 😄

Epic Workshop 😊
You need to make yourself a push stick! Watching you rip that lumber was nerve racking.
+Matt F I have 3 of them ;) ahh I am aware of what I am doing, but one day I will cut off my arm 🙋 :p
Awesome project, it came out great! Loved the fact that you converted the screws into nails!
Scrap wood City Thank you Dimitris, yeah it was my father idea, they came out looking awesome and handmade pinned.
Had me right up to the surgered leather, screws and bowl for the boss, honestly looks like you have the skills to have made the boss your selves. Still a good video, just some constructive feed back
Thanks, I unfortunately don't have tools nor space to forge
It would be cool if you mounted this on a jeep wrangler where the back spare tire would be or maybe covering the tire
On spare tire it would look epic !!! Send me a jeep and I will make a video 😂😂😂
I'm always amazed at how sharp your chisels are
+Joey Morris Hahah Thanks bro 😉 😊 😂🍺
Wow! Beautiful! How I wish I could have one… man it would be a dream come true! And the craftsmanship that went into this piece is amazing!
Thank you Nick 🤘😍
That village looks pretty plentiful
Hahah 🤘🍻
i love that you put fenrir in norse on there
+oliver hardy Of course 😊 😄 🍺 🤘
Amazing job. Only thing that ruins it all is that bowl...
+PrimyFritzellz Thank you bro 😊😄
Yeah it is true 😥😝
Hahahahah i need to get real one 😊😄
Moris
ahh a shield like like that makes me want to put a dragon head on the front of my bass boat and go fishing and raiding down the tennesse river!
+Ranger Minsc Hahahahah That's awesome!! I am coming with!!!
Skal!
i dont know how far we will get but it will be a party either way!
+Ranger Minsc Hahahahah \m/ I first need to get to tennesse river...from Croatia.. see ya in one year :'D
I've though about putting a dragon head on my 55 Sears aluminum boat. It would be fitting, since she's named Lagertha's Revenge.
i’ll tame the dragon.
great, now i have to build like 6 of these to line my apartment to make it look like a mead hall. for reasons.
+freeman621 Best decision ever bro 😎
Have fun making them 😊🤘🤘🤘
That's cool it says fenrir and has a sweet wolf on it.
+Jared Montgomery Thank you Jared 😊 yeah I also think that 🤘
Probably the best vikings shield I have seen on UA-cam!
+Christopher ROOSE Thanks bro 😉 😊 🍺
Moris
Ok took me a while, but finally made my wood sheild, need to send you a pic and see what ya think
+David Good That's awesome David:) send it via Instagram :D
Moris
I wish, I really wish I saw someone making shield without the modern tech and tools, or at least saying or explaining how vikings did it back then and how to put it together. It's still a nice video though. Cheers!
It would have been completed with saws, hatchets, and chisels all of which vikings had in there day.
Im glad you made it say somwthing instead of putting random runics on it
I did some research and from some of the few remaining roten shields and some older scripts they are saying that most viking sheilds actually had a taper in around the center it could be almost an inch thick and around the edge it would be less then a quarter inch thick.
+josh greg yeah correct, but making the taper is too hard so i didn't make it 🤔 but I also study every project before making it 😉😊
Moris
Epic Workshop then you know they didnt use screws lol but even when I look it doesnt say if the taper is on the front or the back or if both sides taper inward.
+josh greg I know but try to make one yourself and then you will see that it is hard to make it realistic 🤔
That's an impressive craftsmanship.
Thank you Bro 🤘❤️
do you forge metal? and if so are you ever going to make and battelaxe or sword, or anything Viking related out of metal?
WTFnorway Official my friend has an anvil and we tried to forge arrowhead once but we were interrupted by neighborhood but now we can take anvil and drive it to my place where is no people living nearby so we may try to forge something I would definitely want to make something viking out of metal :) If you have Instagram you can write me there :) Epic workshop is my name
Have a nice day :)
I wanna see the back of it next time
Since I use it as a wall decoration, it is very very simple 😂
A shield worthy of a King
+King Ragnar Ohoo when king says that :D
I like the Fenrir design you put on there. I'm building my own skjöldr and I'm about halfway done now. I will thank you because I'm using a style and design very much like yours. Thank you again for the ideas and the design. For the decoration of the skjöldr I'm actually painting the curved block with the colors of my family crest.
+EDEN PEACEKEEPER Awesome!! 🤘🍺🤘😘
This is great. I really love it!
Thank you for kind words bro, you should definitely make one :)
Cheers
Moris
basically it's a work made in family. . i love it! !
+Andres Suarez Yeah hahaha me, brother and my father were building this (mostly me but :p)
+Andres Suarez Thank you for kind comment bro :) Have a nice day :D
Moris
Did I see the steps correctly? 2 layers of the 8mm boards, laid cross ways, then cloth glued to boards and then background paint on the cloth?
Why the cloth? To smooth the surface?
And thanks for sharing, it looks amazing!
Yep, all correct, it is easier to draw on cloth and it also gives a bit of strength to the shield 😉 Thank you Bro
I love the laughing when squirting the glue
😂😂
I really like the work this guy does
Zachary Richardson And that guy is super grateful for your very nice words :) Thank you bro :D
Have a nice day
Moris
True nords never back down!
Awesome video, although ideally the paint would hide the wood grain. You didn't want your opponent to know which way the wood grain runs since this makes it easier to crack the shield (even when it's double boarded). But what the heck, it just looks so epic with the grain showing :P
Thank you Bro 🤘
I used to be an adventurer like you..
But what happened then? 😅
goshh... this was absolutely STUNNINGLY GORGEOUS 😍😍😍😍🤩🤩🤩🤩😍😍😍😍💖💖💖💖💖💖✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
🖤🤘🍺
This means a lot i came from vikings so making my own shield means a lot so im subscribing thank you
Thanks Bro 🤘🍺
I don’t like the fake blood but I really like everything else :D
thanks
I Will do one myself and pick one of the gods as protection on my crest
Awesome! See ya on the battlefield 🤘
I'm far from an expert, but putting the top layer of planks in the opposite direction of the bottom layer of planks seems like a really good idea. As I said, I'm far from an expert, but it just seems like it's more structurally sound that way, but I don't know.
+Axel Dwits Yeah it is called lamination 😉 vikings also used lamination, because it is much harder to split the shield 😉
I guess Fenrir works since the dog bowl was used for the boss
Hahahahahahah 😂😂😂 hahahaahah amazing comment 😂😂
Cool fantasy shield!
Thank you Bro ! Saved me from friend bashing me with an woodcutters axe...
Love it! Except for the shield boss. That should have been hammered out of sheet metal. To see the effort made of using planks to make the round, glue & canvas, wooden grip, and a fantastic paint job, only to turn a dog bowl and some screws into a boss and rivets. Regular nails would have made easier and more authentic rivets. The holes for the screws/rivets are too close to the edge of the wood for this shield to be effective long term.
Thanks, I don't have place nor tools to make the boss
Beautiful shield. Working on one myself. You did a great job ! Thanks for sharing.
The Redsmith Thank you for nice words :D yeahh when you make it send me the pictures to Instagram if you want :)
Epic Workshop is name on Instagram
have a nice day
Epic Workshop Sure. I will post the video on my channel as well. 😊🖒
The Redsmith yeah even better bro :)
When making my shield I took an aluminum dog bowl and pounded into a boss!
Yep 😉
:D
Really beautiful. I've been thinking of doing a project like this and this video is very motivating
Thank you Bro 🤘 you have to do it 🍻 you will love it 😉
Why would anyone dislike this video, it's awesome!!
Thanks a lot 🤘🍺
Nice work with the chisel!
Thanks Bro 🤘🍺
By far one of the better videos I've watched on this. You Sir just got my sub.
+Will Hunter Thanks bro 😎 😊 I am very proud of last video I made 😂😂
Moris
Good use of a dog bowl 👌🏻
Thanks Bro 🖤 I would like to make new one with real boss this time, now I have bit better budget for videos thanks to Patreons 😊🍻
Beautiful. so beautiful
Thank you Bro 💚🍺
What is the purpose of putting the cloth on vs just sanding and painting the wood?
It is easier to paint on cloth and it makes it stronger 😉🤘
Svaka cast momci!!! What a beautiful piece of work!
+Gotislav Vasiljkovic Hvala :)
I really enjoy all your videos! Just completed this in foam-board ... quick & easy, mostly faithful to your design ... bit less work - I have a PDF with templates & instructions if interested. Skål !!
Thanks Bro 🤘 Awesome 💚
@@EpicWorkshop - Hey, Tremendous work! .. I don't always open up my wallet but just became a patron -sorry, lowest tier for now ; have to spread it around ;-)
If you want to see my foamboard 'copy' of your excellent shield you can download it from:

You should make a Celtic long sword
Did anyone else realize that the song is also the song from Mount and Blades: Warband?
BANNERLORD IS OUT!!1!11!!!!!!1!11
I have it 😉
Man this would be sick to build except I don't have wood, I don't think I have leather, I don't think I have pretty much anything for this build except for maybe a thing or two.
Take your time, slowly but surely you will collect all you need to make it 🤘💚
@@EpicWorkshop ❤️💚❤️
Did the vikings have arm straps on the back to help with holding their shields? It seems like that would help in combat
Nope it is center grip only, they used the shield as a weapon too. It is actually very usable 😉
@@EpicWorkshop Fascinating... And a very good build!
Thanks Bro 🤘 Check a bit on yt about fighting with viking shields. 😉
@@EpicWorkshop Will do!
Could you give me more informations about the moment when you had to make the shield boss ? For how long did you let the acid on the paper towel ?
Until done, you can check it to see the progress here and there and then adjust how much you want, I don't remember how long it took for mine :/ sry
Great job! Subscribed.

Nice job. Great painting. Only the screws in the handle are not so nice.
+Die Schildmacher Thanks bro, I use it for wall hanger only (unfortunately 😂😂) so it is impossible to see screws 😉
That looks great, but why not just paint directly onto the wood?
Hmm i think they put fabric on to connect everything together, it really inproves the sturdines that much more 🤘 plus it is easier to paint on fabric, like canvas 🍺
@@EpicWorkshop Good point
Shield looks awesome! But how did you trace Fenrir onto the shield with all the intricate curves and such? Do you have a printable pdf or something that you used?
Thank you 😊 I drew it directly to the shield, I used a photo on phone I think. I don't have printable pdf but you can find that design on google: Fenrir design 🤘
I wish he'd actually explain what he's doing and what techniques he's using. dude, what kind of wood, what length, width and what circumference does the shield need to be? what kind of glue and paint?
Levi Thomas You have everything in description, and on internet :)
and this is not how to but I am willing to help
Cheers
~M~
Using a metal bowl as the guard I applauded you for. That was genius
Hahah it did the trick kinda haha 😊 but I want to make a shield with tapered edges, real leather and real boss
Awesome shield! Would look great in my wood shop. This may be a future project for me!
+Build Stuff with AJ Hahah Thanks It definitely would look awesome 😄
I'm starting to make my own shield today. It'll be a bitlighter than yours. Diameter 80cm, Thickness of planks 6mm so it will be 12 mm.
Hope it won't be too heavy for a fight^^
+Forsaken Awesome!!
Great choice of measures, it will be perfect 👌
🍺
Good to hear!^^ How did you make the painting? Did you draw this impressive combination of fenrir and knots just by hand? Or did you make some templates? I suck at drawing so without templates I'd have a problem :D
+Forsaken I found a picture and redraw it on my shield 😉 enlarged it by hand, so no templates sorry
Just try to do it and remember to step away from shield about 3 meters and look at it, because if you are close to it you will make a distorted picture 😉
Have fun and take your time!
Moris
Thanks for the advice :)
+Forsaken Glad to help bro
This is an awesome shield!! I had a lot fun making it and the bearded axe.
Ohhh awesome! Could you send me the photos of it 😊 Thank you 🍺🤘

I will most def make one of these to decorate my interior ! Great job mate, as always if I may say so ! :)
+Le Cobra Awesome :D I absolutley love it for decoration on wall in my wood shop :) good luck and thanks :3
Really EPIC build! I was wondering if you use any special foot attachments for your sewing machine when you were sewing the leather border, if so what kind of attatchment? Great video, you have made a subscriber this day.
+Collihan93 Thank you for kind comment bro 😊 😎 I used the pedal "for power" like in a car
It is standard with newer sewing machines
Btw my father was sewing
should clarify this is a project shield not a reproduction or era accurate model. . . looks like it was fun and you made something great job :)
+sikosis999 I think it is pretty clear that this is a reproduction, pretty sure Vikings didn't have inox dog bowls...
Thanks bro 🤘🍺
bad ass.... just like vikings are!
CGCxXSMALLSXx Thank you :D

That is amazing and the fenrir design
+Wolves heart Thank you bro your name says it all 😄 😊
Excellent. Looks like a fun project;
Thank you William 🤘🍻 it was 😊
love when you laugh at the sound of the wood glue hahahah
What colors do you use for the metal finish? I know you use a silver/gray-like finish and top it off with a bunch of black, but specifics would be nice to know!
+Einherjar Skadisson I would recommend newer video, better technique 😉 tho in this video I used hydrochloric acid to put some patina on stainless steel 😂
Moris
Epic Workshop Thank you so much for the quick response! I'll definitely check out your later work, but I wonder, have you listed what items / tools and equipment you're using? I currently do not really own anything to do any work with wood, except for a few knives and sandpaper. However I'm interested in getting into woodcrafting!
+Einherjar Skadisson Nope, just spent many hours about woodworking on YT, blogs and other info and you will probably know everything and even more 😄
Moris
Did vikings actually use cloth or did you do it to make design easier to paint?
I personally think they did it, It gives a lot of strength to the structure and it protects against weather + paint layer. Animal glue was common and if they didn't use cloth they probably used animal hide on same purpose. When you look at the ships they built I doubt, that a shield, which was their primary tool of protection was just a crude thing made flimsy. It had to be strong, light and flexible enough to withstand the impact of enemy whacks and blows 🤘🍺
Btw, It is definitely easier to paint on fabric.. that's for sure haha 😂
Moris
Hey guys, awesome work! Can you please tell me what kind of paint is this? Textile or wood stain or something? Thanks in advance!
Thanks, it is Acrilic paint 🤘
Haha, awesome. I loved how you used thumbtacks there. Been following your work for a while now and I reckon I'm going to keep coming back.
+OGWARF1 Thank you bro :) yeah those thumbstacks are pretty handy, I also used them on a helmet ;)
You are awesome :D Thanks for your support :)
Moris
Just gave you a pledge on Patreon ^^
+OGWARF1 I just saw it :) Thank you :D
Awesome video! I'm currently in the process of making my own shield (using both your video and tips from colleagues of mine) and I was wondering; why did you use screws over nails for the boss?
+Stanovich That us great be sure to send me some pictures via Instagram when you make it 😊😄😍 I didn't have those nails with big heads, and also because of look, I liked idea of mushrooming the head of the brass screw to make it look like "hand made" to give it more man made look, I hope you understand 🤔
But If I ever make another one I will probably try to forge my own nails and shield boss 😄😎
Have a nice day bro 😊
Moris
Ah, makes sense. Thanks for the reply and a nice day to you too ^_^
+Stanovich 😊
