  • ICELAND, 3 days in Landmanalaugar, Fjallabak Natural reserve in the Highlands. I emptied 3 times the water from the cold box, a crazy weather has appeared, rain, showers but we remained united untill the end.

    The 50 bucks Quechua Popuptents outstand the 400 bucks tents :D

    Nice music choice. I would not have imagined that Vivaldi had been to Iceland.

    As a resident of a subtropical environment, I can say that storms and heavy rain are par for the course... but there still being light at midnight... that's crazy!

    This video could be an advertisement for Hilleberg tents!! They appear to be the only ones not being flattened by the wind!

      Or the Quechua: About 50 times cheaper.

      @@neozaruneozaru8215 Not very familiar with Quechua over here (U.S.) and I don't know the brand well enough to determine which might be Quechua tents in the video but if they work well at those price points then good on em!
      Your endorsement piqued my interest though so I did a bit of shopping. They seem to suffer from an image problem over here as they seem to be regarded as something of a "Walmart brand"? I think Decathlon tried to open some brick-and-mortar stores over here sometime back but they closed them all up in fairly short order. Seems they had a hard time breaking into our already saturated "budget outdoor" center market and competing with Walmart, Bass Pro, Dick's, and Sierra Trading post etc.
      I found it a little hard to find any detailed specs on things like fabric choices, denier weights, coating, pole materials etc. Their website seems to lack tech specs beyond pack weight and floor dimensions which leaves me feeling like they are aimed at the car camping crowd? From what I could figure out though it seems they are mostly non-rip stop coated polyester and in many cases appear to use fiberglass poles? (Something of a hard stop for me as I've seen too many FG poles fail in my time and got my fill of glass splinters in my palms when pitching tents as a kid 🙂) Looks like a 2 year warranty (as opposed to Hilleberg's lifetime warranty...which it better be for the PRICE Hilleberg charges!!)
      All that said, you are quite right...they are WAY cheaper than Hilleberg but as with all things in life there are no solutions, only tradeoffs. And while Hilleberg does in fact get a premium price for their tents (much of which is boutique brand you are paying for) when you bring in a tent at 1/8th the cost that has to come from somewhere an that's almost always a matter of materials/fit/finish/warranty. But hey, if Quechua work then they work!! And without breaking the bank!!

    Don't bring a summer tent up there, buy a low profile, expedition style tent with good waterproofing or rent a tent there, not fun having a completely drenched tent with no where to sleep, we were very lucky that our NatureHike CloudUp 3 (chinese MSR copycat design) held up just fine after 3 days of rain, also take note of the wind direction!

    • @tahaniaisa1737
      @tahaniaisa1737 2 місяці тому

      Naturehike tents are pretty good in strong winds then? Would it be comparable to hilleberg tents?

    • @daijoubu4529
      @daijoubu4529 2 місяці тому

      @@tahaniaisa1737 Hilleberg tents on another price point isn't? Just keep your expectations realistic since it's still a (budget) lightweight backpacking tent, it depends on the Nature Hike model I suppose but our Cloud Up 3 held up well, they also have a tunnel style tents OPALUS, make sure the back of the tent face against the wind, use all the guy lines, bring a little hammer with you to install the stakes, iirc the soil was packed sand/rocks in the Highlands, the CloudUp comes with lightweight aluminum stakes which did OK but you may want better/broader ones for sandy soils

    What is the brand and type of the most durable tents? Those green ones seem from Decathlon? Thanks

    • @alexandrevigner1022
      @alexandrevigner1022  7 років тому +5

      For this kind of tente you need, MSR (nuuk, Huba) or the CAMP Minima models. Our tent, the green one, the VAUDE are good as well because the sticks are outside and they take well the wind (but depend of the rotation between the tente and the wind) and for this you need a bit of luck.

      @@niklas1914 It looks like Nigor Wickiup 3 /4. We’ve just bought the 3 version. I must say the nylon is light which is nice for hiking, but you really need to pull it tight after it gets wet. The pyramid shape also should be sturdy although in the video it just looks horrible.

    Sorry, no pity for these rich country tourists with expensive (albeit improper) equipment looking for notches in their "adventure tourism" belt or perfect Instagram photos. Not only pitching in a undesirable location at large, but individual tents in bad locations. Worst, didn't check conditions ahead. Iceland gobbled you up.
