  • What does Jordan Peterson mean when he says you need to clean your room? His advice has become a bit of an internet meme recently, but behind the simple words lies a deeper concept.
    In this animated video we explore the meaning behind his famous catch phrase encouraging young people to take responsibility and tidy their room

    -It is not transformative in nature.
    -I only used bits and pieces of videos to get the point across where necessary.
    Please post this in The Jordan Peterson Sub Reddit!
    Jordan Peterson argues the act of cleaning your room is an act that will spark a sequence of events, it is a catalyst for change. If one can clean their room, it is a way of confronting your demons. Your room often reflects your mental state.

    For those who are struggling still to clean and then beautify your room, here are a few things I have done to beautify my room whilst poor. I am a certified artist and college teacher, btw. :D
    1) buy a couple art books at a thrift store. Like I got a huge Van Gogh one for like $3. Then cut out the pictures that you like best. Frame them now and hang them! If you have no frames then tape them to a larger piece of colored paper that will create a border.
    2) Line your bookshelves with pretty or cool fabric. My daughter and I were at a craft store. They were selling the sample swatches of upholstery fabrics that were gorgeous! So we bought a bunch! If you don't have a craft store in your town, line your book shelves with aluminum foil. I've done that. You'll be surprised at how good it looks!
    3) The dollar store!! Don't eschew the Dollar Tree for decorative items. I've gotten candles, wall decorations, etc... from the Dollar Tree. They had these foil cut out things that were shaped like tree branches with a few leaves. Arranged just so, it came out really nice.
    4) If you have a really stunning dress or jacket, hang it on a wall! Like in "To Wong Fu Love Julie Newmar," the guys decorated their little shabby motel with their clothing, scarves, and jewelry. I had some blue jean shorts that got a hole. I patched it with some paisley upholstery fabric and it was good. But soon a couple more holes appeared. So I found some more really cool fabric. Soon the shorts were half patches! It was 1993, the grunge days, and I lived in Seattle. I got sooo many compliments! Years later those shorts were on my wall!
    Does anyone else have budget minded creative decorative suggestions??

      darkmaitri that’s good to help people out but I think the cleaning your room thing is about you beautifying it yourself. It’s an act of self empowerment for you to get your room in order.

    • @darkmaitri
      @darkmaitri 4 роки тому +6

      @@obviousgreyman Yes. You're absolutely right. But there was some comment thread where the commentators were saying they didn't have enough money and didn't know how to decorate, etc. So I thought I'd relay some things I'd tried to decorate with on the cheap. I think it is fantastic to push oneself to new insights and actions. I don't think we should abandon learning from others in doing so. We must at times be humble and hear about what others have experienced who have traveled a path before we did, so that we may learn and maybe not commit the same mistakes they did. Or do make them! But each person learning a little from the preceding one, may get a little farther than that one, with their blessing. I think what is key is awareness of ourself and our decision to do something. We get advice or listen to others' stories. But we add our own self expression to a thing done no matter if we try to even copy someone else! It is still us doing our version, our interpretation of what they do. ya dig? I love reveling in sharing with someone. To find commonality and feel kinship is a blessing in this swirl of chaos. Peace...

    • @obviousgreyman
      @obviousgreyman 4 роки тому

      darkmaitri I agree to a point, I’m certainly not anti learning or claiming that we can’t share ideas or anything I’m just saying I think the whole point of the exercise is to not exactly work like the real world but to be a tool for self betterment and to help people gain a bit of confidence and feeling of power and control in their lives. I’m all for inspiration in that but ultimately it needs to come from the individual not from outside sources simply for the sake of this exercise, I think for almost any other circumstance you’re correct. I think we’re basically on the same page though I’m not criticizing it was just an observation on my part.

      SJWs, like Nazis, cannot be reasoned with. Like them, they are driven by their own self-hatred and inability to accept their own faults so they search for it in others to deflect the shitty feelings they've lived with all their lives. Just cowards who can't face their own existential dread head on.

    3:25 to 4:35 literally happened in my home today. I took some old junk out of my closet that didn't belong to me, along with my deceased older sister's Air Force uniforms. I have moved on so I put them in my younger sister's closet to spare my mother some grief and to give her and my youngest sister the chance to do what they want with them. She asked me to move the junk out of the hallway because it was blocking something. I moved it into my mother's room and this angered her. Then she noticed my deceased sister's uniforms in her closet and angrily questioned me about them. She asked why l couldn't just leave all of this stuff in the closet since my mother plans to move into this room once I move out. I told her honestly that I pay rent here and I want my room as neat as possible. She gave me a disgusted look and sort of shamed me for putting my dead sister's uniforms in her closet despite the fact that I've held onto them with the other piles of junk, that don't belong to me, since August of 2018. It is eery how true some of this man's words are.

    Shit I used to have to clean the whole house by myself when I was 10 years. Taking out the garbage. Taking care of the dishes and wiping the counters down. Sweeping and mopping, vacuuming carpets. I learned how to actually wash a carpet at 14. I even painted the kitchen including my own bedroom. I was the man of the house even though I was just a kid. I was condition and programmed early to organize everything. Even my mess.i learned that when you feel chaos internally you tend to project that onto your personal space. You let go, you start losing focus and discipline. And the chaos just gets worse because you pathologically kept choosing to let you room go by being a slob. So rather laying in your unmade bed mindlessly changing channels on your tv. Get up, and get to work! When everything in your room is organized and in its rightful place. You feel together in your head, your anxiety is low, you actually feel a sense of clarity. And an organized room and clean home definitely can say a lot about a person

      I was expecting some really ignorant take on the matter, but you actually make a really compelling point, thanks

    too bad my family doesn't have individual rooms for everyone. kitchen, living room and bedroom. thats all. i clean the bedroom, some hours later its back to what it was. I clean the living room, and the day after that the room is back to what it was. I clean the kitchen, after a meal it is again not clean and tidy. I dont even care anymore and just clean the things that my parents demand the most and leave the rest because it's not even worth doing it. i just got to wait untill I move out, then I'll be the most arranged person of all my relatives.

    Great complimentary animation to Peterson's talk! I do have one slight piece of constructive criticism. I'm not sure that the illustration that you use of the "terrible parent/father" between 3:23 and 4:14 is very appropriate. I think so because it's quite generalizing, demeaning, and hateful and that by that nature it comes in contradiction to Peterson's statements of getting along with your family. In summary, I don't think that illustration is very helpful. My advice is to maybe instead of that illustration put an illustration of something akin to someone's demeaning face or some sort of ugly expression or maybe even a ridiculing laughter. This criticism is only meant with kind regards! Thank you for contributing your creativity to Peterson's talk!

    i think he's going way to deep into this concept tbh, I don't see how having a tidy room is gonna change my life

      It's simplifying what many can imagine as impossible tasks.
      For example, a far person wants to lose weight, and blames external forces for them being that way, but perhaps its their environment, or a student blames inequality for their bad grades when in fact they haven't taken the self care to ensure they have a proper place to actually study.
      That's a personal perspective, but let's look at a broader perspective "global warming ", there are alot of advocates for change, but how many of them have actually structured their lives to suit their mantra, or others that fight financial inequality but still buy cheaply made goods by companies that facilitate said inequality.
      Start small, work you're way up. Make changes that better fit the life you wish to create for your self and this will build habits that will then translate to larger issues you are passionate about.

      My 2 cents for what it's worth : before you make your bed shake out and air out your bed sheets let them be for 15 minutes then make your bed. You don't want your dead skin cells and dust mites and whatnots to accumulate before the next wash. Ok. Wanted to say this for the longest. Now I can check it off my to do list.
