I was born and raised in Hong Kong and came to Toronto years ago for school. Due to the pandemic I haven't been back for years and seeing you all eat together always makes me smile. Unfortunately, both of my grandfathers passed away before I was born so I never got to meet them. My last name is Lau as well so watching and listening to Daddy Lau teach us his dishes feels like I'm interacting with my grandfather. It's also very endearing to listen to Cantonese and makes me feel like I'm around family. The food on this channel never fails to makes me drool and thank you so much for bringing home closer when I can't go back :)

Hey Andy, as Belgian raised by Hong Kong parents, I really love your channel as it resonates with my background and my love for food! My Belgian girlfriend uses your channel to make us delicious dishes. I also glow up when I hear your dad speak Cantonese :D!
But what I miss the most are more veggy recipes, or at least more vegetables in recipes. Not critique, just a friendly tip to include more vegetables in your channel. Keep up the good work :)!

oh my GOD this is exactly my favourite dish and not every place (casual places nearby anyway) offers it as a noodle option vs the other noodles!!!! okay, your dad always makes every recipe so approachable so i'm DELIGHTED. one of these days i will try to make it for myself. :)

Agreed. We have a lot of good Asian restaurants around where I live, but its hard to find any noodles but Lo mein. Recently though, there have been more and more chinese restaurants that offer hand pulled noodles, wide noodles, etc... or other staples in modern chinese meals. Even some dim sum if you look around. Not just the usual lo mein or chop suey.

My boyfriend's twins are really picky eaters but love this dish (it's the only thing they eat at their favourite Chinese restaurant). I watched the video and it helped me, resulting in a thumbs up from each twin! One of them even said it tasted just like it came from the restaurant! Now if they would only eat the veggies and not just the noodles!

I made a version of this yesterday, with nai pak choy (Chinese white cabbage), carrots, fucuk and egg. The noodles are already so flavourful, hard to go wrong. I didn't cook the noodles first, though. There's a style of cooking that merely pours the gravy over the noodles and let it 'cook' like that, so the noodles are still a little crispy.

Yellow chives are chives grown in the dark (like white asparagus is green one grown in the dark). They are more mellow and tender as a result.

This is one of my favourite dishes. I was taught that traditionally, the two types of mushrooms that go into this dish are straw mushrooms and shiitake mushrooms. Is that right? Also, it's quite impossible for me to find yellow chives, so I've been using regular chives instead - but obviously the flavour is quite different.
I tried cooking it the other day, but I haven't quite mastered it yet. I couldn't get the sauce right. I'll try again using your recipe.

If you cannot find it, try instant noodle instead. Nissan brand instant noodle is good in this purpose and has been on local restaurant regular dishes for some years. XO sauce is also good for this type of dishes. If you use XO sauce stirring frying instant noodle, make it dry. Thus do not put too much water releasing vegetables there. XO sauce is a little bit hot. However you mix it with a bowl of noodle and it is not significant.

What brand of Yee Mein noodles does your dad use and where do you find it? I was using another vlogger's recipe a few weeks ago for New Year and tried to find the recommended noodle brand at 99 Ranch. No such luck. I actually had to ask two younger guys (since one of them had a Cal shirt on I figured I could ask) since I had to guess at which noodle would work. When I told them I was making "longevity noodles" for New Year they looked at me quizzically and said that they didn't grow up making that dish and only used those types of noodles in soup. They were from the Canton area. My family and friends found it hilarious that two native Chinese guys and an American mixed Chinese guy couldn't figure it out. My only excuse is growing up in Hawaii!😂

When you’re telling them longevity noodle (長壽麵) it can mean a totally different kind of noodle that people cook for birthdays, usually white in color, non-fried, and serve with soup and an egg. So I’ll stick with the name e-noodle when asking about this particular kind of noodle next time to avoid confusion.

I have asked about making the Yin Yang rice when you put out a question about tomatoes. Hopefully there will be a video of that eventually in the future. If not, I understand! There are so many other phenomenal dishes that needs to be looked at too. There is one thing that I can not find a good recipe for, regardless how many recipes and videos I have looked at. It is something I have grown up with, but no one in my family is willing to give up their recipe for it. Claypot rice. I have claypots that are in severe need of a great recipe for it. My rice has turned out too goopy, too dry. The chicken is not flavourful enough, or the gailan/babybokchoy is over cooked. If claypot rice is in the future lineup, please let me know! THANK YOUUUUU

Best E-Fu noodle dish I ever had was from a restaurant in SF Chinatown across from Portsmouth Square called Sun Hong Hern. Ingredients included mushroom, shrimp, char siu, squid, and bok choy, in a brown sauce over the E-Fu noodle. The dish was called Sup Kum Mun Yee Mein. The restaurant sadly closed years ago and I miss the dish. Does anyone know how to make the sauce. I keep experimenting to get it right.
