    Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
    We put out 2 new videos every week! Wednesday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

    The waterer has been out for a few days now and I am happy to report they are all using it. Yesterday was 92 degrees and I saw many of them standing on the pavers for several minutes, so it doesn't appear they are getting too hot. The waterer was in the sun during the video but isn't in full sun all day.

      Completely agree. I patterned my rabbits after their rabbit series when I started years ago--the best out there in my opinion. Now I've got 15 meat chickens brooding in my basement for the first time and will tractor them in my front yard beginning next week. So far the neighbors have been supportive of my urban homestead. I have learned a lot from. Kevin and Sarah.

    Great idea, Kevin. For drilling the holes without all that pesky measuring, I would fill the bucket with water to the float level and drill the holes from the inside with the hole saw just above the water level. Eliminates any opportunity to mis-measure and possibly have water run constantly. Excellent video.

    The problem we have with a setup like this is the hose heats up the water, then disperses scalding hot water. You would almost need a water source with the shortest hose possible to not heat up the water in the hose.

    • @mamiebobb4173
      @mamiebobb4173 3 роки тому +7

      I think we all underestimate just how hot it's getting out there (and the fact is, it's only going to get hotter!). In addition to the hot water in the hose, those pavers are going to be radiating a lot of heat themselves. I'd like to see the whole set up placed under shade at least.

    • @FreeAmerican
      @FreeAmerican 3 роки тому +4

      It might be an issue if the birds were drinking directly from the hose, but they are not. Any hot water from the hose will be diluted into the numerous gallons of water already in the tub. No chance the birds will be scalded.
      Many farmers do not have a water source by every location so that a short hose could be used. If you are moving your birds across your pasture, long hoses may be the best option. Placing multiple water drops at every possible location so short hoses can always be used may be rather expensive.

I saw another comment about maybe using some shade cloth, which i thought was a pretty good idea. Would also give them a place to scurry to if a hawk flew over. Granted, i think the hawk would have to be talented to actually make a strike in The Moat, but it might make the chickens feel more secure.

    Be sure to follow up with the modifications you are going to do. Right off I would suggest a wire mesh cone over the top to prevent chickens jumping up on to the rim of your bucket as they are indiscriminate where they leave their droppings. The younger chickens could also use the rim of the water "bucket" as a launching roost to leave the moat. Or you might need to do another cattle panel hoop structure over the watering station. Innovative design though I like it.

    Started at 6 am this morning on making the 5 gallon bucket waterer you did several years ago. Waiting on my neighbor to get home to see if he has the size of hole saw I need.
    🧐 8:15pm still no sign of him yet. Lol
    All day long... I've been impatiently waiting..... can't wait to see if it'll work for me. I took the parts "float valve" off my old swamp cooler that got replaced by AC last year, already had an empty blue 5 gallon bucket since I ran out of bird seed. l also had the spigot adapters too and found a old roll of waterline just long enough to run to the coop... so no money spent so far! Yay yay yay. Thank you for your simple method. My back is jacked so filling up the chickens waterers all the time does not help. This is definitely gonna be helpful. Now I just need a strong man around to carry bags of feed and help me with all my other 100s of projects and ideas. Lol

    Kevin! So glad to see this video! I used to have 26 ducks that we rehomed last year. But we miss them terribly and have wanted to get a few again, but i really needed a better way of watering them. Because like you said, they're a mess, not to mention having to fill baby pools 2 or 3 times a day. High maintenance! I saw your video using the 5 gallon bucket with the other type of float valve. I thought it was a good idea and the ducks could drink but also dip their heads and clean out their nostrils as they need, without splashing it all out. Well i have a small 45 gallon pond form that i used to have set up inside a large tractor tire with water plants. But after i got the ducks, i had to retire it bc they just destroyed the set up. So I'm looking on the web for float valves when i see one just like this one you used here. Im going to dig a hole and put the form in the ground next to my house and use the box type float valve. This way they can drink and bathe, the chickens can drink and the dog can drink! For winter, i am thinking about making a 5 gallon bucket waterer with the other float for drinking and they can bathe when we get rain. Btw, i live in NWArkansas, probably less than 2 hours from your town, so we have the same weather etc. We haven't had but a couple weeks of weather cold enough this year to freeze their water. So my 5 hens and 1 roo have a big plastic pan that is doing the job just fine. But spring is coming and there's clean up to do soon. And we're thinking of getting a couple rabbits too, so some rearranging, new feeders and waterers are in order!

    For future ease, you could also use painters tape and put it across the metal portion of the float then puncture the tape to mark the holes. Then remove the tape from the metal box and place it on the spot where you need to drill holes. Drill through the punctured areas in the tape.

    I think a flush valve at the bottom would be handy on this. Maybe installed under the float valve.

      Just FYI did you know that using only capital letters is considered yelling, whenever you text a message? Just saying, this is just letting you know in case you didn't know.

    Those pavers are going to get very hot on their feet. What about a paddling pool or pond for them I know not every breed likes to get into water but it’s natural for them.

    If you have some scissors (I have some OLFA scissors which are older than 10 years and are still really sharp) with a nice polished back with almost right angles and only a fine deburred edge you can use the back of the scissors to remove/deburr the strands of plastic at the holes with ease. With a knife you can cut notches or dents into it.

    When you use the hole saw run it in reverse that way you have a cleaner hole when you are cutting plastic and you won't have to clean the edge with a knife. Just a thought.

    I never thought of making a chicken waterer out of it. Going on vacation soon and that could be the solution. I'm thinking of adapting something between pens so it can work off one hose.
