    I haven't looked at all the comments, so excuse me if this has already been covered, but your suggestion that one should use a UV filter and a comment that they are inexpensive, should come with a strong caveat regarding the low optical quality of many inexpensive UV filters. My last camera purchase was a Sony RX10 IV and I got it with a kit that included a UV filter. I am a lens test nerd, and when I shot my first tests I thought I had gotten a faulty lens because the fine detail was quite blurry whatever the f stop. However, when I removed the cheap filter, the problem was gone. Luckily I had a high quality filter of the appropriate size and test shots confirmed little or no degradation of resolution. You will choke at the cost of the high quality filters, but the alternative, if you want to keep your lens element away from sand and salt spray and plant pollen is to keep a lens cap or cheap filter in front of it until the last moment before you remove it. Save up and buy a good UV filter and test shoot it when you get it to make sure you have not gotten a bad one despite the manufacturer's reputation - mistakes happen - you don't want them affecting your irreplaceable shots.

    I already have tons of lens wipes by "Safety Director." They say anti-static and anti-fog. (Glass, Plastic, Polycarbonate). Silicone Free containing isopropyl alcohol. It doesn't say anything about being Ammonia free. Are these safe to use on my camera lens? There's a smudge on my Canon PowerShot lens that a cloth will not erase. Thanks for any help. I'd hate to ruin my camera, and on reviews of other lens wipes I keep seeing they're usually delivered as being fairly dried out.

    I bought an L lens at more than twice the price of an STM lens. Both are 24-105. No matter how much I clean the L lens, it just isn't as tac sharp in most cases as the STM lens, and the STM lens has a scratch on it. Both were bought second hand. I sent the STM lens back to get the L, but I wish I'd kept it and saved my money. What a disappointment the L glass is. I ran all kinds of side by side tests at different F stops. The STM beats it in most cases from f5.6 onwards, and the macro distance is closer, the IS is much quieter and is a much lighter, less bulky lens. Did I just get a bad copy L lens?

    Suggestion.......You should be using the Kimwipes Kimtech science* Brand Delicate task wipes made by Kimberly Clark instead of the micro cloth rags you are using. The micro cloth you are using, is gathering dirt every time you use it and then you use it again. Unless you are using a brand new clean micro cloth every time, you are taking the chance of grinding dirt from your previous lens into the next lens you clean. The Kimwipes are a one time use dry wipe that come in 280 wipes per box. If you buy them by the case on Amazon (part# 34155 for 60 box's per case and part#34120 for 30 box's per case) you can usually get your cost down to around $1.80 to $2 per box. You can use these wipes dry or wet with your spray and they will not scratch your lenses. Micro clothes are no good unless you are using a new one every time. Other than that you are correct in your process of cleaning your lenses.

    • @34thncrenshaw
      @34thncrenshaw 6 років тому +3

      yes u are right, but technically the filters are lens if u wanna get serious, just like sunglasses which are just one piece of glass or plastic on each are they both are still lenses. "clean my sunglasses lens"

    • @hyphenphotography
      @hyphenphotography 6 років тому

      34thncrenshaw technically, you are incorrect. A lens is a piece of transparent material with opposite surfaces either or both of which are curved, causing light to be refracted so they either converge or diverge. This is exactly the properties that are not required of a filter. A filter is used to reduce light transmission without affecting it's path through the filter material. Hence a lens and a filter are entirely different things. Using the example of sunglasses lens is just using a phrase in common parlence. It is not scientifically correct, unless the material used in the sunglasses alters the direction of light. If light is unchanged, then the sunglasses are merely filtering the light

    • @34thncrenshaw
      @34thncrenshaw 6 років тому

      so you'd say, "i'm gonna clean my sunglasses filters?" lol, so prescription glasses would be actual lenses thought right? cuz it is bending the light

    • @hyphenphotography
      @hyphenphotography 6 років тому +1

      34thncrenshaw no, I would say "I'm gonna clean my sunglasses". No one ever says "I'm gonna clean my sunglasses filters or sunglasses lenses". And yes, if the sunglasses are prescription, then it is because they have lenses to adjust the way the light enters the eye
