We need a 2020 version or any alternatives for these Sunair fans, GP!
"it'll blow your hair off, literally" 100% of people watching look straight at your head... Yep.
Absolutely!
lol... I was going to make the same joke except it's about 10 months too late now... I think I might have accidentally stood in front of that fan too... was wondering what happened
I've got two of those chrome fans, think they are 20" diameter connected to remote switches and they are fantastic, I actually like the wide spread that they have. Obviously I was inspired by you, thanks..
Wish I watch this video months ago! You probably remember me asking the awkward question about the next level of saddle sores. I was getting sweat puddles big enough to have their own ocean names. Cost me badly though, had to pull out of my biggest race ever Decaman uk. Fans are a must! you were right about the remote control for the beginning of a race. You live and learn.
+1 for an update 2020 version!
wonderful information. great stuff. thanks for the great work.
I love that moment of silence when you say "Blows your hair off" :D
Mr Miller, I'm a fan of this vlog! Just got my Neo smart 3 days ago and have already done over 100 Km accumulatively. Felt sort of guilty eating pizza for lunch today because it was the exact equivalent - 6 slices.. Anyhow thanks for the tip on the remote! Waaaay less lag than calling my wife and having her come down to turn it on.
Those fans look nice but are probably tough to find in North america. The one I use is an old honeywell and looks to be the same size. I use it on the medium setting and feel like I could benefit from an additional unit. Perhaps I'll buy a second for my next ride. Thanks for your contribution in this space. The vlog you made of the Neo / Zwift session in the snow put me way over the edge!! :)
I use two fans. One straight in front and another to the site of me. Great tip about the remote control!
100% humidity at the moment in Sydney and my current fan has 3 speeds; loud, really loud, and unbelievably loud. None seem to actually move any air that I can notice.
I knew The Lama would have a good tip on a fan, and recalled this video. Thanks for the tip Shane, 50 bucks worth of Sunair goodness now coming my way. I must confess I passed on the rectal thermometer and hope that one works out for you ;)
Nice one! It's 110% humidity in the new/empty underground carpark below I was just riding around in here in Mascot. Thick as soup! I hope the footage Von took works out... I was pulling maaaad skids. :)
@@gplama hi Shane. 5y later, is this the setup you still recommend? Or in the meantime you got a better option? TY.
@@-P-Z- The Kickr Headwind is a neat solution now days, or any other directional fan that throws out a LOT of air. Google search 'vornado' for another good option.
Thanks for the video. Right in time as it gets colder in Germany now i want to build a indoor setup for the winter.
Open a window or door. Put the undirectional(but much cheaper)vent between you and the door. Win! Simply because you not only want to reduce the heat around your body bubble, but the room temperature in general, as well. If you do not provide enough cooling for the room, all heat will build up, no matter if you're using directional or undirectional ventilator. Saving heat is what a house is supposed to do...;)
Best I had so far: Dyson AM07.
A friend borrowed it to me. Remote control, perfect form of air stream (just have to raise it a little), 10 steps of speed adjustment. Unfortunately extremely expensive.
Currently I use a Honeywell HT-900E. Which looks similar to yours but smaller. It costs 1/10th of the Dyson and is working quite well. Lately I got a tower ventilator as addition but as you said the directional air flow (with the honeywell) is much better.
I have my set up in the garage and live in a sub tropical climate. The garage lets in a lot of heat. I have a window ac unit and one fan blowing on me from the front. After watching this video I will invest in a couple of directionals and a remote switch. I'd also like to know about those tv stands too. Very pro. Thanks again Shane. Right.. time to ride my birthday century!
Those TV stands are covered in my blog post "Winter is Coming". Here's the link: gplama.blogspot.com.au/2016/05/winter-is-coming-upgrade-your-bike-cave.html
Shane Miller Thanks Shane. I do need to dive into those blogs.
thanks for the tip, Shane. I always put the fan directly in front of me, now I'll try it off to the side.
I wish I could keep an indoor cycling cave set up all the time. Winter is coming here and I will be re-watching many of your videos.
I got a pretty cheap fan from Big W that came with a remote control, works great.
love, love the remote idea. The search is on now for remote outlet controller. Too many times I get into the workout and wonder why its so damn hot. Oops, forgot to turn the fan on.
Portable air con unit and a couple of large pedestal fans! Not cheap....but it's not worth being uncomfortable unless it's your legs!
Keep these vids coming Shane! Definitely the best cycling tech youtuber out there atm. Love it!
Great video Shane, looking forward to more when you get time!
Just what I was looking for. Awesome!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
It would be amazing if this remote power control could also adjust the speed of the fans. I like to start with no fan, then maybe fan at settings 1 or 2, then full on 3 when the workout gets really tough. Guess I'll just by a fan with a remote control..
Good idea about the remote. I'm waiting on your trainer reviews to test my two fan setup.
If I put this kind of fans on a tall shelf. It is possible to turn down the fan over the vertical position. You turn them up. As you are above the fans when on the bike. But what about the opposite direction of rotation? Is it in some way limited from the frame? Thanks
Sweet tips as always!! I've been assessing my fan situation and need an upgrade. Look no more :-)
Another great video, Shane. Glad to see you back on here. You worried me a bit after your last post.
Brian Hillebrand
Nice setup but having the monitors so high i find makes your neck sore so i mount mine at around 45 degrees on the floor.
Awesome Shane...
We were wondering what fans you used..
Unatanium in VIC.. but Straco general hardware stores in other states sell them.. Ordered a couple through a mate in Adelaide.
I love this channel! THanks!
Thanks for sharing mate... Great tips...
Don't forget, if using a wind braked trainer the fans can influence the power reading. this is not a problem if using a crank based power meter or other direct measurement power meter.
Excellent tip! What's your thoughts on air pressure and humidity impacting power curves on wind brake trainers? Altitude has a HUGE impact as SLane and I saw up at Falls Creek on the LeMond Revolution trainers... I was curious to know if there are other factors that come into play.
It is just like aero drag in a TT, it is all about the air density, so temp, altitude humidity and the ergo fan Cda will change the speed/power curve of the ergo fan. Also turbulence created by a cooling fan can change the airflow around the ergo fan, sort of a like getting a sit on a wheel on the road.
Air braked ergo's feel good to ride because the load increases in a similar way as it does on the road, however the same air density and flow factors come in to play.
Smudged your eye shadow ;-/ Great informative video many thanks again
Nice tips Shane. Just started a spin studio and was wondering the best cooling set up would be
I didn't mention that these fans are pretty quiet as well... that'd be a good thing if you are planning on having lots of them cranking up!
Where is the reference to the genius who first implemented the remote control idea!!! You owe me a coffee lama!
Don't set the aircon on 17 (it won't get there anyway), set it on dry mode, the 2 drops of water on the aircon display, makes the room much more comfortable.
Hey Shane, why arn't your curls flying around when you turn the fans on? 😂 (Seems you and me go to the same hairdresser 😋
I'm super interested in what you use to control the PC/lappy once you are on the bike and working out Shane. I've been trying an app to use my phone as a remote mouse and keyboard. Not perfect, but better than stepping off and walking up to the laptop to get rid of some update notice or other rubbish...
Wireless keyboard/mouse combo are a must have. Covered here: gplama.blogspot.com.au/2016/05/winter-is-coming-upgrade-your-bike-cave.html
very nice video ;) good tips, i have never used my trainer except the night i got it, was sweating buckets in minutes.
ride safe
Could you do a walkthrough of the complete paincave setup? I'm liking the small alienware computer and monitor stands!
I might need to do one on just the stands. Lots of queries about those! In the mean time, here's all the info you're after on my blog: gplama.blogspot.com.au/2016/05/winter-is-coming-upgrade-your-bike-cave.html
Yes, those stands look the part! Thnx m8!
Hey Shane, My pain cave is about 4x4m. And every workout i have Daikin airco set on 18degrees and i also have Dehumidifier set on 50% to keep humidity below 60%. My room has sliding doors but i keep them closed when it's cold outside. 1 thing though is CO2 level, after 30-60mn CO2 level is 5000+ppm and I haven't found any information on the web regards negative impact on performance, but i assume it does have a negative impact. Just like they recommend to keep co2 level below 1200 in office spaces. I then open the sliding door a bit to keep the co2 level within control. You have any tips/experience on air quality in your pain cave? Chrs and thanks for great videos.
CO2 levels isn’t something I’ve looked into. It’s on the cards.
great informative video.
I'm getting my cave set up now and appreciate this video was a few years back, do you still recommend the SunAir fans or is there something better?
Vornado branded ones work well (and are in stock most places). I’m still using the Kickr Headwind that was released a few years back. Some people are using other more industrial air movers which I need to look into.
@@gplama Thanks, will take a look.
Which shops can I find these fans? I can't seem to find them locally unless they're online - I checked JB, Harveynorman, GoodGuys, Bunnings, none of them lists this product.
I can't find them in Aus either. Discontinued :(
@@sagerhead Vornado looks similar, but costs loads more... Have you worked out an alternative yet?
@@Inserico I found a Heller high velocity fan in available Aus.
coors light. make sure the mountains are blue though or it won't work.
hahah!
Would an open window right next to the trainer work aswell? For colder climates I mean.
Air movement is almost more important than temperature. If the open window means lots of moving air, yes. If not, you'll still overheat.
Hey! I see you have both a Neo and Kickr. Wich one do you prefer? Really want one of them but can't decide wich one
Add the Drivo to the list to consider. They're the current top three at the high end of the smart trainer market. If you can test ride them, I'd highly recommend that before purchase.
One thing is to consider is the air you breathe. Keep it circulated.
Do you happen to know what the airflow rating of the Sunair 30cm fan is?
I'm having a lot of difficulty knowing what to buy. Locally, I can get various Vornado fans, however they are quite expensive (double) the price of overseas. Their airflow rating is also quite low (the 660 is around 1000m3/h) -- in short, they don't seem very good value. TrainerRoad blog mentioned the Lasko 3300, which appears to go to sveral thousand m3/h. They're only around $35-40 USD, but I can't find them locally and postage is too high.
Everything else advertised locally lacks any kind of airflow rating, so I'm inclined to just order a Sunair and wait it out - I was just curious as to what the airflow rating was.
I have no idea sorry. If it's not on their site/specs then I'll assume they don't publish that information on these units.
Great -- thanks again for the response! I'll probably give one of these fans a go anyway.
I ended up getting one of these -- not a bad fan for the price. FYI for anyone wondering, the instruction manual (model PFS30) shows these are a 60w fan.
I think I could probably go something slightly noisier and higher power, given the noise from my Kickr + drivetrain.
3rd lol, Ill have to pick up one of those small fans :). Great video mate
Hi Shane, what tripods are you using for the tv’s?
Allcam TR940. Wall mount if you can. It's a 100% better way to go.
Any update on fans in Aus? These ones no longer available. Struggling to find something comparable for under $250. Ouch!
Little Vornado ones from Amazon AU are good.... but expensive.
@@gplama roger that, I’ll take a look. Cheers Shane, and greetings from Hobart - on a stinking 28 degree day. 😂
One thing I found out is that having to many fans in a room can greatly reduce your ANT + if they are too close to your fob.
This OZZY gets a STIFFY
over a fan.....
Shane, where in Melbourne can i find these? so needed ATM for indoor training
Bunnings. Maybe. Look for ‘turbo velocity’
would you recommend one or two of these fans for a single person?
Two. One will do.... but more is better. :)
What and where can I get them stands that the monitor/tv is mounted on. Thanks
Those TV stands are covered in my blog post "Winter is Coming". Here's the link: gplama.blogspot.com.au/2016/05/winter-is-coming-upgrade-your-bike-cave.html
Thanks 😀👍
have been looking at these fans, also been looking at some tower fans, have you used a tower fan? thanks
Just curious, how come you do so much indoor cycling living in Straya and all...
Legacy thing from when I started competing. Indoors is the best place for specific targeted training right in the zone.... specifically for time trials. And snakes. There's snakes everywhere! :)
Also the winters can be pretty bitter too.
Whoo easy there on the story telling Mr Lama. I live here too. haha
Thanks for the reply though, I knew there was more to it! Cheers
Then don't tell anyone about the crocs in the Yarra! hahah!
I don’t need cooling because I’m well hard son! ;)
Where do I get those tripods under the screens?
Allcam tripods: ua-cam.com/video/cUrF41XgFuw/v-deo.html
looks like they sold out of SunAir 30cm High Velocity Fan
Oh, thats how you became bald. The big fan blew your hair off. ;)
By the way, using a standing fan with 3 speeds. Unfortunatly not with remote control. Standing in front and a little to the side of me, but close enough so I can reach it and adjust the speed as i go harder or slower on the trainer.
I trained for first time with cooling fan. I set it right behind laptop screen - 60 cm in front of the bike. I trained for 2,5 hours. Now i feel some discomfort in a throat, it feels like you get cold and sick after. You have some tips have to avoid that? i used fan at lowest speed and only after the first sweat came out.
virus sore throats are caused by a virus not getting fan blowing on you unless someone with a virus infection coughs or sneezes behind the fan
Alex Lucashewich I had the same... did you find a solution? I later on, 2 days after, had fever ... I try again and again I suffer problems like to get hill... never had a problem outside, not even at -5 descends... how can it be?... I wish you find a solution
I was squinting all the way through this, hoping the rectal thermometer part wasn't going to suddenly pop up!!!
I didn't want to strain my gauge....... ;)
Been scrapping Shano?
First rule.
40 degrees? What the hell are you doing on the turbo then?! LOL
i saw that fan for 400 euros.. its like 600australian.
Amazon Echo and Wemo switch for turning fan on/off Easy to use and you can pretend to be Tony Stark!
I have my fan behind me blowing onto my back - just a cheepo pedestal. HN have one with remote that I might have a look at.
www.harveynorman.com.au/heating-cooling-air-treatment/fans/goldair-40cm-pedestal-floor-fan-with-remote.html
We all love a tail wind! I wonder if there's any psychological benefits of having the wind at your back..... there's an experiment to try! :)
Heaps faster :) .. I just don't like the constant blowing from the front. Also have a ceiling fan mixing things up... and being outside in the pergola, get a bit of natural wind every now and again.. still seem to be able to sweat buckets tho!
Training voor echelons (waaiers)! ;)
He's been using the 75mm standing fan too much.

We're both bald dudes on UA-cam chat... are we really in a position to comment on fashion?
fair enough :) haha I just realized this vid is from 2016 so I should formally apologize I'm sure your fashion has improved :D :D
Love your vids btw
I use cold beer and a couch and let my wife do the hard work on the trainer.
Indoor cycling in Australia. What????? Buahahahahahah.
Other things likely didn’t know, it snows here. This video is also for a global audience… so there’s that too.
