French St. Martin and Dutch St. Maarten are 2 different countires. Dutch Sint Maarten is part of the kingdon of The Netherlands. This includes 5 Dutch islands and The Netherlands itself. 3 of the Dutch islands(Saba, Statia, Boanaire) are considered to be special municipalities. St. Maarten, Aruba and Curaçao are constituent countries. The french side is an overseas collectivity of France and unlike the Dutch side, is part of the European Union. Hence why the Euro is the official currency used on the French side. The Dutch side will accept it as a form of payment but it is not the legal tender.
I’d rather have this season, all year! Thanks for sharing. This is one of my stops on my next cruise, but I wanted a video that focuses on the island, instead of the cruise. You definitely have a new follower!
I believe Saint Martin is one of the few islands that does not have any rivers or freshwater sources, so water is a premium and rainfall is collected in cisterns while most tap water is derived from one of the three seawater desalination plants on the island. Trevor and Anna, have you priced bottled water there? It's supposed to be rather expensive. Enjoy the beauty of the island!
Great video!!! I wonder if this is current. Has it been awhile since you filmed this? I am hoping to see some good current video of Orient Bay Beach!!! Please!!!!!! Happy Travels!!!
Absolutely wild about Mullet Bay and the waves. When I went, it was literally the most calm and clear beach I've ever visited. It is currently my favorite beach in the world because of this. And it had zero seaweed. Interesting to see the difference you experienced compared to mine.
Oh boy, every minute of this video was stunning….love the beach scene and that cute accommodation is just my thing! Vibrant, colourful, beautiful shots Trevor! You both look so well 👍😎🤗wish I was there!!
Yes, I’m actually a St Martin resident (French side) so yes, you can actually add it as a country, or even 2 countries. When you take up health insurance for travel, they consider Sint Maarten a distinct country or territory, and Saint Martin French side as well. Neither as part of France or Holland. The difference though, is that, Saint Martin French. can since 2007 raise their own taxes and income taxes, independently from France, (much lower taxation than in France), but it’s still considered and an overseas collectivity of France (it used to be considered as a department of France, and the French side residents are getting French healthcare benefits and all the other social benefits like holidays etc, just as if they were in france. They have French Nationality and French passports. Neither is the case for the residents of Dutch sxm. They don’t get Dutch benefits, and their passport is specific to the Dutch Antilles. It’s not a Dutch passport. Now, Saint Martin French raises its own taxes, but it’s still considered French territory and one of the perriferial territories of the EU as well. So in French st martin you have both French and EU flags everywhere. In duct St Maarten it’s different. at lower mast right nearby. It’s a part of the Dutch Antilles. Dutch Antilles in the 90’s or early 2000’s became a self administered part of the Dutch Royal overseas territories. But they are not a whole part of Holland anymore. They raise their own taxes, and they have much more indépendance from Holland than St Martin French has from France, as to how they police themselves, who and how they trade with, more indépendance as well in all decision making regarding healthcare systems etc. The French side being technically a part of France still, and a part of the eu, if you fly with your dog that’s on a EU pet passport, you have no paperwork to do at all as long as you land , from a foreign land, on the French side or on Saint barths. If you land with your dog in the Dutch side? A whole different story. You have to apply for an import permit, and there is a procedure to that that I just went through with my dog…. Next time I’m landing on the French side, I can tell you that. So a Dutch person, with their dog, fly direct from amsterdam to Dutch side of Saint Martin, they have to apply for an import permit to land into sxm Juliana, like everybody else, even though they’re Dutch , and it’s Dutch Sint Maarten ! AND if they land on the French side , or in St barth, then no paperwork at all, just the pet EU passport with all valid vaccinations. Sint Maarten Dutch has a Dutch naval base, they have the Dutch Gendarmerie there as well, bit to help with things, not to rule over people. Sxm Dutch is considered as a third country, as it’s not at all part of the eu anymore, and the same goes for the rest of the Netherlands Antilles (Bonaire, curaçao, Aruba, etc..)
The legend concerning the division between the French and Dutch side is that each nation chose a runner that started on opposite ends of the island and ran towards each other until they met. The location where they met determined the dividing line between the nations. The cooperation treaty was signed in 1648 on a place called Concordia Hill.
@@DelightfulTravellers I was told the same thing from a local when we were visiting many years ago. We were also told that the French side is bigger becasue the drank less during that time and it helped them take more land. Not sure abuot that, but it's what we were told. Just thought I'd share. :) Happy travels!
So fun you are able to affordable explore outside the DR. Loved the studio perfect for two. Ughh the internet! Beautiful video looking forward to seeing more of the island. ~Cara ❤
Such a beautiful island. I have a tip for everyone. Don’t drink in the jewelry shops in port. It ends up being very expensive even though the drinks are free. lol - lived and learned on a cruise ship stop. Enjoy your stay!!
I did a trip to Saint Martin years ago with a friend. The most interesting thing I noticed was the contrast between the french tourists in Marigot (very stylish and avant garde) versus the American tourists at the Mullet Bay Golf Course close to our hotel, (mostly in traditional square golf attire), two uttery divergent species of humans in close proximity.
I used to work on a cruise ship and we stopped in St Martin's port every week. I loved that the beach was so accessible from the ship for a quick dip, however, I don't think I would vacation there with all the cruise ships, haha (so many). One thing that I found sad is they were removing mangroves to make room for more ships:( I am looking forward to my trip to Las Terrenas next month, thanks to many of your informative videos, I had never heard of it before watching your videos, so thank you!
