Shot on the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro.
Lenses: Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 / Canon 85mm f1.8
Gimbal: DJI Ronin S
The clips are all color corrected in the same way.

gold, I use it for when the story needs it, if I need a modern look like a rap music video I don't use the filter, if it's a retro look or female artist or like a love story then it's very useful it takes the digital edge and adds character.

Really like the aesthetic here. My only problem is knowing I don't have control over this parameter in post, even on set it can be cumbersome to analyse your image and decide we need the 1/8 instead of the 1/4. Glow, halation and soften in resolve has been fantastic for me so far, I can dial in exactly the aesthetic I want in post without affecting my original image. I'll definitely need to buy a promist and see if the effect is superior in camera compared to what you can do in Resolve. Thanks for the video!
Completely agree! More control in post shooting flat. Same in audio engineering ... record flat/dry to give you more control in post. Baking something in during production is probably the worst thing you can do.

@@liquidmocofilmsllc4915 It depends on your intention. At the end of the day if your shoot or record audio flat you have to rely on digital emulations to replicate an analog tool. Its always gonna be missing that little bit of "magic" but good story or song will always win. calling it the worst thing you can do isn't quite true imo. A neve,ssl console, or u87 mic do have a sonic footprint id say the same for lenses,sensors, and filters
@@blackliquidtv1579 nah I disagree… a recording chain isn’t perfect either and you won’t know this until you are mixing against other elements in the mix. Using a filter is not comparable to using a certain camera/sensor. When you use a quality sensor/preamp/mic you do it knowing it can still be manipulated in post. The example here with the pro mist would be like recording audio with a heavy eq and expecting to fix that later or expecting people to like it as is.
My point is recording flat to make post more productive always wins just like shooting RAW always wins in post.
If you argue that then you must have a hell of an eye and a hell of an ear! Not to mention that the client makes the ultimate decision. So I would rather be able to appease the client in post on the fly than to tell the client we will have to re shoot or re record. And of course at a cost whether that is time or money or both.

I prefer to have the control to do it in post as needed, without having to reshoot something without the filter if it ended up being too much

There's a time and place for everything, but I too am beginning to dislike the Pro-Mist look. Everything starts to look flat and blurred.
I think it always depends on what a video needs. The look doesn't suit every project but works especially well for more artsy productions. When using a stronger version of the pro-mist, I think it's important to talk about the look with clients beforehand.
@@80white Very much so, but I'm starting to feel that the Pro-Mist look is all too often becoming a cliche, very much like the orange and teal look that some still feel defines cinematic. I guess it boils down to personal taste.
What’s funny is that I think it looks even more “cinematic.” It gives it a softer, filmic, dreamier look that I think is very pleasant. It’s only when the mist effect is overdone where it begins looking funky for normal use.
@@80white I feel like the effect of the filter was perfect in your video. I feel like it gave the video a lot more character and it even looked more cinematic. It wasn’t overdone at all.

Hi i just ordered the 1/4 52mm for my sigma 30mm lens according to the tiffen lens to filter chart. So do i need to buy any kind of step up ring as well along with it? If yes then which one?

Great Video. The composition and framing was top notch as well(especially that cross tomb-stone). Quick question. Did you reintroduce contrast in post? As I've seen quite alot of examples of 1/4 black pro mist reducing contrast significantly to almost making it milky. Your pro mist images seem to keep a similar contrast to the non filter ones while having that filmic halation. Thanks
Thank you very much!! Yes I did add some contrast to both images. But I always color corrected the comparsion shots in the same way. You can see that the shadows in the Promist shots are always a little bit more lifted than in the shots witohut the filter. It may also depend on the Filter strength.
This has been my main issue when trying to use these pro mist filters. I can never seem to bring back the same sort of contrast and my final product often looks cloudy/milky. This is probably saying more about my grading skills than the filters though.

Thanks man!! So I think the Ronin S isn’t really made for a camera with a form factor like the Pocket 6K Pro. But there is a way to balance it on the gimbal without any additional plate. We will upload a test video about that soon:)
It's a nice filter to use. You just need to avoid light leaks

Thank you! I just converted the footage from BlackMagic Film to Video and made some adjustments in Premiere :) But for bigger projects I always use Davinci Resolve for color grading.
Have you used an IR cut filter with the pro mist yet on the 6k pro?
The focal length matters. For example you need less diffusion the more telephoto you go. So 18mm 1/4 then 50mm and over 1/8 so doing an example shot like this is not helpful without telling us the focal length used with which filter.
I got the 6k pro and the Sigma 18-35mm, later on I may buy the canon 85mm 1.4 ef. Should I buy 72mm or 77mm? I heard of step up rings, do they work both ways, so I can use the 72mm filter on 77mm or 82mm lense and bigger filter on smaller lense?
I think the 72mm and 77mm Pro-Mist should work on the Canon 85mm 1.4.
On a wider focal length, however, there might be some vignetting (I'm not entirely sure).
Don't you have problems with reflections caused by the Black Pro Mist filter?
Yes but not that often. If you have very bright light sources and the angle of entry is very frontag you will occasionally see blue reflections in the picture.

there is a lot of MM options i found on amazon. e.g 77mm. 55mm.... which one should i be buying for the 18-35mm lens?
The different numbers stand for the size of the filter thread. For the Sigma 18-35mm you should buy the 72mm version.

You just have to check how big the filter thread of the respective lens is:)

Why the filter if the ND is built in?
The Black Pro-Mist is a diffusion filter, not an ND filter.
No ND used ?
I used the internal NDs. The „No Filter“ refers to the Black Pro-Mist;)
No filter is better
Too much, 1/8 is way better
