It’s not “wasting money” in the sense that you’re enjoying the company of a loved one, however there’s plenty of more affordable alternatives that can achieve the goal of saving for your grail and being with your significant other.
Many visits at the cinema have been a waste of money to me and my gf ;) don't tell me you miss anything in life if you can't watch those 2-3 marvel movies per month while stuffing yourself with fast food at a location you have to drive to and bear the stupidity of the audience. Just stay at home, cook together, get under a blanket with your gf and enjoy a streaming service.. you save money and gain quality.
If you have to give up a lot of things you enjoy to afford a Rolex, then can you really afford it? I know there are those people that just absolutely feel the need to project an image of success and wealth, but in all honesty... nobody else really cares if you have a Rolex. Don't get me wrong... they're beautiful watches, and a Rhodium Yachtmaster is my dream watch. But they are "luxury" watches for a reason. They're not necessary. It's a fashion accessory, a status symbol, and yes - some impressive engineering and build quality... but that certainly shouldn't trump the little things that bring you joy each day or week. At the end of the day, it's just a watch. You can admire the shit out of it every time you look at it, but you should do that with your day, your memories, your loved one. Work hard. When you get to a point of comfort financially where you could theoretically "impulse buy" a $9,000 dollar item and not be too concerned about it... that's when you can really afford it. Just my opinion. Everyone is different.
You can do those things and save money at the same time. I know people that eat out for dinner 3-4 times per week (or more), that spend hundreds per month on alcohol, that see every new movie when it comes out. All I'm suggesting is to cut back on SOME those activities, if you want to make saving money for a large purchase a priority. People seem to be missing that point entirely.
@3:00 I'm married and this is really the first thing to be done before anything else. When you can get pass that 1st step, everything else will be easier or sort of easy - since you got the support or at least your significant other does not go against it. I've been telling my wife that one day I'll get an Explorer 1 or a Sub, she said that's okay as long as I sell every other watches I have inside the watch box, so yeah... 😂
I'm not sure I'd consider cutting back on frivolous spending the end of life. I know people that eat out for dinner 4-5 nights a week, as much as 20 times a month. I'm suggesting cutting that back by 1-2 times a week, and a few other suggestions to make the goal of owning a Rolex (or any expensive luxury item) a reality inside of a year. It's simply trading 1 set of luxuries for another. It's all about what you want more. Neither is wrong, pick your poison.
You can! Go to the library, and grabs books on whatever you want to learn. reading one good book a week WILL change your brain, and change your life. Good luck!
You shouldnt spend that kind of money on a Rolex if you dont own a home yet. or well funded retirement plan. save for the higher priorities and get the Rolex later in life. be smart. invest that money. later in life that will buy you a Rolex and still have thousands in interest in your retirement.
Well, actualy nowdays, vintage/used are invenstment watches, so you can actualy enjoy the money your saving for the house/apartment enjoy it everyday and later in few years sell it and prob earn money on each watch u own or in the worst situation get your momey back, i think its better that then have a pile of cash in the safe or bank acc
Maximum budget for a watch are the savings of 3 months. My rule I set for myself to avoid excessive spendings for watches. And if the watch is to expensive, either I‘ve to work on the salary or on my spending behavior (as described)
Think twice and deep breath. and ask to yourself. do i really need 10k, 20k watch?? why? for what? nobody care what you wearing on your wrist. you can do a lot of thing with that money. I spent more than 60k for watches. however, that is meaningless. Don't do same mistake like me.
When I was in college decades ago, I saved up for a watch I genuinely wanted by purchasing it but putting it on layaway. This way, you can pay a little at a time, as much as you can spare. Doing so not only freezes the price, but allows you to strive for a worthy goal that you truly look forward to achieving. When a person has a goal they have motivation and expectation. You may find that the anticipation is actually more enjoyable than owning. It's like taking a special vacation, looking forward to it is more than half the fun.
Thanks for watching Alex, and for commenting. Never thought about the layaway option, I'm not sure if a watch AD would do that these days but it could be worth looking into, and a better option than using a credit card.
Hi. Thanks for that great insight into buying habits. One question that has been lingering in my head is.. Is the Squale 1521 worth the money? I currently do not have a diver in my collection and intend to add one in and the Squale has really caught my eye but I'm really sceptical.
Thanks for watching I appreciate it. Is the Squale 1521 worth the money? I’ve never had one so I don’t know honestly. That said the $900-$950 price point seems a little steep. But I can’t say one way or another until I get a chance to review one and evaluate it in person.
JustBlueFish Watch Reviews hahaha.. no worries mate!! Well, you should review one then! It'll be awesome if I can get your opinion with regards to the watch after a review.
The best advice I ever received for saving money was to write down every purchase. No matter how small or large and after some period of time (depends on the person) you will see patterns that can be changed so you can save money..
I had this rule where I only let me buy a watch, if I earned its price in one month. Someday last year, I recognized I earned enough in September to buy a Rolex Explorer 2. I´m still liking it a lot.
$75k a year.... = MUR 2,625,000 = MUR 218,750 / month salary in my currency.... Hmm that would be a Top Management Position here (Master's degree+) (I get much less). So basically middle class in the first world is paid 4 to 5 times more than in Africa. Damn... i'd have to wait four years, with an angry wife without nicotine or alchohol! hahahhaah
its really hard to afford a Rolex for a collector spirited guy. but if its going to be your only watch its a very good and logical decision. you get an item that posibly have way more lifespan than you and your child and your grandchild :)
I saw someone comment once that it costs you nothing to own a Rolex, which is perhaps a half truth. If you purchased at a good price there's a fairly reasonable expectation that your Rolex will have a higher resale value than your initial investment.
MAGA. Focus first on making money. And this does not mean a JOB. Find something legal, and beneficial to society that you are good at, and people will pay for, and do that at a reasonable rate. Business to Business is the first place to look because a drop in the bucket for a business can be big bucks towards your hobbies. Then, when things are going good, and you have a little excess cash, would be the time to reward yourself on a little extravagance.
I have to agree with Guy. Buy the BLNR from an AD, as the risk is not worth the savings (if any) on this particular watch. That’s what I did. I had wait about 6 months for the watch and during that time I saved up for it. Good luck.
I just stumbled across this video and wanted to say this is some of the most astute watch buying advice I've ever watched. I agree with absolutely everything you said. Well done!
If you have to give up your coffee in the morning, your movie nights, your dinners with your wife...can you really afford a Rolex?? If I would have to give up all those things just for a watch, I wouldn't even want one! But I guess it's all a matter of how much you really want that Rolex. I do like to spend some time actually doing something else than sitting on my couch, looking at my watch collection, so I guess I'll just have to stick with my Omega(s) instead of a Rolex...
It’s really just examples of how to look at spending habits. Most people don’t have any idea how much they’re actually spending on a weekly or monthly basis. I’m sure if you sat down and spent an hour anyone could find $200 or $300 a month in frivolous spending they could cut from the budget. Those are just some is examples off the top of my head.
I get that, but the liberty of doing something you want, whenever you feel like it, is a luxury too. So you would cut in one luxury aspect of your life to add a luxury item? So its a matter of priorities. I guess I will never understand people who find any other watch brand inferior to Rolex and are willing to sacrifice anything to get that Rolex. I have some expensive watches, but sometimes I'm perfectly happy wearing a €300 Seiko...
My wife was ok with my first 5K watch, since she thought that was going to be a one off purchase - “every man needs one good watch”. Less ok with me adding multiple 500-1000$ watches to the collection. I guess I can understand her. My advice would be to add space between purchases and chose wisely. Set a limit on how many watches you should own.
Just remember what's theirs is theirs and what's yours is theirs. Designer Handbags, jewelry, brand new SUV, constant remodelling all fine. You want a Rolex - 'Don't be stupid, that's a lot of money to tell the time. Go and buy it with your hard earned money, let them have their tantrum then carry on.
Not at all true, most women would want their men to be happy and if it means buying another Rolex, luxury car or whatever, women should be on board with that, it’s a two way street and if they aren’t supportive move onto someone who will be.
Bought my first Submariner and then showed my wife when I took it home. She always saw me wear fake Rollies cuz I always dreamt of having one. She didn’t get mad at all. She said I should have bought it for my birthday, which was the same month :) I drive a 10yr old Honda and she drives a new Acura. I also DJ weddings so that was like $8k a year I made extra? Oh, and we got no kids either :) she was also amazed when I saw the resale values of vintage Rolex.
I agree about buying from a dealer as opposed to used these days. I bought my DateJust II from a dealer and very happy with it. Used prices were not that much of a difference. Sometimes you're buying piece of mind. And I like having the warranty card in my name. I did actually buy from DavidSW a few weeks ago only because the Sea Dweller 116600 was discontinued and I couldn't find any other AD that sold one. It did come with a warranty card stamped 2016, so plenty of warranty left.
It’s a sellers market right now, so on watches that retain value like Rolex I’m not buying preowned or grey market when the potential savings is negligible. Down the road it could obviously change. And like I mentioned that extra layer of protection paid off big time with my Submariner.
Stop taking you wife or girlfriend out once a week and give up everything you enjoy in life just to buy a watch. That means you cannot afford it. I do agree with the quit cigarettes though.
I didn't say stop doing anything all together, I said cut back once a week. If you only do it once a week maybe it's not worth cutting back on that. But I know plenty of people who eat out 3-4 and even more times per week.
I hear what your saying. But I don't think a man should be sacrificing his wife or gfs quality of life on any level just to buy himself a watch. If you really have to sacrifice anything at all for a watch then I would imagine there are things in your life the money could be better spent on. But each to their own. I am single for life, so probably not qualified to comment. But I imagine most women might react by saying she is going to give up the unnecessary little things that cost her but make her man happy....so she can buy herself a Cartier.
Watches are like guitars and motorcycles, you cannot buy them all, but people want to !! Once you get any Rolex, all your cheaper watches are going to seem like trash. Once you get one, sell off your other watches. Only buy steel Rolex sports watches. They hold their value, and the others do not as much. Only the Daytona will hold its value, others not as much. Try to buy a used Daytona somehow.
Mark Edwards that is not true. I bought my GMT2 coke bezel in 2006. I actually used to wear bulovas and seikos prior to my rolex. Now i have learned to appreciate other brands and i am looking to own my first german made watch. I am currently looking for the Sinn 103 SA as my next watch. I am honest, i love my Rolex 16710 GMT 2
JustBlueFish Watch Reviews, I didn’t really I don’t have a wife. I have just finished watching your fantastic indepth Rolex Submariner review. Which Rolex Submariner book do you have in that video? I have a GMT II and hope there is a book on that model too. Thanks
Thanks for watching, that’s actually an issue of Rolex Magazine. Issue number 2 I think. They’ve published 7 or 8 issues so far, you can sometimes find them on eBay.
I’m sure there’s plenty of people that’s been 10 times the amount I suggested in the video and drinking. It’s literally just flushing money down the toilet, glad I don’t drink.
Where I live the thing to do at night is go to a bar, drink and smoke. What a waste. I never smoked and have virtually given up on the booze. Life is much better now.
Excellent advise for anyone and very well put, gently but on focus. Please allow me to be brutally blunt and add a couple more points. Get rid of all those shitter watches they only distract you from your goal since you already know what you really want. Buy from AD, for such a high cost item and knowing there are a few bad new Rolex apples out there they just don't make watches like before, why do you think they offer such a long warranty now? that cost is hidden in the price and where do you think those bad apples end up? grey market of course... they never loose. And lastly, as you get rid of all those cheap watches consider a nice replica, they make them so damm close to the real thing now that with emotions aside wearing a replica will give you the real determination you need to stick to your goal and get the real deal sooner rather than later. Hope I did not offend anyone.
You’re sitting in your apartment, with your significant other. You can’t afford to go out to eat, or see that new movie. Your phone is 7 years old and Netflix is slow and laggy. So now you’re both huddled over your GMT-Master II in silence. That was worth it 😂 If you’re able to save $10,000 a year and really have to have a nice watch with brand recognition, take $3000 and spend it on a Seamaster 300m. Then take $7000 and invest it into something that’s going to turn it into $70,000. Don’t go broke trying to stunt on people. Respect the dude who daily wears a Vostok but retires at 45. I’d rather do that than buy a Rolex at 25 and retire when I’m 75.
Wasting $8,000.00 on a watch is ridiculous if; you owe money on your house. If your house isn’t paid off and obviously paying insane amounts of interest like most home owners, then you can’t afford a ROLEX. And if you rent and considering buying a ROLEX then your just a fool. If your car isn’t paid off,,,also. Basically if you owe anyone any money. Disposable income is when you can spend it after all bills are paid in FULL. Don’t get me wrong Rolex watches are beautiful but not worth the price. You can find many other great watch brands out there that will last you just as long. IMO.
one idea rather than save more is to make more money....everyone is so focused on saving rather than earning. Its easier to earn your way to wealth than save your way. In any case i do really like your message and what your offering on your channel..keep it up buddy!
Good point Drew, thanks for sharing. I saw a story recently, this guy was asked what he did to become so successful and he said you can become successful and all you have to do is work half days. When asked how he could do so much in just 4 hours a day, he said no not 4, I work 12 hours a day.
Great advice on monthly savings. Rolex is about the only high end luxury watch I would buy new from an AD. Keep bargaining, have cash or use cc with high points and pay it in full, travel to other AD's in you larger zone. Don't be intimidated or servile at Rolex AD's or let them know it's your first Rolex, be polite and business like. Some have bought at out of State AD's with no sales tax (Nev). As to grey market, I like Jomashop, would buy an Omega Speedy from them (big discount, no Tax if not in NY), but Rolex not much of a break. Rolex grail piece not practical for daily wear, could scratch it first year. An acquaintance in PA claims he recently purchased a mint pre-owned grail newer model Rolex, at a decent savings, from Jewelers on Time (Newport Beach, CA.) Handled it via phone and internet. I have been in their store and they impressed me as Rolex Gurus. Yelp them. I'm only a hobbyist and collector and these are just my personal thoughts. Good Luck
I think the first question should be - have you considered alternatives? Omega, Brietling, Zenith, IWC, JLC etc etc. There are alternatives that are cheaper and can create a well-rounded collection. For me, starting young, I plan to buy cheaper watches (cheaper being a relative term here) and will probably end on a Rolex or two later on in life. But if a Rolex is your main aim then sure, go for it.
unfortunately, the reason to buy used or gray is no ADs have SS inventory and when one arrives they sell them to their top clients. i wish rolex.com sold direct to customer, or put you on a wait list / back order until one becomes available. the luxury watch market is so behind times.
It would seem like they don’t care, they’re are happy with the state of the current market. I agree, I’d love to see a direct to consumer sales model, but I don’t think that will ever happen with Rolex. They simply don’t want to sell more watches.
Actually the study was huge, long term & based on real world data & out comes. The definitions are conservative & are give in the books. As well, these outcomes have been rechecked over & over. Not the usually campus study, which is grad students filling out questionaires.
Lunch and ...movies and starbucks? Come on that involves socializing, you cant say suspend life for a year to get the perfect watch? Not valid mate. Alcohol, the $1000 phone every year, yes. I mean, in the same vein you could say cycle to work, or use less water or electricity. I advise you not to stop going out on weekends or during workdays with your workmates for lunch which might ease up the confines of office hours and in the end benefit your mental health, for your 'pass to my son' wrist jewelry. Cut the alcohol and phones.
A person can certainly cut less of these suggestions, and just take a longer time to reach their grail, I was just demonstrating and extreme example on how the average person can save $8k inside a year if that’s what they want to do. Also, I know people that eat out 3-4 times a week, and spend hundreds per month on alcohol, cutting back just a portion of that can add up substantialy.
My personal opinion... if you have difficulties saving money for a Rolex watch?? than you have a bigger issue and you should not think about spending money on a watch..... 99,9% of the people don't care you have a Rolex or not.
Timber land if somebody had a Rolex because to show to the others.... I think that person is poor in his personality. Nobody not related with watches do not understand someone has the watch in car price.
your forgetting that 90/95% of the rolex owners don't know what type they actually wearing, they only know its a Rolex and Rolex is for the middleclass a Expensive watch.
Timber land hate to break it to you but a lot of us buy these watches simply because we love watches and the idea they represent. I for one have 0 care if someone compliments my watch, let alone sees it. As long as i see and appreciate it, I’m happy.
Looking for a career advancement is the way to go in my opinion. Keeping an eye on your expenses is very important as well, no doubt, because they tend to grow proportionally to your income :)
I mean just treat it like everything else ( equivalent price car , hobby , etc. ) but the wife might be a lil upset if you’re spending 10k on a watch lmao But if that’s your only hobby or main interest then go at it reasonably
DavidSW is the best. But the way all the steel sports models are now, it's insane. Buy an LV at an AD for 9k, or find one on the gray slightly used for 10k+. BLNR, LVc, basically anything that's not a DJ, you're going to pay more until who knows. Especially this time of year with talk of discontinuing models and Rolex withholding stock. But sound advice. Cut out the fat, but don't sacrifice happiness. Slow and steady to get what you want. Anything contrary and you'll look down at your wrist with disdain. Patience, my friends.
Thanks for watching, but I’m not sure. Watches aren’t really a good investment, and while Rolex typically holds value better than most I’m not sure that applies to their dress watches as equally as there SS sports watches. I’d suggest joining the Rolex Forums and asking some more opinions from some of those guys.
I haven’t thought about it to hard, what would you say is the most you’d spend on a watch at grey market? I think once I start looking at a price tag over $1000 I have to give it some serious thought.
I've seen lots of ppl tried their luck at Las Vegas casinos, some lucky ones managed to buy a Rolex, instead of waiting a year! Sorry i was joking! Lol ;) Enjoy yr Rolex ya....
Spending a lot of time in the financial industry... I would have thought that I would be against spending that kind of money on a watch... honestly though, I would rather see people spending their money on something that doesn’t depreciate like a car, or things like food and alcohol. Sound advice.
These are some great tips. The only thing I can't budge on is the weekly dining out. My GF needs to see that she's my priority over saving for the watch and that's the way I show it to her. I resorted to selling old cameras, watches and freelancing to save up. Now I just need to decide on the model.... That's the fun part :)
Nothing wrong with putting the women in your life first, although there are other options like cooking her dinner at home that serves the same purpose and saves money potentially. Although if I cooked for my wife that would be more of a punishment than anything else, I can’t cook worth a damn.
JustBlueFish Watch Reviews Absolutely. The clean up is what I hate. I love making a mess in the kitchen. And like you said. It’s all about making sure she’s on board first. Appreciate the time you put in to your videos.
One watch collections of really nice do anything piece gives much greater satisfaction than a bunch of cheaper watches by many fold. I wore a Sub 16610 for about ten years before I bought my next nice piece just because it kept me happy. I bought the Omega GSOTM and a Rolex Cellini the same day but got extremely good deals on them-$9,250 for both BNIB. After a couple years I found myself only wearing the GSOTM and decided to trade up to a Patek 5167. It was the best move I ever did. Traded all three of my nice watches plus cash for the BNIB 5167 and still managed to come out on top as far as money spent since the Sub 16610 had gained even though I literally wore it every day for ten years. So now two years later I’m wearing a Patek 5711/1R as an only watch besides an Apple watch 2 until I can purchase a beater Omega GSOTM/DSOTM, Rolex no date, or some other do everything piece that’s waterproof and won’t have to worry about it. Then the process will start all over again. I’ll either build up the smaller pieces or purchase a few smaller pieces ($5k-$10k) to put with my 5711/1R to trade up for a Grande comp by Patek, A Lange & Sohne, or FP Journe. Once one wears a truly high horology piece it’s like your eyes are opened for the first time. VC makes some great pieces for the money too but they aren’t for a flipper that’s trying to move up like myself. I just don’t make enough money to lose on very many purchases. I need to break even or lose very little which can be looked at as the cost of wearing it for the time period I owned it. Hope that helped lol.
I can afford to buy a new Patek ... btw, with Rolex and Patek, ALWAYS buy from an authorized dealer... Rolex will usually get 10% off if you're serious and a cash buyer... Patek is going to be full price, and if you go gray market on a Nautilus, you're looking at a $10-15000 premium over retail.
just got a new 116618LB (Gold / Blue) Sub.. 20% off from my AD... I'm quite sure over the long run I will make money on this watch, especially with gold showing now sign of getting cheaper.
People spend their money on what they value. Some value cars, some value restaurant meals, some value attending ballgames, some value watches. Great video.
Yeah that's exactly right. All of these things are luxuries. I just suggest that if you can't afford them all you prioritize which ones are most important to you.
I have tag 2000s, omega po 2500, Panerai 312, Tudor BB 41 over 25 years.. 😂 sold Tudor and Panerai to get 114060 at 48..best time to get Rolex now..just let it come naturally..luxury watches should be the least priority. Don’t need to deprive your life over one watch..if you need cut so much just for a watch means you can’t afford it..
Great video. People don't realize how much money they spend on a daily basis, me included. I bought a Submariner form an AD and it was seriously with a couple of hundred dollars from the BEST used price I could find, plus I got the warranty and mine came out of the vault and I was the first person to handle it since the manufacturer. Might not be a big deal for some , but I thought that was pretty cool since this was the first "luxury " timepiece I have ever bought. Great video and great advice. I will be using it to get my GMT.
Steve Tackett ha you sound like me Steve, I am saving for the 116610LN, and I want a new one not used, because the price is not enough to squabble over, plus I want to be the original owner of it like yourself so thats what I will do as well an AD for sure!!! It dies make a difference to me as well being the first to wear it!!!
I have an amazing Seiko watch collection, and I would never dream of trading them in for a Rolex. I just never wanted to spring for 10,000 dollars for a new Rolex. Frankly, I am not rich enough to spend that kind of money on a watch in one purchase..
Thanks for watching I appreciate it. There's nothing wrong with collecting Seiko watches, or anything else for that matter. If that's what you prefer and what you enjoy go with it. Ever consider trying to add a Grand Seiko in the future?
JustBlueFish - Yes, I had considered the Grand Seiko, but never jumped on one. I think I love the "every day man's" Seiko watches. I like the vintage Seiko's in particular. Seiko became what it is because it offered a great watch at a great price, that anyone could afford to own. Buying a Grand Seiko is a little to rich for my blood, Lol. I enjoy your reviews, by the way. Take care.
Great points, and I agree Seiko has a TON of great affordable watches in their catalog. Which ones in your collection are your favorites? I regret letting my SARB033 go, I may need to replace it at some point.
JustBlueFish - I have the SARB037 "Army". Love it. I also have some affection for my vintage Seiko's. The old 70s SK series are beautiful. I have quite a few of the inexpensive but interesting Seiko "5"s. Seiko fives are jeweled automatics for a pittance of cost, and can't beat them. I do like my Kinetics, with Sapphire crystals. The Seiko "S-Wave" are another fantastically reliable, accurate, affordable timepiece. I love all my Seiko diver's and where do I stop about my Alpinist's ? Too many for too long. But we love our watches, don't we?...
For investment purposes, it may be a good idea depending upon ones situation to invest in a Rolex as they may give better short term returns than say an inherited retirement account. Also, its never a good idea to place all of ones eggs in one basket so to speak.
Good advice. We spend googobs of money on BS. Just look at your debit card statement. My wife spends thousands on junk. I've tried to tell her to just cut back. Oh I'm buying a rollie in 2 months.
1. Thanks for the video. I agree with your comment about the AD but really only for Rolex. Never buy used online from an Untrusted source the risk of fakes is way higher than people think. Personally I’ve found if you can create a relationships with a grey market dealer who owns an actual store, they give better deals and they have to stand behind them, but for Rolex steel sports watch no deals to be had right now. 2. A lot of comments hating on cutting back to buy something important...? You all might not care about wearing a Rolex but this guy really wants one! And if treated right he will be able to enjoy it for life. So yeah, cutting back isn’t fun but it’s a great way to save for something important. And the bottom line is that for most of us, we aren’t going to get our holy grail watch, AND eat out all the time AND buy a bunch of other watches AND drink $5 coffee everyday, etc etc. So do you want to be the guy with 20 seikos? Or do you want to save for your dream watch? 3. Last thing, I’ve collected for a long time, on the first big one like this Rolex gmt, don’t buy used. It will mean more if it’s YOUR watch. Especially if it’s the center of a collection.
A Rolex is a want not a need. It's a brand. Much cheaper watches can look just as good and probably keep better time, the Hamilton Khaki 38mm auto' field watch for instance. I think Guy compared his with a Rolex and seemed to prefer the Hamilton in my opinion. Oh! and don't forget the servicing costs on a Rolex.
If you need to suppress your lifestyle to buy something it means you cant afford it. The problem here is that the watch that you want is not even available for purchase unless you want to pay resellers and pay double the price. 😉
I will not sit here and criticize those wanting a rolex vs those that can actually afford one. If you have to save up for one, then you cant afford it. But That's a topic for another day. I will however criticize this video for its fantastic financial advice. Nicely done. Whether you agree with him or not, it's a good breakdown on how to save money.
Basically don't spend money on anything. Never leave your home except for work and Eat only ketchup everyday and soon you'll have enough money to buy an "entry level" Rolex
@JustBlueFish Watch Reviews - Definitely agree buy from an AD. Don't know about other Rolex's but with the Sub all the used ones are usually at or even above retail! so absolutely buy from an AD that's what I plan on doing when I have enough saved up, good video.
I have set my mind on a Submariner steel version, and I know what A.D. I am going to buy it at. But I am not sure if I want to go date og no date. However there is time enough to make that decision since I am nowhere near the money yet. I have create a seperate bank account for the purpose and I am going to put money into it every month.
Another great benefit you get from buying luxury watches from Switzerland is ' someone has to pay all these celebrity endorsements. What would Lady Gaga do without Tudor endorsements, or the luxury art shows, yacht racing, airplane racing, formula 1, footballer endorsements. Who is going to pay for this? They NEED you luxury watch buyers. would you want to see Lady Gaga working the drive thru window earning some extra $ ? That would be scarry. Can you image how much more it will cost to go see yacht racing, or airplane racing, or some other rich pass time. The cost may sky rocket! and now your participation is needed more then ever! Just before Beijing's crack down on corruption the Chinese nationals represented over 70 % of all luxury watch sales in the USA. You everyday luxury watch buyer now needs to step up & do their part. At least till china relaxes the corruption crack down. Hayek needs you too! You can't let them down. Lady gaga needs you & a host of soccer players etc. The yacht racing community needs you! Dig deeper! Make greater sacrifies! This is important. 😊
JustBlueFish Watch Reviews plus I do agree that too many celebs endorse things. Almost turns me off a products since I don't care fir any endorsements. I find it strange people like that anyway. If you are famous for something, I guess what ever. Why would I care that someone pays you to say you like something. And since I don't care for celebs or watch sports, i guess I wouldn't be moved by this anyway. Since I spent my career in marketing I am rather jaded anyway. Get a kick out of them creating Buzz on something. Amusing.
That’s one way to save for it. I’m going to do it differently which will take longer. Send extra $ to current debts. Once debt free (except house) then it will be really easy to save for the grail. Until then I’ll enjoy my lesser expensive watches. More in line with a Dave Ramsey Debt snowball. Using money towards debt rather then a watch.
GO DAVE RAMSY!!! paying off the debt is 1000 times better than a rolex. and if you dont own a home and have a well funded retirement you are foolish to by a rolex you cant really afford.
I won't say you are an idiot for your AD advice to a point. The models most of us watch nerds want ie the newest rendition steel Professional Models are almost a no-brainer buy at an AD especially if you can get a little off and maybe skip the sales tax. PM, Two Tone and non-professional models like Datejust and Day-Date a totally different story in regards to Gray Market and Pre-Owned. David SW actually helped me make my decision to get on the waitlist at my AD for a Daytona C which I got in three months when he totally blew me off when I tried to get him down off of 12K for 116520 Daytona and could get a new one for $12,400.
Wow you got a Daytona in 3 months? That's fantastic. I've done business with DavidSW once in the past, and it went fine, but I guess I'm not surprised that he wouldn't want to work out any deals on that watch. That's great that you found one so quickly though, congrats and enjoy it.
Thanks for watching Stephen. I'd guess you could get a pre-owned OP 36 for under $5k. There's some under that price on capetownstore.com under that price.
Thanks Brad, best of luck. If it’s something you want to do you can make it happen. All I suggest is that you’d be trading one set of luxuries (dining out, movies, etc) for something else (a watch). It’s not really a sacrifice in the general sense, you’re not giving up necessities.
JustBlueFish Watch Reviews exactly! I also like to think that a watch is something you can wear all day everyday for the rest of your life, a fancy diner will leave you at some point lol 😂. I don’t want to sound materialistic, but I’d rather spend my money on material things that will last, if that makes sense 👍🏻. I enjoy your content man, keep it up!
That’s all true, and you can always liquidate a Rolex for a small loss at worse if you need to. You’re never getting that money you spent on cigars and scotch back. Thanks for watching I appreciate it.
Have no life for a year and you can have a Watch. I had one and I did not do any of this. If your not a saver your not a saver. White collar worker before you make assumptions on pay. You likely make more. 😂
One alternative perspective: eating out and visiting the cinema with your loved one isn’t “wasting money”, it’s actually more valuable than any Rolex.
It’s not “wasting money” in the sense that you’re enjoying the company of a loved one, however there’s plenty of more affordable alternatives that can achieve the goal of saving for your grail and being with your significant other.
It depends if the activity that you are planning to cut out gives you Joy or not. To grab a Coffee on the Go is just laziness imho
Andy Garton Or just be happy with something that isn't actually a Rolex! Perfectly happy with my marinemaster 300!
shagging is usually free
Living your life, and enjoying it with your loved one doesn`t classify as "wasting money" in my opinion.
Buy from a Rolex AD in a state that has no sales tax, eg Delaware, Montana, Oregon, New Hampshire!
Thanks for watching.
Remy Hors d'âge good idea!
Stop living and buy a watch???
I'm not sure I'd consider cutting back on frivolous spending the end of life. I know people that eat out for dinner 4-5 nights a week, as much as 20 times a month. I'm suggesting cutting that back by 1-2 times a week, and a few other suggestions to make the goal of owning a Rolex (or any expensive luxury item) a reality inside of a year. It's simply trading 1 set of luxuries for another. It's all about what you want more. Neither is wrong, pick your poison.
Is not stop living... it is stop wasting
I would really like to trade in my brain and get one like yours.
hahaha, that's the funniest comment I've gotten in a long time! But trust me you don't want to be stuck in my head, it can be a scary place...
Thanks for watching David, solid advice.
Just a VSF 😂 VSF can even fool Rolex employees. Rolex are overpriced watched made for a fraction of that price litey
Maximum budget for a watch are the savings of 3 months. My rule I set for myself to avoid excessive spendings for watches.
And if the watch is to expensive, either I‘ve to work on the salary or on my spending behavior (as described)
Cutting out booze? That’s just crazy talk!
Right? You need to be at least somewhat drunk to drop $10,000 on a watch anyway.
Lol!!!!
Throw it on a low interest CC then make a game out of scraping together the money to pay it off ASAP. Worked for me.
Think twice and deep breath. and ask to yourself. do i really need 10k, 20k watch?? why? for what? nobody care what you wearing on your wrist. you can do a lot of thing with that money. I spent more than 60k for watches. however, that is meaningless. Don't do same mistake like me.
Thanks for watching and good advice.
John Doe These can be seen as types of investments.
I seriously doubt that any AD would allow
A Rolex to be lay awayed considering the demand and steady price increase of that brand..but good luck.
Thanks for watching good suggestion.
You are more then welcome. It is a technique that has never failed me and I hope other people find it useful.
I do that too, with an app on my phone. Everything is written down!
I had this rule where I only let me buy a watch, if I earned its price in one month.
Someday last year, I recognized I earned enough in September to buy a Rolex Explorer 2.
I´m still liking it a lot.
Thanks for watching.
$75k a year.... = MUR 2,625,000 = MUR 218,750 / month salary in my currency.... Hmm that would be a Top Management Position here (Master's degree+) (I get much less). So basically middle class in the first world is paid 4 to 5 times more than in Africa. Damn... i'd have to wait four years, with an angry wife without nicotine or alchohol! hahahhaah
This definitely doesn’t work results in an angry wife!
its really hard to afford a Rolex for a collector spirited guy. but if its going to be your only watch its a very good and logical decision. you get an item that posibly have way more lifespan than you and your child and your grandchild :)
I saw someone comment once that it costs you nothing to own a Rolex, which is perhaps a half truth. If you purchased at a good price there's a fairly reasonable expectation that your Rolex will have a higher resale value than your initial investment.
If you have to ask, can I afford a Rolex? You can’t.... #1 Stop wasting money on crap watches! #2 GET OUT OF DEBT! Great advise. I love my BLNR.
Thanks for watching.
Now those are wise words to live by!
Quick answer: it's a watch. It tells time. You don't need to spend thousands of dollars. Save it for Real stuff. Don't buy stupid expensive things
I have to agree with Guy. Buy the BLNR from an AD, as the risk is not worth the savings (if any) on this particular watch. That’s what I did. I had wait about 6 months for the watch and during that time I saved up for it.
Good luck.
Thanks for watching and for the feedback I appreciate it.
Reading the comments it seems all the pathetic people have to buy coffee how about buy a percolator and make it yourself
Coffee is life... but only when it costs $5 a cup!
I just stumbled across this video and wanted to say this is some of the most astute watch buying advice I've ever watched. I agree with absolutely everything you said. Well done!
Thanks William, appreciate you watching and for the feedback.
M De Smet I agree. Stop living and start saving for a Watch does not appeal to me. I would do that for a Kidney transplant not for a watch lol.
Georgie B, you sound like a very mature person, so I'm honoured to get your opinion
the woman will never be on board with spending 10k on a watch.
Depends on the woman I suppose.
Or you can enjoy life and just not worry about a Rolex!!
That's just crazy talk!
JustBlueFish Watch Reviews Honesty, the only Rolex I would almost like to have is an Explorer but it doesn't have a day and date!
Got the money. But there is that 3-5years waiting list in my country :/
You shouldn't be buying a Rolex if you can't comfortably afford to walk in an AD and buy it retail price.
I don’t want them all but I could use a new guitar. A nice Les Paul would be cool! Thanks for watching!
Good luck getting a discount off a steel sports Rolex from an AD in the current climate!
Yeah it might be a couple months before that window opens again.
Very helpful, and I really appreciate your advice.
Thanks Brian I appreciate the feedback.
I asked my wife to get a third job.
How’d that go over?
JustBlueFish Watch Reviews, I didn’t really I don’t have a wife. I have just finished watching your fantastic indepth Rolex Submariner review. Which Rolex Submariner book do you have in that video? I have a GMT II and hope there is a book on that model too. Thanks
Thanks for watching, that’s actually an issue of Rolex Magazine. Issue number 2 I think. They’ve published 7 or 8 issues so far, you can sometimes find them on eBay.
you should buy a Rolex, if it costs less than a net month wage - easy
Thanks for watching.
Not drinking saves you sooooo much money. And it's one of the best changes you can make for a positive direction in life, and possibly your health.
I’m sure there’s plenty of people that’s been 10 times the amount I suggested in the video and drinking. It’s literally just flushing money down the toilet, glad I don’t drink.
amen to that. health is the MOST valuable asset. without health you have nothing else.
Thanks for watching Lakes, I appreciate it.
You’re sitting in your apartment, with your significant other. You can’t afford to go out to eat, or see that new movie. Your phone is 7 years old and Netflix is slow and laggy. So now you’re both huddled over your GMT-Master II in silence. That was worth it 😂
If you’re able to save $10,000 a year and really have to have a nice watch with brand recognition, take $3000 and spend it on a Seamaster 300m. Then take $7000 and invest it into something that’s going to turn it into $70,000. Don’t go broke trying to stunt on people. Respect the dude who daily wears a Vostok but retires at 45. I’d rather do that than buy a Rolex at 25 and retire when I’m 75.
Thanks for watching.
IMO.
Thanks for watching.
If you have to ask if you can afford it, you can't.
If you can't afford to buy it twice, you can't afford it. Simple.
Thanks for watching.
That's a good rule of thumb.
Hell with that advice I would have never been happily married 13 years ago! Lol!
I thought the rule was "three of them". If you can't buy three of something you can't really afford it
My goal is a $25,000 watch how fucked am I?
one idea rather than save more is to make more money....everyone is so focused on saving rather than earning.
Good Luck
Thanks for watching JP. Some good advice here.
Most good grey market dealers will refund your money immediate if there was an issue (DavidSW would...)
Thanks for watching and commenting I appreciate it.
There are a host of great options on the market, considering alternatives is a great suggestion.
Very good, informative video - great job
Thanks for watching Priv.
unfortunately, the reason to buy used or gray is no ADs have SS inventory and when one arrives they sell them to their top clients. i wish rolex.com sold direct to customer, or put you on a wait list / back order until one becomes available. the luxury watch market is so behind times.
Thanks for watching I appreciate it.
Exactly
Thanks for watching.
Thanks for watching and sharing your feedback I appreciate it, I hope you enjoyed the video.
Which is better investment? The datejust with diamonds or without. Two tone 41.
Definitely agree with buying a high end watch from the AD, especially if you have a good relationship with your AD.
I haven’t thought about it to hard, what would you say is the most you’d spend on a watch at grey market? I think once I start looking at a price tag over $1000 I have to give it some serious thought.
1000 is probably where id start. I also take into consideration service costs, and cost to replace beacelets and straps.
I've seen lots of ppl tried their luck at Las Vegas casinos, some lucky ones managed to buy a Rolex, instead of waiting a year! Sorry i was joking! Lol ;) Enjoy yr Rolex ya....
Bitcoin would probably be a safer bet than Vegas right now. If you have $1000 to invest maybe you’ll run it up to $10k by the end of 2018.
Great advice ! Well done.
Spending a lot of time in the financial industry... I would have thought that I would be against spending that kind of money on a watch... honestly though, I would rather see people spending their money on something that doesn’t depreciate like a car, or things like food and alcohol. Sound advice.
Thanks for watching and for commenting Wes.
Spending money to share experiences with your loved ones is much more valuable (to me) than a watch.
You can do both.
If you need to stop buying coffee every morning to save up the money .... please don’t buy a Rolex
Why, it’s a luxury just like the watch. Choose the one you want more if you can’t afford both. There’s nothing special about either.
JustBlueFish Watch Reviews
Absolutely. The clean up is what I hate. I love making a mess in the kitchen.
And like you said. It’s all about making sure she’s on board first. Appreciate the time you put in to your videos.
Thanks I appreciate it.
Took me two years to save up for my white gold gmt Pepsi such a grail
Awesome, congrats. That's a keeper for sure.
BTW, Let me know if I can borrow it for a review!
Murica's Modeling Headquarters Congrats!
Nice, thanks for sharing. I’m not good at flipping and moving up. I always lose money.
Cigarettes, $10 a pack in New York
They were $6 when I quit. No idea what they are now.
auxmike jeez....coffin nails aside, the price alone is reason enough to quit or not start in the first place!
I got about 12% on my Ceramic Submariner from AD. So yeah with that discount it was a better price than going grey or 2nd hand.
just got a new 116618LB (Gold / Blue) Sub.. 20% off from my AD... I'm quite sure over the long run I will make money on this watch, especially with gold showing now sign of getting cheaper.
Have a Rolex without life. If I really need a Rolex because I can live ?
I would take a loan and live life.
Thanks for watching Krystian I appreciate it.
Sell and buy it. If you can't aford it stop being silly about it....
Thanks for watching I appreciate it.
The greatest things in life are worth the sacrifice. Nothing great comes easy. If you have want this watch that bad, go get it!
Well said, very true.
2:51 ... "Ughhh - I'm married ... :/"
Sorry I can't suggest a divorce lawyer lol!
My question is; if you're not a submariner, why wear a submariner?
Well I’m not a Submariner but I did save a bunch of money by switching to Geico!
I can do without alcohol.
Nobody really ''needs'' a piece of jewelery like that.
Thanks for watching I appreciate it.
Thanks for watching and the feedback.
I’ve been to 10 ADs in 2 countries in the past two months and none had an SS submariner or BLNR gmt master in stock
Wow, that's rough. I've seen more than a few in the last 2 months, although the past week nothing.
For investment purposes, it may be a good idea depending upon ones situation to invest in a Rolex as they may give better short term returns than say an inherited retirement account. Also, its never a good idea to place all of ones eggs in one basket so to speak.
Thanks for watching.
My retirement package is a fast car, bottle of whiskey and a big wall :)
Mines not much better.
Good advice. We spend googobs of money on BS. Just look at your debit card statement. My wife spends thousands on junk. I've tried to tell her to just cut back. Oh I'm buying a rollie in 2 months.
Also, always buy used and never pay tax! He’s right, the Batman GMT is a rock solid investment an is holding its value.
You can also buy from an out of state AD and have it shipped to avoid the sales tax.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to share the thoughtful comment Cooper. Great points and advice. I appreciate it.
Good video produced, thumbs up 👍
Thanks Patrick I appreciate it.
Excellent advice
Thanks for watching.
If you need to suppress your lifestyle to buy something it means you cant afford it. The problem here is that the watch that you want is not even available for purchase unless you want to pay resellers and pay double the price. 😉
Basically live as a shut in for a few years and you'll be fine :)
Exactly
Thanks for watching!
Now you’re getting a little silly, every brand advertises in one form or another and even Seiko pays for celebrity endorsements.
JustBlueFish Watch Reviews but on how many units is that spread out over. And someone has to pick up the slack!
JustBlueFish Watch Reviews but on how many units is that spread out over. And someone has to pick up the slack!
Paying off debt first is always a sound strategy. Good luck, and stay focused - it’ll all come together in the end.
GO DAVE RAMSY!!! paying off the debt is 1000 times better than a rolex. and if you dont own a home and have a well funded retirement you are foolish to by a rolex you cant really afford.
Wake up, work, go home, look at the wall...there you go, there's your Rolex. Life's for living mate. FFS!
The vast majority of people do that routine anyway and aren't saving for a Rolex, or anything else. Good to have goals.
Citizen is an underated watch brand
I've only had the opportunity to check out one Citizen watch, the Nighthawk, but it was very nice.
JustBlueFish Watch Reviews I recently bought this one. Citizen diver BN0150-28E. On a black mesh strap it looks beautiful. Got it new for $140
Those Promaster divers look pretty cool, congrats.
Really great advice: sound and simple. Now I know how to get that Oyster Perpetual no-date 36. Think I can get that new for under 5 grand?
Thanks for watching Stephen. I'd guess you could get a pre-owned OP 36 for under $5k. There's some under that price on capetownstore.com under that price.
JustBlueFish Watch Reviews They have one for 4,300.00
Thanks for the advice. And it's new -wow!
@@JustBlueFish Since Capetown isn't an official retailer I wouldn't buy a new watch there. Just not worth the risk.
Amazing topic! It gave me motivation to keep saving for my Sub. Definitely going to trim the fat!
Thanks for watching.
