I used one of these in the '70s in my role as a bank employee & travelled the length & breadth of the UK in it so over 2 years knocking up a quite high mileage. The car NEVER let me down come hail, snow, rain or high temperatures
My dad had a 1972 consul 2500 v6 from new. In damp misty humid weather if left outdoors, it wouldn't start in the morning. It ran well and was a pleasure to drive, it had an automatic choke which reved the engine up to 1200 rpm when cold, had great brakes, the gear lever came off in my dads hand, low 20s mpg. A head gasket went at 80 odd thousand. The engine was rebuilt. My sister ran it low on oil and it siezed and was scrapped. It was a replacement for a 1970 corsair 2000, the corsair was faster and we all prefered it and regretted the change. They were both manual.
My father used to have a 2.0 Litre Ford Consul and then later on he bought a 2 Litre White Ford Granada Estate which i used for work,i think that was one of the best work horses i've ever had, just a simple 2 Litre engine no computer no catalytic convertor no sensors apart from the usual temp and oil on the engine and it only ever broke down once because of a faulty condensor, what a brilliant car and i do miss it 👍
What was “special” about these series of cars is that they were well built, mechanically reliable and depreciated very heavily. Hence in the late 70s and early 80s you could pick a 4 year old example for 30% of its list price and still have the bulk of its use ahead of you. My Dad ran several of these as private taxis and they hit the nail bang on the head. Luxury without the apparent ostentatious criticism that German stuff attracted at that time
The amalgamation of Ford Britain and Ford Germany began with the 1965 Transit, 1967 Mark 1 Escort, then the 1969 Capri. The TC Taunus Cortina was fourth. The Consul - Granada was an excellent car and seriously challenged the 6 cylinder BMW's and W114/5 Mercs. The ride was 9 tenths as good as the XJ6. Ford made the same basic car until 1985 and it was still good then.
Very happy memories of hiring a 3.0 litre GXL for a week, from Godfrey Davis Car Hire in Sheffield. Covered a ridiculous number of miles and fell in love with the car. Superb styling.
Great video, great car. Sorry to nitpick but I think the leather was vinyl and the wood came from the Formica tree. No matter, the Granada was a wonderful piece of design, both Mk1 and Mk2.
I had a 1976 3.0 GL in 1979, run it for 4 years and drove it all over the country. It was comfortable, reliable and had a massive back seat if you know what I mean!
Loved them. My dad bought a diamond white 2.5 in 1973. Ruby red velour interior, black vinyl roof. Great for swallowing up the whole family . Unfortunately there were automatic choke issues, it drank petrol around town, and ultimately rusted badly. I can still remember the distinctive smell of the Ziebart underseal that was applied from new. Happy days.
An excellent video thanks. I've always loved Ford's they knew what we wanted and gave it to us from Fast Fords to the Granada Cosworrth (not the frog eye). Don't forget how generous they were to film companies very clever marketing courtesy of The Sweeny and many more. But they've lost it in my opinion with the discontinuation of the Fiesta Focus and now Mondeo. I do hope history proves them wrong.
I 1977/8 I persuaded my boss to skip buying a Japanese car, a Mitsubishi Colt Sapporo. To buy a 3litre White Ford Granada with Brown vinyl roof and Brown velour interior. He loved it.
Careful … you can’t be comparing with a Buick or Cadillac- those are General Motors! More appropriately… a Lincoln or Mercury - indeed the USA had its own Ford Granada- same name, very different car. Lovely video - many thanks 🙏
Being a Ford person & starting my apprenticeship with Fords in the early 80’s I didn’t know the story behind the name of Granada, until you explained…. Once owned a MK1 3:0 GL & a 2:0 ‘87 auto Hatchback MK whatever ??
Have a look at Star Maidens. a 70s sci fi show. Gareth Thomas, who went onto be Blake of Blakes 7, he was chased about by coppers in a Granada or consul.
I as a car mad kid in the 70,s wanted my dad to get one.He had a mk1 Escort in brown which he cherished but the Mk1 Granny was the "Boss". My first car was a mk4 cortina and Ford back then just nailed design better than Jag or BMW etc.
@GlennPowell-Is3lg I was just thinking the best competition for the Jags in the 80's banger racing, even today both cars are still used, check out the 2023 world finals at Ipswich for some beautiful examples.
@@Phuc_Yhou The bangers in the unlimited class ( 3 litre plus) were all Granada,s and Jags.I had a work mate that raced Jags. God knows how many cars were killed back then.Mk 2 granadas are still being raced???? As for engines its the V6 essex or cologne versus the jag xk6 lump.To be fair in my humble opinion you couldnt put a hairs breadth between either with a good carb/s and camshaft/s. I would go for the Ford though still.Cracking engines that also bolted into Volvo 740,s .
A Granada an executive luxury car?? That's hilarious. Ford made practically the same thing here in Australia, branding it as the Falcon XA/XB/XC. Same styling. The Australian production featured optional 2 big inline six engines and 2 big V8's and a much better dash design. The presenter says it was an executive's alternative to the Mercedes - he's hallucinating. Chalk and cheese. The Granada/Falcon was just a cheap car stamped out for the masses at adequate but not excellent quality. The contemporary Mercedes was the W114/W115 - a car selling for more than double the price, and multiples more reliability, durability, and refinement. If an Australian company had offered its executives a common-as-muck Granada/Falcon, they would have quit in disgust.
Unfortunately there seems to be only one of these left as all you car reviewers use the same car! (This one perhaps rare as it has an engine option not officially available on the GXl)
a 70's ford granada. really? haha. i never expected to see anyone on a youtube car channel do a review on a 70's ford granada. amazing. like watching a sport-fishing fanantics channel where they're trolling for carp or guppies. what the hell? :)
I cannot warm to the style of this car. It's just one of those things. No offence 🙂. I much prefer the elegance of Jaguars, Rovers and cars that really are British,
Shut it, you're nicked!
Get your strides on, son, we're the Sweeney and we haven't had any dinner..
Guv, guv, guv, GUV! (For the last time of trying……..)
My favourite big saloon of the 1970s. The Granada is absolutely fabulous.

Saloons will make a big comeback one day.
I really, really hope so. "Cars" have never been so bad as they are now.
I've always preferred Saloons, I cannot understand how people think SUV's are more appealing, most modern stuff leaves me cold.

Couldn't put it better ourselves!

Godfrey Davis car hire.
My goodness me, that's pre Thatcher 😂😂
The Essex 3.0 V6 is one of the best sounding engines ever.
M54 3.0 has entered the chat
Definitely a great sound
BMWs , yawn @@richlee509

If I won the lottery, a Mk1 and Mk2 Granada would be very near the top of my shopping list!
Good choice!
Are they that expensive? 🙃

Had a K reg 3.0 GXL......NO problems, silver grey, red interior 😁😁😁!

That car was way ahead of its time.
Ive owned a Black 3.0S and a later 3.0 Ghia in white which ended up 3.9 V8
I mini cabed granada all the time great cars wish they would build them again
NHK295M Consul GT. Legend.
MK1 and 2 had both brilliant cars
Had a 1979 Grandad mk2 on loan from the company pool in 1981, pale green, it felt the size of an aircraft carrier.
I 1977/8 I persuaded my boss to skip buying a Japanese car, a Mitsubishi Colt Sapporo. To buy a 3litre White Ford Granada with Brown vinyl roof and Brown velour interior. He loved it.
Just my opinion, but this must be the nicest Granada model ever. I would love one today, but no more room in my garage!
Back to The Factory, Bill. Don't spare the horses - and get your trousers on. 😋
I had a mk1 3.0v6, what a marvellous car, smooth, quiet, comfortable. Wish l still had it. Like driving an armchair.
Executive luxury indeed 🫶
The Dutch Royal family used several of those in dark blue as state limousine 💪
First and second generations actually.
gramps mobile. Interesting a sunroof but no power windows or mirrors.
Careful … you can’t be comparing with a Buick or Cadillac- those are General Motors! More appropriately… a Lincoln or Mercury - indeed the USA had its own Ford Granada- same name, very different car. Lovely video - many thanks 🙏
It certainly wasn't leather seating on the vast majority of granada models

You needed to drive through some empty cardboard boxes.
Sadly The Sweeney used them all!
What was the list price on this back in the day?
Consul GT was the rarest of them
Has the front wing passenger side been changed? 🤔
I had 2,0 pinto engine type no hassle

Mark 1 was the best ever
The Consul and Granada were produce side by side, not as your suugest.
It would be better if the great British car journey let you go out on the road instead of driving around in circles on a trading estate,
When was it sunny????? 🤔
This was filmed back in the summer ;)
@ClassicsWorldUK that's what's surprising considering the amount of actual rainy days we had 😂
Junk. Hi from australia
They sold enough of them so they couldn't have been that bad
I cannot warm to the style of this car. It's just one of those things. No offence 🙂.
I much prefer the elegance of Jaguars, Rovers and cars that really are British,
Although, today, a Jaguar is Indian and a Rover would be Chinese, even Lotus, Morgan, Aston-Martin, Rolls-Royce, and Bentley are foreign.
Lovely Car. My Dad had a MK2 2.3GL, real cars. The fake green agenda is destroying motoring.
Ford lost the plot years ago.
