It's interesting how in Chapter 2, Dogen seems to be this heartless scary killer, and Patricia is a normally kind woman who let her paranoia get the better of her. And now in Chapter 5, Dogen (while still a remorseless killer) has shown a softer side - like rescuing 2 children from freezing to death - while Patricia has been shown to be an evil greedy bitch beneath her warm exterior
There's a ton of nuance in this game and I absolutely love it.
Also it seems Patrica’s motive given in case 2 was a lie. Dogen says he hates needless killing and doenst mention her family at all here

It's definitely a lie. An assassin like Dogen would not have goons. Either Patricia made it up to fabricate an excuse for herself or Dogen himself made it up to threaten her.
There’s a little hint to Simon’s relation to Gustavia way back when you first meet him. Ray offers him some chocolate to cheer him up, but he refuses the offer saying how he dislikes sweets. Considering how his father used him as a taste tester which led to him getting amnesia and nearly freezing to death as well as being cruelly abandoned by him too it’s no wonder he would develop an aversion to sweets even if he himself can’t recall the reason why.
It’s a very contrived hint tbh. If anything, him disliking sweets made you think he wasn’t Gustavia’s lost son (who used to love candy) until hearing Dogen’s story
There's so many weird foreshadowing moments in this game lol.
Anubis was smart to go for Edgeworth’s cravat. It’s where he draws most his power from after all.
And he's not the last dog to go after the cravat.
I’d like to remind you that at the beginning of the game, Shelly de Killer mentioned that he was working for a “Key Individual”.
Simon Keyes. Key. Key Individual.
I love this detail because it's completely intentional.
In japanese, his name includes the character for "monkey" which De Killer uses to call his client a "curious individual" if I remember correctly

@@HyLion yeah on NCS’s playthrough one of the translators commented it was a struggle to come up with a name to keep that hint without it being blatantly obvious

然る方/saru kata is actually unrelated to monkey, it just means "a certain individual". It's just that the 然る part is coincidentally a homophone to 猿/saru/monkey. The use of this homophone may have been intentional of course but it's also a common phrase that you wouldn't blink at if you came across it in any other context.
The sad part of this is that Simon is an example of part of the reason Edgeworth disliked defense attorneys, the idea of potentially defending a possible criminal and he basically ended up doing that with the Roland case
Finally, one of my favorite parts of this game: the reveal of the true culprit of this story. The reactions from players, like Lucah’s at 1:05:15, never fail to get me excited for the finale.

Ace Attorney has a habit of making the Big Bads the character you least expect. Investigations 2 goes one beyond that and makes it the person you would *never* expect.

Now that the twist has finally been revealed, the pun on Simon's name is even more profound. His name is Simon as in Simon says. He's had everyone playing his game and doing exactly what he's set up.

I like how this game gets me to think. Like even the most feared assassin is still a person.
No matter what awful crime you commit you can still be human. Still have fears, still have kindness and still have sympathy.
It’s so interesting to think about.
I already thought Dogen was a cool character, but he's one of my easy favorites now.
I've waiting for this reveal since she started the second case (And also for the gasp in 1:05:15). Turns out Sebastian actually caught the mastermind this whole time and Edgeworth and co helped him get away by pure accident.

Well technically speaking he didn’t actually commit any crimes until this case. And besides, the charge against him WAS false.
Easily one of the best antagonists in the series and definitely one of the best twists.

In the first case, Shelly De Killer said his client who ordered a hit on the fake president was a "key individual". The game hinted at it the whole time.
The moment I saw the title, I just HAD to come on down immediately.
Arguably one of the best twists ever pulled off in any Ace Attorney game.

Sadly wish it was done a bit more cinmeatically.
I think it's really funny how the Berry Big Circus, a place tied to what's often said to be the worst Ace Attorney case, is at the heart of the most complex and involved case so far. This almost feels like a redemption arc for a place.
Also love that Lucah successfully predicted both John being the president's son and the mastermind's identity through jokes. That's some sixth sense right there.
"'Almost Christmas' means it wasn't Christmas!" + Moe's attempts at jokes during a trial when pressed + Coldkiller X -> this whole game.

(More seriously, Recipe for Turnabout is one of the more interesting cases to me, given how it starts in such a strong situation at the beginning.)

@@wouldyourather6105 the idea Tigre could fool an entire court destroyed my suspension of disbelief. Maggey is unreasonable harsh to Gumshoe, we get the LOVELY game mechanic of pressing leading to penalties, and Gumshoe for some reason waited a month to tell Nick about the inital trial
I actually spoiled myself on who the mastermind is, and I was so confused on how they tied into the backstory. But as the pieces came together, I started working backwards, and I was blown away. Damn is this story fantastic.
Same here. Even though the mastermind's identity wasn't as much of a surprise, the way everything tied together more than made up for it.
I did too, I think I was looking up some of the name puns to figure out what they meant, way back a while ago, and got spoiled. But, I had zero idea how that would have been the truth, so the lead up was still just as blind as if I didn’t know who they were. And then being one of the missing kids too, finally figuring out where they fitted into everything, was great also. So, all in all, not the worst thing to be spilled on, since it was such a “what the heck” thing that it made it still interesting lol
I spoiled myself in a similar way on a few things, back before we were even in Case 2 I spoiled myself that Knightley would be the next victim, a fake Di-Jun Huang would die at some point, and Simon had an alternate persona (and that other special thing certain characters get like Knightley and Blaise had) although at the time I didn't know for sure still what role Simon would be playing, as well as the general existence of a character called 'Blaise Debeste' although I had no idea who they were. Damn, do I wish I went into the game fully blind, but at the same time seeing the buildup to Simon as it came throughout the cases was wonderful.
As someone who is watching and is pretty much spoiled on everything except some context, learning how everything comes together and how characters and the player piece it together still gives a lot of enjoyment. Instead of being concerned with the mystery, you can now pick up on minor details and foreshadowing that you wouldn't have otherwise.
It's absolutely insane that all of the previous cases are connected to this.

yeah. Though Im still mixed on her for her behavior in case 4. Using evidence she KNOWS is forged to pin Kay as a culprit just because she has nothing on Blaise yet. There had to be another way

Yeah, I have to agree that this was very questionable. Though, I would say that the fact that John not only was kidnapped, but also accused of the murder of the fake president (and her for a while as well), could be seen as (Manfred von) karma for her actions in case 4.
@@sealedflame6562 I like Courtney’s story on paper but I feel it faulters slightly for having nobody call her out for that or how she enables Sebastian. Closest we get is Blaise pointing out how she was using Sebastian to get close to him. But that’s only a brief moment and it’s not like Blaise has much of a moral high ground
Imagine you're an orphanage owner who helped a Chief Prosecutor KILL the president of another country, say out loud that you were going to kill that assassin to shut-him-up, and then when you become a prison warden years later that assassin shows up in one of your cells. And then it makes sense why Roland was so freaked-out about Knightly "maybe" being one of Dogen's men(and neither realized how kinda-true that was).
I love it when Edgeworth debates with other characters in a “let’s verify the facts and get to the truth” it’s so nice to see collaboration!

I really just love how everything in this game connects alongside many good side plots (especially Sebastian's personal growth is just top tier), but the mastermind definitely just makes it perfect. His theme is my favorite AA track too.

Turnabout Bigtop is often seen as the weakest case in AA franchise so the creators decided: Oh yeah? You want to see a real circus case? We'll make a whole game around it!
You went from clown, to entire circus to finally a true parade. Man... Miles has truly grown.
With the revelation of the President being John's father and the existence of a mastermind, this whole thing has become a bizarre combination of Jerry Springer and Danganronpa.
Soap opera in other words. High on twists and melodrama, and so enjoyable to watch.

This was always one of my favorite "big bad" reveals.
They held on to this one enough for people to come to the conclusion at different times.
Matt's was great too. Kristoph can eat his heart out. They did his so fast; it made that game peak too early imo.
I almost think the opposite - it's like they were trying to make out like Kristoph is done with in the 1st case, that's it, done. To have him come back and be exposed as even worse by the end is kinda great and breaks the norm of having that "final" twist be someone totally out of left field.
BUT. This is my favourite Ace Attorney game, so I'm sure you can figure out how I feel about this mastermind! I like that they are a character you "know" from earlier, and it isn't just an asspull, they are deeply related to almost all the cases in the game.
Kirstoph has that breakdown tho.
Yeah I feel that’s the biggest issue with AJ. Gavin shouldn’t have had his villany revealed to the final case. Doing it in the first causes no emotional struggles
@@skibot9974 I still see him as an intimidating figure, but even unlike Dogen here, once we see Kristoph get put in jail, it sorta deflates the stakes. One way they could have made a late game twist work even while doing the opening one might have been to have Klavier collaborate (willingly or tricked), but the stuff he did with the Mishams hardly mattered much to me. I wish we saw more banter between PW, AJ, and Kristoph because there could have been a unique mentor-shifting arc too if he managed to get away from case 1. Implicate Olga Orly, but in the end of the game go ahead and say it had been Kristoph all along.

The way the mystery unravels here is really good, but one thing that pisses me off in this scene is that just minutes after Dogen admits he wouldn't be able to escape three opponents without help, he manages to slip away from a group of TEN people, several of which were law enforcement that should've been keeping an eye on him.
Dogen probably had enough time to prepare an escape route. After all, he wouldn't just appear in front of several officers and witnesses without some sort of escape plan. He was also listening in and keeping track of what was going on. Even if it was a simple "sneak away" or "sick Anubis on Edgeworth" plan, it still worked because he distracted them with so much more information.
He said he didn't have Anubis with him during the time he assassinated the president. He probably only came to kill the president and wasn't expecting a betrayal. Why he stayed around after killing the president though... there's the possibility he was awaiting for payment or had another order to execute. After all, if he killed the president outside and somehow was in the building afterward, there was something else he had to do if he was sticking around.
Of course, there may be others who will be willing to correct me on any details that I missed. After all, I don't know if there was any information provided for what happened between the assassination and Dogen's escape.
He spill so much tea, that everyone got distracted.
They weren't out to literally kill him. They weren't actively trying to attack him, they were just standing around, engrossed in their own personal revelations, and not keeping a close eye on him. That's HARDLY the same thing.
I guess it's possible that he said that to throw them all off?

1:23 I didn’t think the reveal of Courtney adopting John was that big of a twist. In fact, it seemed super obvious. If you look at the age difference in their profiles, Courtney is only 13 years older than John, and I highly doubt a game rated the equivalent of T for Teen would imply the possibility of John being conceived in Courtney when she was 13, or even 12!
Don’t forget, there’s more than one way for a person to become a parent.
Yeah. I get that it’s really messed up when someone young gets a child.
But doesn’t the constant dead bodies and sometimes bloody crimes scenes also have that effect sometimes?
Like both things are messed up and gross but I guess if you have to be gross in one way it’s preferable it is in a crime scene

Yeah, she also seemingly does look young so even if you don't check on her age and learn John is 13, it should click on you that something doesn't match.
I mean, AA does things like make grown men try to get with Regina who is 16 in 2nd game, as well as giving ship tease between 23+ year old lawyer and their often 15-17 year old assistants, which I find very uncomfortable myself. But making character who is barely a teenager give birth is just... Way too disgusting.

I'll never not enjoy the way every case is woven intricately together in this game. It keeps cases some might consider "filler" interesting and adds another plane of depth to the painting we're watching be made before us.

I mean this game already has best AA soundtrack in my opinion (only rivaled by GAA duology's OST), but man, The Man who Masterminds the Game is just masterpiece of a song and befits perfectly in my opinion one of the best antagonists of the franchise.
I adore this game's writing so much. It brings everything together in such a way you never expected, but it all makes perfect sense when you realize it.
Fully agree. Both characters with 2 bgms(Simon and Sebastian) has perfect music showing the twist of plot.

I remember shouting "You have GOT to be kidding me!" when I got to that moment. I was stunned. As a mystery fanatic, I've become a bit jaded, and it's hard to really surprise me. I'm continually thrilled when the AA series manages to get me.
By the way, you might want to avoid spoiling the Danganronpa games so readily, in case some of your viewers haven't watched that series yet.
I've been waiting for this. When I finally played the finale myself a few days ago, this was truly the most insane sequence of twist after twist after twist...
Surprisingly, Investigations 2 has easily the most sympathetic Big Bad of any Ace Attorney game, due to his sad backstory. Please give him a Nagito Voice!
I guess so, but that's a ridiculously low bar to have to step over. Still doesn't excuse a single thing he did, though.

That seems likely as this one seems rather young as not only isn't he white around his snout and eyes like elderly dogs, but he's also rather clingy like a puppy..! But apparently he's 18 according to the court records?
I think we're supposed to assume that it's the same dog. I guess Dogen just got a hold of rare breed that will live as long as he does lol

I'm glad that Lucah made it all this way without getting spoiled, because I wasn't so lucky. I was on a message board after finishing case 2 to talk about it and some foolish fools decided to have an unspoiler'd exchange about the significance of Simon's name and one of them was like "UH UH DUDE THAT'S A SPOILER" and I was thinking "what's a spoiler" and it was too late I figured it out and I was mad. (Never blurt out "THAT'S A SPOILER" in public kids, there are more discreet and less bonehead ways to do it)
So being able to get a genuine reaction to this reveal was the one experience I was missing from this game. Thanks so much!

I had been very quiet during this LP because I had played AAI 2 before. All I wanted to see was Lucah's reaction...and it was 100% worth it! That was literally how I felt.
Good job emulator!! For lasting for such a lengthy episode... there are at least like one more to come...

Shoutouts to Edgeworth for getting hit by a giant dog and being 100% okay. Big dogs are no joke, as much as I love dogs they can be dangerous even by raw weight. Not horse dangerous, obviously, but dangerous.
But yeah... wow, wow. Glad the emulator held through long enough for this super long special, Dogen's testimony was maybe my favorite ever, holy shit. Investigations 2 crafts a perfect mystery that ties everything together, like Investigations 1 but better, so better, my god.

I jokingly said back in case 2 that Simon was the killer because he kept his eyes closed like some other culprits from the series... So the rule was correct, after all.
In Asian cultures people read each others emotions not by their mouths but by their eyes. You can’t see their eyes, it’s hard to get a read on them, so it’s not uncommon to depict people with natural squints if you want them to be deceptive or secretive.
