Voice VLANS!! What is your experience with Voice VLANs so far? Have you had to use them yet?
I've always used a separate vlan for voice. It makes implementing QoS a ton easier. Speaking of, I took the QoS class last week and it was frickin' amazing. Worth every penny.
Yeah, we're switching phone system providers at work. We have a very similar config to what you showed here - standard computer traffic bridged through the phone which is then plugged into the wall. VOIP VLANs are a must for multiple reasons, like you explained here, though it's funny that Cisco is adamant about calling this an access configuration when almost all signs are pointing to trunk!
+ bubbasan Where did you take the course?
I took it through Sunset Learning.
SunBePraised, Same here.
too much words and no answer for "how does it really work?" in this vid
Sorry! I didn't want to make it too long but I also wanted to make sure everyone had the chance to understand what a Voice VLAN is and why we use it before I give the peak behind the curtain!
Stick with me, I'll put out part 2 soon!
Hence the title.... "The 10,000 foot view"
@@NetworkChuck Still waiting for part 2
Where is part 2
when is Part 2 coming..? would be very helpful!
Cheers :)
Is the second part of this coming soon?
Here's an idea for a video: Crash course in configuring a switch fresh out of the box. Also: try doing a video comparing Level 2 switches with Level 3 switches. It wouldn't hurt to recommend a few good models of routers and switches to start a lab with.
Great channel man!
NetworkChuck Lives! :-) Thanks for the vid.
LOL! Thanks for watching!
Thanks, You are awesome man!
you rock Man! you give me the exact explanation I was looking for! thanks a lot!
Chuck you’re the best man! please put part two of how it actually works, I’ve kinda got the secret already lol but like how you explain it man
Chuck, well done. Keep it up!!
Thank you!
Chuck we definitely need part 2, pretty please?
Looking forward to deuxième partie
Hey NC congrats on your CBTNUGGET training gig it's awesome. Did you ever do a final video on this topic. I can't seem to find it if you did.
like your video as well as t-shirt!lol..awesome
Thanks for the video! Was there ever a second part to this?
I'm not seeing a part 2 on his channel. Oh well.
I installed the first voip (voice over I.p) it was a nightmare. Business are dependent on their phones, I still install pbx system. Well, I will try them again after watching your video. Thanks.
Very nice video. Waiting for next part!
And a Question
What is an ideal design for voice? Is it necessary to connect laptop or computer to ip phone? Why we need to connect pc with ip phone?
Hope in next video you can explain it at the end. Thanks Chuck. Your my favorite.
Thanks Syed! I hope to have the next one out soon!!
Ideal usually just means one thing, making sure you have enough bandwidth. Putting a pc behind a phone is normally done when you only have one ethernet drop. At that point, your phone and your PC are sharing the bandwidth of that one switchport, whether is be fastethernet or gigabit
NetworkChuck where is the second part of video on how they work??
Nice video!
Thanks!
everytime you hit the table, my screen havin a earthquake😂
I love VoIP !!
keeping it simple. this is what Radia Perlman did when she invented Spanning tree protocol. Really nice clean analogy about "healthy" and "sick" kids. Makes sense.
Very informative video. I really liked your style of presenting the concept. It was like a friend telling you about some event that occured. Very relaxed. By the way access vlans are configured with voice vlans in three ways. 1 single vlan access port, 2 multi vlan access port, 3 trunk port.
Thanks!! I thought I would try a different style and see what you guys thought!
Now, are you talking about "voice vlans" or just vlans in general?
Great video. Reminds me of a cbt nugget video. Simple, quick, and great content.
I appreciate it Michael! It's what I was going for so I'm glad that was noticed!
For everyone's information I bought it today and it was only $10 but he does a deal for his CCNA and CCNP course for $20
Sweet!
t shirt is great i would like to buy one like this
nice vid bro! can`t wait for the next video :)
Thanks bro! You keep me motivated!
Once you have the voice vlan setup how do you set the qos for it and prioritize that traffic was it works it’s way to the edge and out the network?
Is there going to be a part 2 to this video?
Would running two separate ethernet cables to each desk in an office (and having one network switch for voice and a separate one for data) accomplish the same thing?
You are a network god
Whoa.....wouldn't go near that...
Maybe demi-god? lol. I'll settle for wizard though.
NetworkChuck could you please make a video on subnetting
eh, there are a lot of good videos out there already on subnetting
It’s now an A/V thing as well.
There is a difference between a voice vlan and a vlan called voice. LLDP-MED negotiates the VLAN with the phone and the phone tags the VLAN back towards the switch creating the two broadcast domains. The phone does not hold the vlan in it's configuration at all. Cheers!
Do voice vlans automatically configure QOS when applied to an interface? Or do you need to configure QOS as well as apply the voice vlan?
Thanks
Has there ever been a part 2? I can not find it.
Hello, first of all AWESOME SHIRT! second, I’ve been working with data/voip traffic for about 6 years now and i still don’t know it all. I’ve worked on Cisco/HP A5500/Aruba 3810M switches and sometimes it gets needless to say overwhelming. But at the end of the day it’s worth it! For a long time I’ve noticed our Data/VOIP traffic were all on the same VLAN with no QoS... took it upon myself to hit up good ol’ google and do some research. It’s hard to implement “new voice vlans” in a live environment. What type of QoS do you use? There are more questions I’m sure just don’t want to turn this into a novel haha. Remember “Switch# wr me”
MORE VIDS!!!!!!! !!!! ! !!!!
They're coming!
Wow man, here is a quick advice. You absolutely should go into teaching. This video is amazing. Lets go certify and study together! Cheers
Thanks Ivan!! I REALLY appreciate your comment. It's something I've been thinking about and this comment is great.
You should really consider teaching. I taught the Cisco CCNA academy for around 10 years and really enjoyed seeing young people get into networking. Oh and the old saying is true, "if you truly want to learn a subject, teach it!"
You'll be seeing stuff from me soon!! Seeing this comment definitely motivated me to take that step. Thanks!
In that case you just got your first student, me (shy). Good luck with that. You are a nice guy and you deserve it. :)
What can I do if I had a PC which has a dialing Software installed? It needs to communicate with the telephone server in the network. If I separate them it wont work and if I put both in their VLANs i have the traffic again on both networks... do I miss anything?
Can you please share me this topic continued vedio.. please
Where is the fallow up video at?
I could NOT find part 2.. Any help plzz
Coffeechuck...
yeah, at that time I was already 3-4 cups of coffee deep......any more and I would have died. lol!
If it walks and talks like a trunk, its a trunk!
How voice vlan actually works ?
that udemy course is only $10 bucks for the next 5 hours!
Even better deal!!
So.... where's the rest of this video? lol
.......it's coming ;)
My DHCP server is issuing IP address with VLAN 0 all of a sudden. Can anyone help me understand and possibly fix the issue!?
I finally found out that I have a rogue DHCP server. Can anyone tell me how to remove the rogue DHCP server?

Video starts at 2:16. Everything before that is pretty much BS.
I dont know who accepted you in CBTNuggets as trainer but you never answer a great topic. Really no offence but you are very poor instructor for networking. Trainers like you there are millions but pointless. I have seen you are interested more on video ads so you can get some money rather then teach good like Keith or Jeremy. The students that support you are very juniors that have no idea what networking is and thats why you get good credits. Me as senior can see a lot of gaps in your experience and really weak knowledge. Its good for you that are famous but you need huge and urgent improvement. Dont go further just see Keith Barker videos and make the difference. Tnx for understanding and no heart feelings.
