Excellent reporting. My gran ( born in that area in the 1890s) said some of the tunnels led to Old Harbour town. Similar tunnels were created from the estates north of Old Harbour such as in Bartons and Woodhall. That's how some of our ancestors were moved around. Our ancestors would, after slavery ended, still use these said tunnels to get to Old Harbour town. People used the tunnel in Bartons right up the 1970s. My own research of my family tree revealed that my Gran's grandmother (born in 1850s) was a Mcleod. How she got that name is anybody's guess. Also in Old Harbour's there's derelict grandstand that was built for the local horse race track (Little Ascot/Marlie) in early 1900s. Sadly its been left to ruin. But after horse racing moved to Caymanas Park in the 1950s, that stand was used by schools, churches and romantics. In its heyday the grand stand structure it was was described by the media then as the best in the world. Drone it next time. Thetford Great House is still in good nick and not far from the St Dorothy's church you mentioned. Keep up the good work.
Thank you so much for this very informative comment, I really have to loom into this history right now. I heard about the tunnels but had no proof. Thanks for watching
If she was born 1850 that's 16 years after slavery so it would be the name of her father. If her gave her the name then it would be her mom's surname. Did you look on Familysearch for her birth records? It should be on there. It's free.
@@EliteJamaica My sister lives down the street from there. It's safe around there. It's one of the safest place in Jamaica. Everybody wants to move to the area.
She got that name from her parents. It’s was not from a slave master. That narrative of Jamaicans getting their names from slave master is the biggest lie told to black people. That castle has Muslim Moorish architecture just like most of the buildings in Spanish Town.
@@dsmith9709 I've been using family search since 2011 and its been a great resource. Thankfully my dad (then in his 90s) was then still alive and was able to add meat to some of the data retrieved. One of my most treasured discoveries was seeing the marriage document of my dad's paternal grandparents dated 1875. Also did research at RGD when you could do it yourself. Did some research in the UK as well. This type of research required lots of cross checking and at times buck up to get the answers. One thing I have learnt is never to assume anything including how some of my ancestors came to use the surnames and forenames they did. Blessings.
You are one of the most interesting JA vloggers. Your work keeps getting better. You have found that niche and exposing the island's past is not only important for the islanders but for everyone. Thank you Alex, hope to meet you soon
Alexx, only just reading most of the comments here. Absolutely Awesome. So glad people appreciate your hard work. You've got the Best of Jamaica, home and abroad, watching Elite Jamaica❗ Big Up my People❗🇯🇲 One Love❗❤
Feeling so overwhelmed seeing you exploring COLBECK CASTLE(🏰) it'z so amazing n I wz living just 3/4mile from that site n thnx again for sharing such fine.
Can't the Jamaican Government restore it for Tourism, wasn't there an agency in Jamaica that looks restore these buildings, I think a trust was set up for this purpose,go public for funding a lot of us would contribute. We would do anything to see Jamaica returns to it's former glory.
As a yute I lived at Colbeck estate, adjacent to the csstle. We used to run boat (cook) in the main building. Back then the property was totally covered with bush, so I can't remember seeing that little perimeter wall all around. They have really cleared up the premises.
Elite Jamaica one of my all time FAVORITE channel on UA-cam!!! Keep up your amazing work bro I've always had a great interest in our history and culture.....

Keep up the good work your videos are informative and educational. More blessings on you as you continue to showcase jamdung (Jamaica 🇯🇲)
Beautiful landscape Alex, why in the name of God the present owners fail to do something positive with those historical buildings? Very interesting video, thanks for sharing ole boy🤣❤
Congrats on your work Your comment is so correct : "Good or bad we should preserve our history " .I see some maintinace of the castle.....who or which organization is doing the upkeep ? Great find and congrats.
Alex, I've been following you from shortly after you started your channel and i have to say how much you have grown! You have unearthed an interest for our history in me that I honestly never even knew existed for me. What I find very disheartening is how we (the government) have no interest/ regard in embracing and preserving our history and culture. We are more interested in following other cultures. But keep doing this wonderful job! We love you!
Good day I am enjoying your videos. I love History. I am from Old Harbour I have visited Castle 2 times.Very interesting thanks very .God Bless your program Jamaica has a rich History. Thanks will let my daughter show my grand children
Thank you Alex for an interesting video of Colbeck Castle. It's owned by Jamaica Heritage Trust, just wondering why they don't let it pay for itself by maintaining the building and preserving it better. It's on the tourist trail. This tells you Jamaica isn't only about beach hols, we have a history to be explored.
Another great video, Alex!! Not too far away at the end of 'Rock Stone road' in Spring Village there a mansion/castle formerly owned by a Mr. Clyde (?) that was quite splendid when I was a kid (the road leading to it had tiles, which you can still see remnants of). It has deteriorated since his passing decades ago however (and does have a 'No trespassing' sign at its gate (I checked it out last time I visited JA).
Hi Alex? Big fan of your efforts. I live in Massachusetts USA but moving to Jamaica soon . We will live in Sherwood Forest. You made laugh with irony of an English man who built an Italian style villa. Which is a Moorish Palace. Moorish Arch is what those arches are call. The layout is Moorish. The Moorish plumbing and irrigation was complex. The African Moors ruled Spain Portugal, Southern Italy, Southern France, North Africa. Their rule started 711 AD in Europe and lasted between 700 to 800 years. They brought with them the astrolabe and the compass. *(That's how Spain Portugal France and England made it to the Caribbean!)* The Moorish *EDUCATION* was opened to all including women. They built 17 universities also open the 1st *public libraries in Europe.* They introduced paper and Arabic numbers. The Moors brought with them *advances in Astronomy, Chemistry, Hygiene Mathematics, Medicine, Philosophy, Physics.* The Moors introduced Europe to cane sugar, cotton, ginger, lemon, orange, pomegranate, rice, saffron, silk. How many these does JA still grows?
There is a great house in Manchester called Knowsley Park between Christiana and Devon, it used to be a pimento and coffee estate with slaves, check it out ✅ The man who is in charge lives in Denham Farm on the road to Devon and has a heavy tractor business at the entrance to Denham Farm.
Thanks much. Seek out the government to invest in repairs. It can be used as a museum of past slavery/ historic artifacts to generate income and maintain the structure and grounds. Advocate for Jamaica's Renaissance and Historics
Why the goverment of Jamaica ignore building like these. Too many of them been abandant , people would love to visit building like these. Time they start restoring❤❤❤❤ them.

Legend has it that there is or was a tunnel from the castle to neighboring Bowers where there is a great house

Alex if the building looking like this it was nice place then
This castle was originally designed as a look out point for the English to keep an eye open for Spanish ships in old harbour bay
Hey Alex doing a great job. Thanks for all that information. We’re you able to find anything written on the grave at Colbeck? 27:10
Ok, so that's not a grave it was actually the steps for the pool
Thanks
Hum am l with out my history. This is the real matrix of Jamaica.
If l had money. I would buy this place
Must really take some time doing all this research. Bravo
Ever since I filmed the vlog two years ago I have been searching for the origin of this castle
Do you remember the music video with the Boggle dancing that was filmed here? It was often shown on TVJ in the 90s.
Interesting, I have to check that out
I was told that one of those tunnels leads to the great house in marlie mount
