    I made this shield using pine wood which was from roof structure.
    The planks are 8 mm thick, so whole shield is 16 mm thick. Shield diameter is 80,5 cm which is historically accurate although the measures varied from 75 - 90 cm.
    I used metal thumbtacks to attach the eco leather around the rim.
    The leather is sewed by my father :)
    The cloth is actually my old bed sheets (linen)
    The shield boss is a cheap dog bowl from stainless steel, I used hydrochloric acid to achieve aged look. The bowl was shaped by my neighbour Vittorio who is a metal worker.
    And also thanks to my brother Andrea and his wife Barbara for helping with shield :)

    The Zigzag stiching on the fake leather is so authentic. The actual decoration is the only authentic part about it.

    Epic! I'm spending some time watching multiple videos on how to make a viking shield. Yours looks incredible. Even though I'm trying to make it look as authentic as possible so I might not wanna use screws.

    • @EpicWorkshop
      @EpicWorkshop  7 років тому

      +Forsaken Thank you bro 😎 😊 Yeah I used screws because it is on wall (most of his time) so it is not visible, I even planned to take off the handle but then friends cannot hold it when they visit and want to take picture with it😂😂😂

    • @Trailerglotzer
      @Trailerglotzer 7 років тому +2

      Haha well if it's just for decoration I can see your point. Well mine would be used for actual fighting... With dull weapons of course XD
      I gotta say your video is the first one where I see two layers of planks being used. It kind of makes sense to me, because you can have the planks of the two layers crossing each other, which would prevent a weapon cutting deeper into the shield because it hits right between two planks.
      Also it's the first video of you that I watched and you got a new subscriber XD

    • @EpicWorkshop
      @EpicWorkshop  7 років тому +1

      +Forsaken 😉 yeah, they actually used laminated shields correctly because of that: grain running in both ways which makes the shield much more resistant and durable to breaking, splitting...
      I don't use it for practice fight 😂😂 but I tested it, my friend was hitting it with an splitting axe (i was holding it) and it works but I would not like to be hit in shield boss region hahahah ✊
      Welcome aboard bro 😎

    I did some research and from some of the few remaining roten shields and some older scripts they are saying that most viking sheilds actually had a taper in around the center it could be almost an inch thick and around the edge it would be less then a quarter inch thick.

    • @EpicWorkshop
      @EpicWorkshop  7 років тому

    Love it! Except for the shield boss. That should have been hammered out of sheet metal. To see the effort made of using planks to make the round, glue & canvas, wooden grip, and a fantastic paint job, only to turn a dog bowl and some screws into a boss and rivets. Regular nails would have made easier and more authentic rivets. The holes for the screws/rivets are too close to the edge of the wood for this shield to be effective long term.

    Did vikings actually use cloth or did you do it to make design easier to paint?

    • @EpicWorkshop
      @EpicWorkshop  4 роки тому

      I personally think they did it, It gives a lot of strength to the structure and it protects against weather + paint layer. Animal glue was common and if they didn't use cloth they probably used animal hide on same purpose. When you look at the ships they built I doubt, that a shield, which was their primary tool of protection was just a crude thing made flimsy. It had to be strong, light and flexible enough to withstand the impact of enemy whacks and blows 🤘🍺
      Btw, It is definitely easier to paint on fabric.. that's for sure haha 😂
